The Penance Crusade (Motivational)

Actually, what we might consider doing is rather than pick a specific item in the FOC, pick a slot. That way people can fill in what they either need or want to model for their crusades.

Also, it seems like we ought to consider coming up with a Crusade badge. It might be kind of cool to add it to those units that were created.

@Prime: My crusade is known as the Albigensian Crusade. I adopted it from a community effort that was initiated by M2C, that we actually need to revive at some point.

So first challenge could be changed to #1a Emperor's champion if you're joining templars #1b some other hq unit. Challenge 2: an Elite slot, Challenge 3 troops, etc?

Wow, I was just thinking this today. I agree, it would make for a nice touch.

I'm still trying to come up with a :cuss crusade name, but nothing seems to click in my mind.  I want a more medieval russian/ roman orthodox flair for my army. Any ideas brothers? Seriously, the only historic battle that comes to mind is the battle of the ice...and thats when the russians beat the knights teutonic.  <_<

The Crimean Crusade? The Dardanelles Crusade? Not really medieval, but they sound cool, and you could quite easily make some thinly veiled references to seizing imperative shipping lanes for the Imperium biggrin.png

Dear Emperor, that actually works though- there was a military operation called the Dardanelles Campaign- an allied Britain/Russia venture against, Turkey<?> if I'm not mistaken, near the caucus front. A pivotal part of that operation was safeguarding naval vessels and supply ships through the Dardanelles, against bombardment and other forms of incoming hostility....port that into 40k, chapter takes over the shipping and staging of supply lines for a massed crusade front in a particularly harsh environs... yes, yes... Oh firepower, now you've got the gears turning in the ol' noggin!

FP- if you don't mind changing my penitent strike force to "Dardanelles Crusade" I'd be much obliged.

Was thinking about the campaign badge for this penitent crusade, as well as a slogan in case we wanted to add it to scroll work or something.

Should we go with established templar colors: red, black, white. or should this be a starker contrast? blues, golds, greys, etc.

I also thought of a potential latin phrase (and please feel free to propose alternatives, just wanted to get Honda's ball rolling)

(In) hoc signo pretium invenies- "Under this banner we will find redemption"

An homage/tribute to the famous In hoc signo vinces "under this sign you shall conquer" of anitquity, modified for our purpose of penitent crusading.

I really ought to try and go to bed. Bad case of insomnia this week.

I like the crusade phrase, though <apologies to Roy Scheider> "We're going to need a bigger banner".

Could you also post the latin word for "redemption"? That way we can fit it on smaller scrollwork or shoulder pads, etc.

Regarding badges, I say go for it, let your imagination guide you, come up with a couple and then we can choose from there. I would offer that complex designs are a real pain in the neck when you have to apply them to small areas, so do keep that in mind as you let your muse go to work. As an example, I put campaign badges on my initiates (and probably need to add some to my SB) to give a representation of experience.

For example, I went through a badge exercise for my crusade, got feedback from the brethren, and was even happy with the design (for the most part). It is a pain to paint (red hour glass on white background) and although I give it the good ol' Templar try, I'm rarely happy with the result. It just doesn't simplify well.

Looking forward to what you come up with.

Cheers,

I'd be game for a crusade badge... just not too complicated... I'm not confident in being able to freehand anything complex to my satisfaction...

Yeah there was a Dardanelles campaign... Allied expeditionary forces against the Turks and Central Powers in WW1... a bloody mess like most of those campaigns where... The battle of Gallipoli was one of the key actions in that campaign where the ANZAC landing force got mauled and pinned down by the Turks on the landing beaches for months.

I'm spending the evening with my fiance- but I will do my utmost to make a few potential crusade badges tomorrow afternoon/evening and post them here.

Expect WIP EC shots from me on Tuesday. (I would post monday, but I have a job interview and my nerves are always frazzled before those). ++Edit++ Or sometime this week, depending on how crazy things get.

Technically, I started my EC conversion before the new codex in anticipation of new BT rules.  Should I penalize myself and expand on the conversion/pledge another model/etc? I'm at your mercy brothers.

