Emperor's Furor
Does anyone else have this problem, I keep going around and around on what legion I should go with, nothing is screaming at me, I have a lot of ideas, some good some bad, but they never stick. So I'm pretty much giving up, I've resigned myself to the fact that my choice will eventually be made clear and until then I'm not going to dwell on it. Ordo Machinum
I ran into the same problem. Did I want to build a legion from Istvaan? Or one from the final battle on Terra? I love Dark Angels, but they're not at the forefront of many of the great legendary battles of the Heresy. So, as I begin to build my DA Legion, I'm also beginning a Mechanicum force. They were just about everywhere! An added bonus is that when I use them for my 40K Codex: Space Marine force, they will be adaptable for any wartraits I want to use. FunkyMonkey
Can't go wrong with Sons of Horus. I hope Iron Warriors will prove to be a good option as well in Book 3 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3467505 Share on other sites
Bama
I'm in the same boat. I just can't choose. I was leaning towards the Night Lords because of Sevatar. I really like all the background on him as well as the way that A-D-B writes him. Then I read Vulkan Lives and I really disliked Curze by the end of the book. He came across as a petulant goth child. No other legion is callimg my name. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3467557 Share on other sites
Kol Saresk
Bama, re-read The First Heretic, Savage Weapons and Prince of Crows. Then (re)read the three 40K Night Lords novels. Then (re)read Lor of the Night by Simon Spurrier. Wait until Massacre comes out. Read it. Proscribe the same treatment to the OP. Usually if you can't stick with a Legion in its best light, then it may not be the Legion for you. Of course, just because you can next to it in the light, it doesn't mean you'll still be there when the light turns to shadow. Bama
Other than Curze, I really like all of the background on the Night Lords. According to the IA articles the Night Lords possess one of the most stable gene seeds. The A-D-B Night Lord trilogy was awesome. I love how there are some Night Lords that want to find a purpose other than just killing. I've read all of the Night Lord fiction that I can get my hands on. Prince of Crows was awesome. Sevatar comes across as someone who won't hesistate to remove any obstacles in his path to get what he wants. He has no love for Horus or the Emperor. In my opinion he looks at Curze as his alcoholic father that he has to take care of when he falls off the wagon. I have seen the spoiler page from the new book with Sevatars stats. He seems pretty good. I hope that his fate is eventually revealed. No other legion is callimg my name. Disregard that awful freaking novel, Kyme beat the wonderful history and personality of the VIII Legion and turned them into cartoon bad guys and ne'er do wells. Freaking abomination that novel was. Read Prince of Crows and be reminded of why the VIII, and Sev in particluar, is glorious. Scribe
Really? I found that while it offered a very different view of Curze, we havent really seen that much so far. A bit of self loathing would actually serve to increase the 'feels' I have for Night Haunter...and did. EDIT: As for the topic? Read a lot. Read as much BL fiction as possible, and run with that. If you get into the feel of each legion, and can find something that hooks you, all the better. Sviar
Have you read any BL stuff lately? has anything inspired you? +1 I found the Raven Guard fluff to be exately was I was looking for, and that was Before the HH novels and most RG books. After the release the HH novels and RG books began to come out, it reinforced what I always known, that I had choosen the right Chapter. If a certain Chapter inspires you, you'll have no/less trouble to keep painting. Take it from me, in the begining I used to paint up different Chapters started one and lost the motivation, started another one and lost the motivation. At that time I halted every project and sat down and read the fluff of every Chapter on 40K Lexicanum. When I came to the XIX legion I know I had found what I was looking for. And I still get motivation and inspired when I read a RG book, and I get really annoyed when someone bash Corax. Good luck, I hope you find a Chapter that inspire and motivates you. Flint13
I'm afraid it was 100% different for me, OP. As soon as I started getting a few small squads of legionnaires (as paychecks allowed, of course) I knew they'd be painted in midnight clad. I've been gaming with the Nightlords since the first year of 3rd edition, so when moving on to an HH style army, the choice wasn't really even a choice, just a natural progression ^_^ What I would recommend, that has worked for several friends is to start assembling your army. Make a few kick-ass conversions, and eventually, you'll think of what legion they need to be. I have found a good army with a lot of personal investment builds a story and background for its self. Grotsmasha
I'd recommend choosing 2-3 Legions and fitting them out with specific roles in your army. For example, you may SoH for your mainstay, Tacticals and Veterans, then IW or WE for your Assault/Breacher Units and then maybe WS/RG for Mounted/Recon units. Maybe create two or three multi-legion setups, then roll for it. This way you'll have multiple colour schemes to paint, limiting boredom. Cheers, Jono Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3467714 Share on other sites
