Magnets for Death Company

Hello B&C, I recently convinced one of my friends to play 40k (WOO!) and he's decided to go Blood Angels/Death Company and they have a fair few options. I reckon he should magnetise them so I'm wondering what size and strength of magnet would he need?

I currently have a 1/8 drill bit along with some matching sized magnets, would these be good? and what sort of drill should i use for the holes? I have a cordless electric drill, but I'm worried about destroying the minis.

Any help would be appreciated.

A cordless might be a bit hard to control... A pin vice would be a better option, they're cheap as chips on ebay. A 3mm magnet in each part that you're magnetising would be more than enough strength, I've done some swaps with 2mm, so 3 will be even better. :D

Yeah, you really want a pin vice for plastic minis.

For magnetising arms at the shoulder (which is usually the best way of doing it) 3mm x 1.5mm is a good size in the n40 strength range (which is the easiest kind to get, assuming you're using neodymium). If you can get hold of n50 strength magnets you can drop to 3mm x 1mm and have the same quality bond with less drilling, which is convenient. They tend to be more expensive and harder to find in the sizes you want, although I notice you're in Australia, which is where I import 90% of my magnets from in the first place, so you might have less difficulty.

The standard GW 1mm drill bit is fine for boltgun barrels, but they usually look better if they're drilled out a little more. I'm using a 1.10mm drill bit for the new tac squad guns. Barrel sizes do vary slightly between kits, I've noticed. A set of bits that runs between 1mm and 2mm should be quite easy to come by and will cover any special/heavy weapons and the like, too.