Here is where the model was as of March of this year, haven't touched him since.

Thank you very much FP.

++Edit++ Okay, images fixed. Sorry for double post in thread, hope it's worth possible mod censure++

Okay first 2 thoughts for the day in terms of crusade badge- these are just ideas, feel free to come up with other crusade badge ideas folks- it's encouraged!

A shield with Canton (square in the top right corner), with Tierced per Fess stripes.  Canton is done in chapter color of your army/has your army's chapter symbol in it.  The per fess stripes are in the main colors of allied sons of don- imperial fists, crimson fists, black templars, respectively.  This opens up a lot of cross subforum crusade opportunity, painting ease, and a personal touch- since you put your chapter symbol in the canton. (example here has my confessor's bone colored armor in the canot, next to a per fess black templar stripe)

The second idea is a lozengy based shield design.

Sped the ms paint work along, so forgive the half filled in blue "cheques".  This one would be harder to paint- but lozengy can be done in almost any size- and would prove a nice backdrop for homage to 2 chapters we have ties with but likely wont use: CF and IF (blue and yellow).  Using lozengy as the background, we can then put a black saltire (sideways cross) over the lozengy for templars:

The white "stud" shown here is victory in the ETL1, additional studs could symbolize the additional crusades won by this board. (ignorant people may make comparisons to the confederate flag; which is why a chevron may want to be used instead.

The first one would be easier to paint, but I keep getting drawn back to the third one. I think I'd leave the white dot out as that could get tricky and I think I like the idea of all black.

So, I'd vote for the third one, minus the white dot.

What the hell, throw my vote in for it too. Might as well make my eyes bleed and show just how penitent I am painting that haha.

I didn't get much done today on my Emperor's Champion- (was busy taking photos and errands), but I did manage to get him pinned to the beginnings of a scenic base.  Gonna spend the next little bit uploading model photos for today, before I go searching for some bits for him and settle in for the evening.

I'm good with that crusade badge. But I have some questions.

I rather instigating this crusade over in Prime's other thread.

I have yet to begin a Templar force.

And the vision I had for a DIY counts as Templar army are actually going to be painted....red.

Anyone have a problem with my "Crimson Crusaders" being part of this crusade?

Absolutely no difference. even the subforum says"Black Templars AND their crusading brethren!

and my Black Templars are not Black either!

@The_Chaplain-finishing that Chappy would be an excellent vow! so, who cares about the head start. remember, this is a relaxed gathering all about fun!

I was avoiding this thread until I read that there is no deadline, which makes Krikey very happy indeed. Is it permissible to vow a model on which most of the conversion work is already done? I've a Master of the Forge on a bike and still have several hours of conversion work to do, but if we need to start from zero, I've got plenty of other HQ pieces I could work on.

I might have to jump in, my knights are in need of some more zealous action given I only had one vow in the last ETL.

Chapter is simply Known as the Templar Order, and they have a small Invenio crusade with an attached Tech Marine as my character that needs some attention. I chose the crusade based off of the Latin word for Discover, as the entire purpose of the Crusade is to hunt down and recover some lost artifact of the chapter.

yes absolutely. this is about finishing things lying around or in some cases, starting(yeah, I'm looking at you, Demus!) as most of your ground work is done, you are in a great position. I look forward to seeing it!

great idea! I really like that welcome aboard. no rush, just get it done!

some notes now.

I really am digging the Diversity in this project. It'll be cool to see different colored Templars IMO.

I like that people are using this to complete former projects! keep that up!

I was thinking about the whole "allied forces" thing. Originally I was against it. but then I saw something in our glorious chapters fluff. it was an epiphany, I am allowing Allies, and I an doing allies my self. hopefully it'll be as cool as I thought!

and the crusade badge. it's cool. I like the third one as well, but maybe make the "lozenges" bigger. remember, this is going on a model 28mm tall. I like the fact that it's different colored than the normally red, white, and Black.

I had thought of that as well. It occurs to me that some of us waiting on optic implants <"I'm not looking at you, just move along">, might arrive there naturally. However, I'd ask The_Chaplain to give that some thought and see if that actually works.

This.
