So as you can see from my intro thread, I am completely new to the WH40k mini universe.

This is my very first mini, a Sister of Battle, "Sister Superior".. straight out of the box.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/Jammy_Dodger/IMG_2175.jpg

Looking forward to starting on her, I have a tiny bit of experience painting miniatures from my D&D days but that was like 15 years ago =\

I also went ahead and bought the Rulebook, as I don't know a soul who plays and can teach me, or to even play with.... but right now I dont care... i am perfectly happy to learn as I go along, enjoy the process and hopefully make some friends and learn from you all here! smile.png

The book itself is quite overwhelming for someone who isnt familiar with the game... but hopefully it will come to me along the journey. smile.png

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!! Anything from painting tips, how to build my army.... or even how to find people to play with =\

Anyways, I will update again as she is being painted. biggrin.png

Welcome to B+C! smile.png

If you haven't already, visit the Sisters subforum, as there are quite a few experienced players and painters there happy.png I'd love a Sisters army (I have a Celestine and a Canoness and that's it laugh.png ), but I'm praying for them to eventually be released in plastic sad.png

Are you going for an official Order, or creating one of your own? smile.png

See this is one of my many questions..... how to choose and order, and even where to find them.... nevermind creating one of my own biggrin.png

Here is a link that should answer a fair few questions regarding the Sisters' Orders:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Adepta_Sororitas#.UjphJz8XflI

If you decided you want to create your own Order (like I have), then the B+C site has a Painter program to create your own colour scheme, which is here:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sisterp.php

Quite easy to use. Select an area of the Sister to "paint" in the list by clicking on the colour square and then choose a colour smile.png You can save the picture as a.jpg (usually by right clicking the image and then selecting "save".

As I said earlier, perhaps a look at the Sisters subforum will give you some help and inspiration too:

Hope that helps! happy.png

Thank you so much, I did just find and bookmark that Lexicanum.... but its a lot to take in. i am sure I will be lurking in the SoB forums for a while before posting anything cause I dont even know were to start with my questions! lol

I will also take some time to go through the links youve shared....

So choosing an order effects the color pallets you can use for your minis? I was hoping to go with black armor, red accents......

Orders that GW have created, such as the Order of the Valorous Heart have a specific colour scheme, the same way that official Space Marine Chapters do (such as Blood Angels etc), but if you wanted to create your own Order, you could have any colour(s) you can think of smile.png Even if you wanted to do an official Order, you're not obliged to use that colour scheme, it just makes it easier to identify the Order in question.

tl:dr - Choose whatever colours you like smile.png

Hi again, Maeve! Welcome to the WIP forum. :)

You can paint your minis however you want. It's a hobby and it shouldn't be stressing you, worrying that the paint scheme you want to do doesn't fit with something already out there. You happen to be in luck though, since the Order of Our Martyred Lady is one of the more popular ones, kind of the poster girls for the SoBs, and fits your idea.

And a nice art piece:

wlecome to the B&C, sister! yes the sisters are an underrated army. but they are a great army that is really effective when used well, I have seen Space Wolves tabled by them 4 times in a tourney! relax, have fun, and learn by doing. we love helping new blood and we all look forward to your progress.

For the Emperor,

prime.

Getting some background is always nice because it can help build an image in your head of what you want to do with your figures, or at least it does for me.

Now, not to scare you off of your choice, but black can be one of the more intimidating colors to paint, depending on how you want it to look.

There's a guy on youtube that does marine painting video tutorials(none for sisters that I could find, sorry), but here's his about Black Templars which can help you with the black part of the scheme.

I don't know how experienced you are with painting, but I'd say his method is somewhat advanced because of the hard line highlighting required.

Les burton's Awesome Paint job is good. but he relies heavily on airbrushes, Oil washes, and other Advanced techniques. A good place to Start would be the Black Templars(we don't Bite.....much) or the Iron Hands or Raven Guard forums. you'll get mor "real world" advice. i will be doing My black Templars soon, and although they are almost all Iron, the black robes and such might interest you.

Firstly: welcome! Not just to B&C (although, obviously, you are here), but more to the wargaming hobby as a whole!

