Breachers in the Ultramarines.

Greetings brothers,

My question is about the breacher squads. I really like the idea of adding breachers to my Ultramarine army, I think the giant shield resembles the idea of the roman legions tortoise formation, but Im not a huge fan of them having bolters. I have been looking over and over HH: betrayal for some way to give them CCW and this is where I need your aid.

Can any of you think of a way to arm them with CCW and still follow the rules?

Or do you think there might be some kind of squad like this coming up for the XIIIth when they appear in a book?

Thank you for your attention.

Give them the close combat weapons and holsters, bolt pistols simply count as CCW in combat and you can't get an additional attack with the shield anyway, so it really doesn't matter. For bolters use some green stuff maybe, make some straps and have them slung over their backs?

That's option A.

The pricier option B is making them an elite formation. Command Squad armed with combat shields, if you don't mind missing out on the boarding rules. Maybe we'll get lucky and FW will develop a special unit for the XIII that utilizes boarding shields, reminiscent of the Evocati in Betrayer

What irritates me is that a Breacher squad is 10 men minimum.

OOOOOOR...

You could make a modified bolter/pike thing the custodes use.  Instead of the power blade, use chain blades.  It will visually match what they are armed with and will give them the Roman vibe you are looking for.

Yeah I converted a Salamander using this idea. Though the overall look may make them less like Roman soldiers and a bit cumbersome.

I want that model!

As said above, considering the Evocati on Amatura, there´s absolutely no reason why you shouldn´t include some Breacher Marines in your Ultramarine list.

The option with the Boltguns on straps seems to be the one I´d prefer, because boltguns AND CCW makes them, at least in my head something special.

It went through several stages, the WIP thread for doing it can be found here. If you want to check it out.

Thanks for the lot of great advice. I think the idea of the bolters in straps is the one Im most in favour of currently, the spear idea might be a bit above my modelling skill. I will check out some tutorials though, see what I can come up with.

Also, rereading the rules in HH: Betrayal, doesnt it say I can make a veteran squad into a breacher squad? In that case I should be able to exchange their weapons if Im not mistaken?

Erm... nope... you cann give everyone of them a power weapon and/ or a volkite serpenta... but unfortunately no boarding shield...they have some verteran skills to choose out of... but no boarding shields, sry^^

Edit:
Ahh there we go... you´re meaning the "veteran upgrade" phrase in the special rules of the LBS, don´t you?
In the faq it is written that you can remove the line because it´s a leftover of the testphase ;-)

If you feel spears are too much work, swords and axes behind boarding shields look rather good - after all the Hastati and even Praetorian Guard used sword/shield to great effect, there were a number among them who went for axes but it tended to only be among the Praetorians due to their extra freedom with equipment.

Yeap thats what I meant. Damn... Well, I might go for giving them chainswords and bolters with slings over the shoulder.

Grotsmasha: Model them count-as combat shield? But they already have breacher shields?... Im confused.

Marshal: Sure, the space wolf chainswords are good, I have a few of them. But I think the chainswords from the MK II assault kit might be better, they have a les wolfy feel and I think they are shorter.

I think Grotsmasha's meaning if you use them as either a Vet Tac Squad or a Command Squad, plus this way it gives you more playability for your time/money spent :)

Ah understood. Hmmm, sure it would be an expensive unit, but the amount of detail options would be great. I actually like that idea better. A tac. vet. squad with shields and CCW could be a great bodyguard for a Praetor.