Greyall
Brother just pick a legion out of a hat it worked for me Does that mean you're not a son of Angron at heart? Brother I am disappoint Just kidding, I run into the same problem, though it doesn't really compare to WoT's since I just stick to books, so there's no investment attached. My strategy was to choose a Legion or two that match my character or main personality traits. Hence, Blood Angels or Salamanders. grand_master85
Ahh, my own problem is I keep starting a Legion, getting far with it, then reading something else from BL and I just go 'oh, that's awesome!' and then stripping my minis and doing something else. Sadly this has left me with a pile of wasted minis that have been destroyed by said process. That said, I think the waiting game may be best. Devour every bit of HH fluff you can from BL, there may be a Legion that screams out to you. Personally, I read the books, and then re-read them. Re-reading for the 3rd time, I was on Fulgrim and just had a feeling about the Emperor's Children. I've actually managed to stick with my Legion choice now, and I'm very pleased with it :-)Shame, then, that I'm back at square one with my allies for them who will eventually be Legion Two. Cue endless debates in my head between picking Word Bearers (grey), Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Salamanders or Death Guard.....sigh. FunkyMonkey
I've always been a traitor at heart due to my dislike of the Emperor's way of handling things in general. That's why as soon as I get some more funding, I'm going to do one of my favorite three traitor legions: Word Bearers, Sons of Horus, and Iron Warriors. I like Iron Warriors because construction hazard stripes are awesome and I like their armored and siege theme, but I want to learn more about their rules in Book 3 before I devote an army to them. HH is expensive. I like Sons of Horus and Word Bearers because those two are the real core of the traitor movement. Similar to the Iron Warriors, I want to get a better look at the Word Bearers before I choose. So far, Sons of Horus is really appealing to me because of their gang brutality theme...plus topknots. Emperor's Furor
I've read every book available, including the novellas, I may of missed some of the audio dramas and I've not got around to Mark of Calth yet but I've read as much as I can. I can see a lot of positives to the legions but then I weigh them against the negatives, which also include could I paint them any good, are they popular and thus not very unique etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3467895 Share on other sites
Brother Keyaetus
The Legion I could see fitting my playstyle most would be Death Guard, but funding would never support it, the same way in which I'd love a white scar army more than any other type...but I'd prefer to see different marks of Jetbikes also, like mk2. Alas I've gone with the somewhat more affordable Mechanicum/Iron hand allys route.....and damn do those 9 man thallax squads with rending hurt.. Knight of the Raven
Another way is to choose another faction where only one subfaction inspires you. It worked for me. Okay, the lack of plastic models sort of throws a wrench in my army of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, but still. grand_master85
I think by the sounds of it, it'll be one of those things that one day you'll have a euraka moment. The good thing though is that you can have an allied detachment too (1 Hq, 1 Elite, 2 Troops, 1 Fast Attack and 1 Heavy Support). This is great as it means I am able to do my Emperor's Children, but if something else takes my fancy, I can do a small contingent of them Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3468006 Share on other sites
facmanpob
I have succumbed to the lure of 30K, although I haven't actually bought anything yet (currently sticking to my 2013 painting plan of finishing my 40K DA successors (73% done, 71.5% of the year gone..... ). I have been allowing different ideas to slush around in the bathtub of my mind.... so far I've toyed with Word Bearers, World Eaters, Alpha Legion, KSons, 1st Legion, Scars, Salamanders and Ultramarines (4 loyal and 4 traitor, so nicely symmetrical). Depending on mood, cycle of the moon, weather and proximity to the warp, I change my mind regularly. I also get different ideas every time I read a HH novel or short story. The other 10 Legions I've discounted, not because I don't like them, but because I can't get excited about modelling them (which is a shame because I really like Perturabo's character, and enjoy Abnett's Space Wolves characterisation for example). Ultimately though, rather than force myself to choose, I am allowing the choice to come to me (rather like the wand choosing the wizard, if I can steal from the wisdom of Mr Ollivander for a moment ). As such, I have already discounted the Word Bearers and KSons (too much red to paint), and World Eaters (not sure I like the white and blue), and my choice is down to 5 and falling. Give it time, and the choice will become clear Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3468083 Share on other sites
grand_master85
Aye, I decided I really like the Word Bearers, but more when they were unsure and finidng themselves. plus, I don't get on very well with red, so I'm doing Grey Word Bearers, Crusade-era style :-D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280526-tired-of-forcing-myself-to-choose/#findComment-3468117 Share on other sites