It really is a great time to be new, and whatever anyone's preference for model aesthetics, game themes, game and model scales, or even rules, there is a game out there to cater for you.

Being B&C, we only discuss Games Workshop's Warhamemr 40,000 game here, and most specifically those factions that are either Imperial or ex-Imperial (and most especially those armies that are Space Marines of some sort or another); there are other forums which cater to other specific factions or which are more diverse, so if you are curious do have a look around the 'net for them!

There are also lots of other great games out there, but these again fall outside the scope of this forum. This is fine and great, but do feel free to have a poke around the 'net! As I say, it's a great time to be a new gamer as you really are spoilt for choice.

Moving on...

I personally have always liked the Order of Our Martyred Lady (which has been the "default" GW studio scheme for ages - even getting a slight revision last time the Sisters got their Codex). Their scheme, and others can be found here.

As others have said though, you are not bound to paint the models any particular way. You can choose whatever colours and schemes you like, and these will not have any effect in terms of forcing you to play a specific way. For example, I have seen great schemes in purples and ivory, blue and white, green and yellow, and even in metallic colours. The main thing is to pick a scheme that you like, and that you have fun painting your figures. Everything else after that is less relevant really.

If you are new to painting, it can be a bit overwhelming working out where to start. Fortunately, there is a lot more help out there thanks to the 'net than when I started. Most important is to find techniques and painting tutorials that you like the results of, and which you think you can achieve. Don't be limited to those that are model-specific either; if for example you like the black armour on a different model, feel free to copy the style on your model. Personally, I always liked Tale Of Painters' tutorial for black armour here, but there is another good tutorial by the same chap here as well.

A good place to start with is Doctor Fausts' Painting Clinic, which covers a huge array of topics and techniques from how to assemble and base your models, to painting them in various ways, and even how to strip the paint off when things go wrong (or you want a change...). His videos are clear, fairly concise, and aimed more at the beginner-intermediate level on the whole (although he does cover some more advanced stuff too).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask as I'm certain we can help you. :)

My advice on black is not to start with black , but with a very dark blue or a very dark grey and use a lot of black or smoke washes.

I keep meaning to try that. Might be a lot easier to start with happy.png

I used to do that actually. I would use Carchardon granite(gahd I miss that color, Skavenblight dinge is close but not the same) give it the old top-down light grey hightlight, and the wash with badab black till i liked it.

i did forget. if you want a super easy black recipe. search for captain sempers consectrator's. he hilites his black with a turquoise color.....it looks good.

I did a similar thing with my AoV test figure. I'd paint a thick highlight stripe and then wash over it a few times it until darkened to where I wanted it, then come back in and paint a thinner highlight on top of it.

It's not too hard for me to do, but I've tried to show some people new to painting how to do it and they had a very difficult time with it.

First, Kage THANK YOU AGAIN!! Those vids are perfect! Bookmarked for sure.

And to those worried about some painting tecniques being too advanced.... don't worry, I went to Art School (lol why does it sound hilarious and kind of sad saying that?)... and do a lot of illustration work professionally msn-wink.gif I've also dabbled in sculpting and did once upon a time paint D&D minis. biggrin.png

Linky to some of my work and sculpts.....

My Gwyllion is an example of my sculpting and painting.... bigger than a mini, I know... but i am excited for the challenge to paint small scale! biggrin.png

  • 3 weeks later...

ok thanks to all of your guys awesome advice and links to tutes etc... I finally got around to painting my sister last night! biggrin.png

Also went to my first WH40k game last night that I actually got to play (I usually just watch whenever I see them happening) The dude I was playing against let me use his Space Marines which he said play similar to Sisters. Had a ton of fun.... hope to do it again next week.

Still dont know how to build my army though.... especially since now the new Sisters Codex is in a format only viewable in current smart devices. I have an ancient 3G iphone and no ipad. sad.png sucks to be me.

Anyways.... here is my Sister Superior! biggrin.pnghttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/Jammy_Dodger/IMG_4882.jpg

I know there is lots of room for improvement, but I was literally only working with 5 colors >_>
