Cyndakill
The Repentant "We shall repay our brother's sins with flesh, blood and steel" http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb148/Silent-Saudade/TheRepentant_zps0e6c9656.png Chapter Name: The Repentant Founding: Unknown Circa M31 Gene-Seed: Luna Wolves Homeworld: Fleet Based Chapter Master: Loken Allegiance: Loyalist Colours: White, Black, Red, Gold Strength: 5 Active Companies with Unknown in 5 Reserve Companies History: After the events of Isstavan IV, the return of The Eisenstein and the revelation of Horus and his Traitor Legion's treachery the Imperium began to prepare itself for war. One of these preparations was to find and destroy any holdouts of Traitor Astartes within proximity to Terra, small bands of Astartes both loyal and traitorous were routed and killed or taken prisoner. Of the Astartes taken prisoner, a small group of Sons of Horus were detained, originally numbering in the hundreds during their capture the loyalist extermination squads took extreme prejudice in eliminating many of their number. Imprisoned during Horus' siege of Terra they felt the psychic blast of the Emperor as he unleashed his final blow upon Horus. During these few moments they became aware of the full extent of their Primarch's treachery, but also of his return to sanity before he was obliterated. Distraught the remaining Sons of Horus retreated inwards and for the next few years appeared all but comatose, walking corpses whose eyes spoke of pain and betrayal. Trials began against the Astartes of the Traitor Legions who had been imprisoned and many were sentenced to death by a hung jury. As the court came to the former Sons of Horus an old Astartes entered, bearing orders from the Inquisition they were to be placed in his custody and brought before the High Lords of Terra. Of the eighty who had entered the prisons, only fifty five left. The Astartes were transported in total restraint and sensory deprivation, and only when they reached their destination were they returned their senses. They had been split in to groups of four and placed in cells barely big enough for the four men to stand together. Here they waited for weeks without food, nor water, for four weeks they saw no light and heard no sounds bar their own laboured breathing and the vermin that infested the prison. Finally the silence was broken by the deep throbbing sound of explosions, bolter fire and plasma cannons. The medley of battle awoke something inside of the Astartes and as the sound of heavy boots approached they blinked their eyes in the growing light. Before them strode a fully armored Astartes, in the dull light they could make out the colours they had thrown away, a chaos space marine stood before them. "Brothers, we have come to save you, come fight against these loyalist dogs." and with this he tore the door from it's hinges. In an instant the Astartes were upon him, bare hands scrambling across ceramite, grasping armoured plate and tearing with inhuman strength. The wolf inside them had awoken and with a primal ferocity they tore their traitorous brother apart, but seconds after they had laid hands upon him he disappeared and the sounds of battle were silenced. The Astartes searched through the prison, encountering their imprisoned brothers, who like them had awakened from their silence. They found no trace of the Traitor legions, they did find seven bodies of Astartes and after some investigation found that they had celebrated upon the arrival of the traitors and were killed by their cellmates. As the remaining prisoners moved through the prison they were drawn towards a natural light, spilling in from a heavy blast door that had been cast ajar. Past the door they entered a courtyard, where an ancient solitary Astartes stood, clad in the armor of the Luna Wolves. The founding of The Repentant began that day, their anger and primal rage towards the phantoms of their fallen brothers had proven them loyal. They were granted resources by the Inquisition to begin their chapter, a chapter sworn to both defend the Imperium and to hunt down and destroy their traitorous brothers. The Astartes that had spared their lives and awaited them in the courtyard left them, allowing them to choose their own destiny as he followed a path laid before him by a higher power. They took upon themselves the old armor of the Luna Wolves with one change, their right arm was painted blood red and adorned with gold. The Repentant marked themselves this way due to the sins of their brothers, they felt responsible for every death caused by the Traitor legions and especially the wounds Horus inflicted upon the Emperor. They saw this arm as bathed in the blood of the innocent and as a mark to all of their sin. Homeworld: The Repentant have no homeworld, but instead follow reports of the Black Legion along the edge of the Imperium. They possess an impressive fleet which houses the entire chapter. While some squads have been assigned to guard the Eye of Terror and worlds commonly harassed by the Black Legion, the chapter does not hold any world as it's base of recruitment. Instead potential recruits are supplied by the inquisition, when an Inquisitor comes across a potential candidate they are transported to the fleet. Their is rumor that The Repentant were involved in the destruction of Cthonia. Chapter Doctrine: The Repentant employ a modified speartip approach that they used when a part of the sixteenth legion. They have a focus on creating flexible firing groups with support from melee units. Within the Chapter there are a large number of dreadnoughts, due to the respect each member affords for their seniors many have been interred in the sarcophagi their wisdom invaluable in both battle, the training of initiates and council on all matters. The chapter, wary