Tzen
Well, This is my last game for the summer, and again my opponent is Kingy, who after being beaten last week wanted a rematch. This time he brought along his Tyranids! The table: http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king1.jpg We played the same game as last week, just a standard kill points mission, both facing off against each other. No night fighting or anything. Army Lists: Word Bearers Daemon Prince Wings Black Mace Tzeentch Daemon Mastery level two psycher 10 Chaos Space Marines Champ Power fist 2x Plasma guns Veterans of the long war Icon of Vengenace 10 Chaos Space Marines Champ Power fist 2x Plasma guns Veterans of the long war Icon of Vengenace 3 Terminators Champion Veterans of the long war Chain fist 3 Combi Meltas 3 Obliteratos Mark of Nurgle Daemon Allies Great Unclean One Psychic mastery level two Exalted reward Greater reward 10 Plaguebearers Plague ridden with greater reward http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king2.jpg Tyranids! (This may be wrong as I don't have access to his list, but I will do my best!) Tervigon (His HQ) Toxin sacs 10 Termagants toxin sacs 10 Termagants toxin sacs Tervigon Toxin Sacs Tervigon Toxin Sacs 2 Tyranid Hive Guard 2 Mawlocs Tyrannofex http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king3.jpg A word about the armies I wanted to try something different with my Word Bearers, as it feels weird not having neither possessed marines or Daemons in my arm, and since I am yet to paint any possessed marines I went for my Great Unclean One and some Plague Bearers. Truth is, I don't really know what Plague bearers are for or good at. They were cheapish I suppose, but I took them for fluffy reasons. This is why only one of them is painted. I realized some time ago that they seem a bit pointless and don't want to sink the limited painting time I have on them! Not till I have finished uni anyway! :D I didn't know what army Kingy was going to take, but it was nice to see him brign his 'Nids. He normally has a painted army but the force is pretty new from what I can tell (newish), and a lot of hisforce was painted, but not that much of what he used on the table. Still it was a really great game, I really felt like I was playing against a "swarm" of nids. As opposed to being dicked by the doom of Malan'tai. Set Up I rolled highest so chose to set up first and go first! Word Bearers deployement http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king4.jpg (The pile of chaos marines on the left hand side of the chaos deployment is all in deep strike!) I set up two units of my Chaos Space Marines on either flank. I was hoping to try and split his forces so that I could focus on one half of his army. The rest of my army was held in deep strike/reserve. I wanted to land with my Prince and my Great Unclean one and wreck through his army usign the black mace and the Great Unclean ones Nova ability that forced units to take toughness tests or lose models. Right Flank: http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king5.jpg (Word Bearers bravely taking cover) Left Flank: http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king6.jpg Tyranid Deployment http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king7.jpg Kingy left his Mawlocs in reserve so as to burrow up through the ground to cause some havoc! Pre game stuff! My Daemon prince got the hatred special rule (which I forgot about completely) for his warlord trait. He also rolled the Psychic powers Life Leech and Breath of Chaos. The Great Unclean One got Iron Arm and Rancid Visitations (Nova power). For his rewards he got the special rules Rage, Rampage and +1 Wound and It will not die! Not bad! The Tyranid HQ got Endurance and another one of them got Psychic Shriek! The Tyranid HQ got the warlord Trait Coordinated assault (Which i think he also forgot). Chaos Turn one I did nothing. Literally did nothing. Tyranids Turn One Kingy Moved his nids Forward and rolled for his Tervigon's to spawn more Gaunts. And sweet jesus did they spawn. I knew the general idea behind these creatures, but I wasn't prepared for just how many would come screeching out of these massive meat sacks! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king8.jpg Other than spawning lots of gribblies, nothing happened for him either, as nothing was in range for him to shoot at! Chaos Turn two! Out of all of my chaos reserves, only my Daemon Prince arrived onto the table which was a little disappointing. Still, onward and upwards as they say, as the prince Flew onto the center of the table and remained in the sky. The Squad on the left flank moved towards the bastion for cover, and the squad on the right flank bravely took some steps away from the oncomign horde! The only real attempt at shooting this turn came from his psychic power, but Kingy reminded me that I was suffering from the shadow of the warp, and all of my psychic tests failed. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king9.jpg http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king10.jpg So nothing happened :/ Tyranids Turn Two The Tyranids second Turn began as the Daemon Prince continued to swoop over head, trying to fight off the hive mind in the sky. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king11.jpg As the Tervigons spewed forth even more annoying minions (with one of them emptying its entire payload no longer able to do more!), the Mawlcos burst from under the ground, both of them going too far from the mark and missing the Chaos Marines on the left flank completely (phew)! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king12.jpg On the right flank the Tervigons and the Tyrant Guard moved froward, with the smaller Termagants and Gaunts swarming around them. The Tyrannofex And the HQ Tervigon held back with the two units of Gaunts he began the game with. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king13.jpg The shooting phase saw the entire Tyranid swarm opening fire on the flying Daemon Prince, and despite the difficulty to hit him, the sheer volume of fire power managed to cause one wound. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king14.jpg With very little of the chaos force on the battlefield, there wasn't much left for Kingy to do! Chaos Turn Three! Again my reserves rolls were very poor, with only my Great Unclean One arriving, who managed to deep strike nicely next to my Daemon Prince. In the movement phase my Daemon Prince landed next to the Greater Daemon and the marines on the left and right flanks turned round ready to shoot the Mawlocs. Opening fire against the Mawlocs the marines managed to reduce one of the mawlocs to four wounds, and the other to five. Both Serpentine monster screaming as the bullets punctured their Chitin hides! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king17.jpg http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king18.jpg At the centre of the board, the Daemon prince again failed to cast any psychic powers due to the shadow in the warp, but the newly arrived Great Unclean One let loose his Rancid visitations power and all of the squads around him lost at least one warrior to his ability. The fat belching monster giggled as pestilence ran virulently through the ranks of the Tyranids. In the assault phase, the Daemon Prince Kor Ghlabron charged into a unit of gaunts in front of him, killing off four of the gribblies, which triggered off the black mace (or sword in his case) and again caused a massive amount of injuries. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king15.jpg By the end of my turn, the table looked something like this: http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king16.jpg I was pretty pleased with this, I had yet to wipe a squad out,but between the Daemon Prince and the Great Unclean one I had made a huge gap in the 'Nids front line! Tyranids Turn three! Kingy began his turn by burrowing the Mawlocs again, bringing them back into reserve. The gaunts in the middle of the table turned to focus on the Great Unclean One and the Daemon Prince, whilst the gaunts on the right flank raced towards my end of the table, already going for the the linebreaker point. Most of the shooting was focused on the Great Unclean one, with only one wound being taken from the gregarious blob as he chuckled the damage off and met their oncoming charge with a shrug of his shoulders. The Ensuing comabat once again saw the Daemon Prince and Great Unclean one burn through a monstrous amount of Gaunts, with the Daemon Prince and Greater Daemon both takign a wound a piece. One Gaunt unit got wiped out giving me First Blood! and a victory point. On the left flank the Tyrant Guard moved closer to the Space Marine squad Killing one of their number in a hail of organic mess. Victory Points so far! Chaos: 2 Tyranids: 0 Chaos Turn Four! My fourth turn began with my reserves showing up. The Terminator landed directly infront of the Hive Gaurd, pouring their combi meltas into them, reducing oneof them to one wound. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king20.jpg In the middle of the table, the Obliterators landed in cover, and blew a squad of gaunts off the faceof the planet with combined plasma cannons. Another victory point! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king19.jpg On the right flank my Plaguebearers landed behind the Gaunts trying to get the linebreaker victory point, hoping to deny them! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king21.jpg The combat in the centre of the table continued, with the Daemon Prince and Great Unclean One mopping up small tyranid creatures with a degree of ease. This wiped out yet another squad. Witht he sheer amount of Gaunts dying in this comabt, I was pretty pleased with the game so far. Tyranids Turn Four! On the right flank the Tyranids surged ahead against the newly appeared Plague Bearers, the Tervigon throwing his weight into the mix. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king22.jpg On the left flank the Mawlocs burst from the ground making up for their first failed attempt by killing five of the marines number, leaving the squad reduced to just four. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king23.jpg The Terminators in the center of the board entered into combat with the Hive Guard, the combat resulting in the death of one of Guard, with the Terminators consolidating. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king24.jpg The Combat in the center of the field was joined by the Tyrannofex and yet another squad of Gaunts which seemed to come from nowhere. The amount of models spawned onto the battlefield at this point was really over facing, and the sheer weight of numbers was beginning to show on the Daemon Prince and Great Unclean one. Despite being able to kill the Tyrannofex in the center of the board, the Daemon Prince was overwhelmed by the swarming 'nids and was also removed as a casualty. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king25.jpg On the right flank the gaunts reduced the plaguebearers down to only 5 of their number left. And whilst they also killed two gaunts in reply in close combat, it wasn;t looking particularly great for them! Despite my leader dropping dead, I was still in the lead! Victory Point so far: Chaos :5 Tyranids: 2 Chaos Turn Five! My turn began with the Chaos Marines on my left flank rushing into the bastion to try and save themselves from the Mawlocs. Any cover at this point would be better than just standing their getting mushed. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king27.jpg The Terminators in the center of the board descended upon the remaining Hive Gaurd in a cloud of gore as they tore it limb from limb! Another Victory point! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king26.jpg The Great Unclean one in the center of the table took a few more gaunts down, as he too succumbed to the weight of number that had been thrown at him in close combat. He vanished back into the warp with a slight chuckle and a gassy burp. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king28.jpg Tyranids Turn Five! On the left flank the Mawlocks split up. One remained destroy the Bastion, killing all but the champion causing the last member of that squad to remain pinned in the ruins of the building. The other Mawloc sunk below the earth, burrowing to get a shot at the terminators. The Tervigon at the center of the board had made its way down from the combat with the Great Unclean One and was heading for the Obliterators, whilst the Gaunts fromt hat combat made straight for the terminators. The right flank saw the Plaguebearers wiped out, and the gaunts consolidated back into the chaos deployment zone. Claimign line breaker. In combat the Obliterators lost a member of their squad. Victory Point so far: Chaos :6 Tyranids: 5 Chaos Turn six Damn those vile bugs! I Knew I was in operation "Don't concede any more points!", so my terminators ran as fast as their suits of armour would let them, and managed to get into the Tyranid deployment zone! They just had to hold onto it long enough to make it count. They shot their bolters at the oncoming gaunts, killing two, but it wasn't enough to stop them. The Marines on the right flank had managed to get into shooting range of the gaunts in the chaos deployment zone, again killing two but not enough to cause them to worry. The combat between the Tyrannofex and the Obliterators resulted in them losing another of their squad, just one remained! http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king29.jpg I just had to keep what I had alive for the 'nids last turn and I had managed another desperate victory! Tyranids Turn Six The Mawloc erupted from the ground beneath the terminators, wiping the squad out. http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king30.jpg The Obliterator managed to hold his nerve and survived the last round of combat with the Tervigon, but it was all for nothing, as I had lost my Line breaker point, and the terminator squad putting both of us at six points each. I could live with a draw! On the right flank, the tervigon and the gaunts let loose a volley of living ammunition, reducing the marines to 5 men, but they held their ground, I was still drawing. I could still come out of the battle with the favour of the Gods!.. Sadly the draw didn't last, as the champion on the left flank, the last remaining member of his squad, was eaten by the Mawloc, giving kingy the point he needed to win, and costing me the game. DAMN YOU VILE BUGS! Board at the end of the game: http://www.golden-throne.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/king31.jpg Final Victory Points: Chaos :6 Tyranids: 7 Conclusion: Well, for me this was frightening game, the number of squads spawned by the tervigons was really great, but really horrible thing. It really felt like i was facing off against a swarm of aliens, just how 'Nids shpould be, but I just didn;t think I;d be able to deal with them. I think I'd have liked my squads to show up from reserve a little sooner. In hindsight I should have started the game with my Obliterators on the board. I was happy to deepstrike everything else, and despite them showing up late, the things that did deepstrike did what I wanted them to do. They killed vital squads and granted me victory points. However the Oblits needed to be on the board straight away, weakening the bigger creatures so the Monstrous creatures could finish them off in combat. Speaking of monstrous creatures, the Prince and the Great Unclean One really held their ground and pretty much made sure I was still in the game. If the damned Mawloc hadn't killed my terminators in the final turn this could well have been a victory still, but sadly the dice God's disagreed with me. Oh well, better luck next time! Polythemus
i've been at the wrong end of more than a few mawloc burrowings. they are tough. lascannons and vehicles help against this. Nice pics you got there! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280731-1500-points-word-bearers-vs-tyranids/#findComment-3471280 Share on other sites
BrotherCaptainArkhan
You have some outstanding Word Bearers. When I get around to painting the ones I've got in mind I hope they'll look this cool. Bad luck on the game - have to say I'm surprised you put so much in reserve (unless Oblits have to start in reserve and I didn't know about it) - you basically lost 2 turns of shooting that could have turned things around for you early on. Early kills are critical against horde armies in my experience. Well done though - a very closely fought battle, looks like you had a great time, and again, beautiful Word Bearers! Kythnos
Again, a really enjoyable battle report! Thanks for posting this! :) What I think you could have done differently (in addition to your reserve decisions), is to send your Daemon Prince to kill his big monsters instead of the small bugs. With his number of attacks, AP2 as an MC, high WS and Fleshbane he had really good chances of taking one out per turn, especially with his mobility. I think you got distracted by the huge number of bugs on the field, but killing the big beasts could have stopped them from spawning more of them (I think killing the Tervigons also inflicts damage on the gants nearby - could someone check that?). The same goes basically for your Great Unclean One. But still, the battle was really close, so your tactic was close to winning too :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280731-1500-points-word-bearers-vs-tyranids/#findComment-3471725 Share on other sites
Tzen
Yeah, along with the Oblits wrongly being in reserve, I really should have put the focus on the large creatures. Still, we live and learn! And to be honest I think once I was in combat with just one of the large creatures, Kingy would have poured loads of smaller monsters in to tar pit them! It was a really fun game though, looking forward to coming back around xmas for another game!
