Hunter or Stalker?

A good point, no matter how useful he may be the relative cost should give you pause. Might be worth a try for a laugh, you never know! laugh.png

After discovering that the Hunter's savant missiles actually have servitor brains in to guide them I've decided that it's definitely going to be my first choice AA tank. How could you not after learning this? tongue.png

The other thing to remember about Savant lock is it targets the rear armor with the subsequent rolls for the missiles. Most of the AV 12 flyers have armor 10 on the back meaning your odds of penning go up even higher. (Of course the storm raven is the exception here but hey)

The beauty of the Storm Raven is it's expensive and takes up a Heavy Slot, so it does put pressure on an army that uses one. So we can forgive, perhaps, the ludicrous rear armour 12!

Other flyers are just going to hate Hunters.

You forgot to mention the fact that it ignores the bonus from the Melta rule. I'd mention the Talon here as well but it's only armor 11, they could cough at it and probably glance it.

Glorious isn't it? biggrin.png

I think I'm pretty lucky in that my games haven't descended into the Battle of Britain so I'll never need both AA tanks to provide what I need. One would be fine if you didn't come up against valid targets but two would make me feel like I wasted opportunities. Though for the cost it's not a crippling investment at least.

For those taking two, what sort of lists are you commonly up against?

I also take both ATM with ADL QG. My list is tiggy with a lot of different shooting options. So I want to be flexible with Tiggy boosting according to my needs. Last night the Hunter proved very valuable vs Tau: he got penetrating hits vs hammerheads and they failed cover saves consistently. He also brought a squad of 3 Piranhas so I was happy I also had the stalker. It didn't need to take action because of so bad saving throws vs the QG.

I'm really curious how a stalker would fare vs venom spam with vector tracking and prescience. Sadly I also am the only DE player at my LGS.

The nice thing about the Stalker is that it is not bad against a lot of things; it's not limited to AA. The Hunter can also shoot skimmers though few of them have the armor to really need armorbane.  On the other hand, a skimmer doesn't fly off the table causing you to lose lock.  I'll be honest though, I don't play many flyers right now either.  My schedule won't let me play on 40K night at my LGS so mostly I'm playing with a couple friends.  One plays mostly the new dex IF drop pods.  The other tends to play GK, Sisters, or IG.  They might bring a flyer but none of us are inclined to spam anything.  Last game I got to play was against the drop pods and I ended up killing the 'Talon with a terminator assault after it went into skimmer mode.

I think one thing that is easy to forgot is that they're not just effective against flyers.

They are also a solid counter to FMCs and Skimmers. How many armies are there out there that don't include a flyer, FMC or skimmer? Not many really.

It may only savant lock on flyers actually.  I'll look that up when I get home.

He was desperate.  It was T5 and I had the Relic while he did not have many shots at me.  He had to try try to kill me.

I checked; you are correct.  It only locks on FMC and flyers.

I know, that's what I meant by valid targets. Unfortunately for me those armies are the ones I play most tongue.png For some reason my gaming circle just never really bothered that much with skimmers apart from myself so I'll only really encounter them against the Eldar. I'm still going to try out the Hunter though :)

I've built two lists so far, they're identical except one has a hunter the other a stalker. With my local gaming group, I haven't had a chance to run the hunter yet, but the stalker is worth it's weight in gold against daemon flying circus. It's also been pretty useful as light anti armor, twice now it's killed my friend's predator tanks, both.