of their history, has formed itself around the concept of the Mournival. Each company is headed by a Captain, a Librarian, a Chaplain and a Dreadnought. The entire chapter leadership is centred around the main Mournival which consists of a the Chapter Master, the Chapter Librarian, the Head Chaplain and a Venerable Dreadnought who had fought during the pre-heresy years. The Chapter Master casts aside his name when he gains the title and takes the name of Loken, the chapter reveres Loken for his efforts during Isstavan III and his position within the last Mournival. He was viewed as incorruptible and has become and aspiration for all Astartes within the chapter. The Chapter shuns most use of mechanised armour, instead preferring to create firing lines and a speartip or assault from orbit using drop pods. Chapter Beliefs Due to the founding Astartes brief connection with the Emperor during the death of Horus, they disapprove of any belief that the Emperor is a god but rather hold him as an ideal for all mankind. The perfect human being, but a human being nonetheless. The Chapter feels itself responsible for the events of the Horus Heresy and possess a hatred unlike any other towards their traitorous brothers in the Black Legion. The Chapter is not adverse to untainted Xenos such as the Tau or the Eldar, seeing the Eldar as victims of Chaos and the Tau as only a threat to the Imperium rather than the universe. Gene-Seed The Repentant gene-seed is that of the Luna Wolves, due to their close connection to Horus, every gene-seed is inspected with extreme measures for any mutation or corruption by Chaos, many being rejected for minor faults. New initiates are constantly tested and watched, any hint of taint or weakness of character is either dealt with harshly or corrected. Hrvat
First I would like to welcome you to the Bolter and Chainsword and especially this litter corner of the site. I hope your stay will be productive and benefitial to you and others. Now on to the subject at hand. In recent years there has been an upsurge of traitor loyalist and I had both the pleasure and the horror of reading many of those stories. Your premise is interesting but the most important question you have to anwser is WHY? Why should the new found imperium do such a thing. In addition leaving Heresy events described in a vague way is from a setting point of view much better than giving direct explanations and discriptions. In addition from the Outcast Dead we are informed there were only a few dozen marines imprisoned in such a way, at least on Terra. Another question. If they are suspect of possible coruption why would Imperium even bother, especially with their better safe than sorry policy. There are only two events when traitor gene-seed might have been used and those are 13th and 21st foundings. Then you need to explain how come the chapter has such an extensive fleet considering they are fleet based and of dubious origin. Then again you have said that Inquisition provides them with recruits - so would that make them a chapter linked to the inquistion like the Exorcists or the Red Hunters. Also since you mention that a Venerable Dreadnought is from the pre-heresy era in what era of the Imperium have you invisioned your chapter to function, since the official background maintains that only Bjorn the fellhanded lived while the great crusade was fought. Cyndakill
Thanks heaps Hrvat! I'm excited to fluff out this chapter. Your premise is interesting but the most important question you have to answer is WHY? Why should the new found Imperium do such a thing. The way I want to take this is that it was a direct intervention by Iacton Qruze (The ancient marine clad in luna wolf armour) swinging the newly found power of the Inquisition to give his brother's a chance of redemption. I also see them as a much more toned down version of the Grey Knights, while they were created to fight Daemons and had to be incredibly powerful and talented, the repentant were created to specifically hunt down their traitorous brothers. In addition leaving Heresy events described in a vague way is from a setting point of view much better than giving direct explanations and descriptions. I felt the primal rejection of their traitorous brothers was important and the binding of them to the Inquisition and possibly even the Grey Knights (without direct mention of this). In addition from the Outcast Dead we are informed there were only a few dozen marines imprisoned in such a way, at least on Terra. Imprisoned on Luna? Honestly I was hoping to fluff them somewhere close enough to be connected to the Emperor and Horus by the Emperor's killing blow. Another question. If they are suspect of possible coruption why would Imperium even bother, especially with their better safe than sorry policy. There are only two events when traitor gene-seed might have been used and those are 13th and 21st foundings. I see the suspect of possible corruption coming from within their Chapter. A deep rooted suspicion of corruption due to Isstavan III. Also since you mention that a Venerable Dreadnought is from the pre-heresy era in what era of the Imperium have you invisioned your chapter to function, since the official background maintains that only Bjorn the fellhanded lived while the great crusade was fought. I see them as being a part of the second founding but not participating in battle for a long time. The Venerable Dreadnought in itself is not from the pre-heresy but rather a pre-heresy veteran who had been injured at a later point and placed in a Dreadnought carapace. (Also till otherwise stated in Canon it can be assumed that the Venerable Dreadnought is Iacton Qruze or even Loken. More than likely he was just a pleb but because the leadership shrugs off their own names it is lost).
