Fast attack - What to get?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I'm looking at getting either a Storm Eagle or a Caestus assault ram. Which one to get though?

Or should I wait for the new Dread claw?

I want to carry troops (both marines and termies) But that's not the only reason I want one, firepower is also a consideration, but predominately I want it to look cool.

Initially I was thinking of a caestus, but the Eagle is also pulling at my wallet.

So guys, which do you prefer and why?

EDIT: I literally posted this then realised that the Caestus is heavy support, but apart from that point, my question still stands smile.png

I'd say look to which Legion/s you're doing, will it fit the aesthetic of the army as a whole? Will it fit your gaming style? I'm personally going for 2 Eagle's as my FA with a Skyhunter squad as well for fast non-flyer firepower, this also fits with my Xth Legion terminator army and my intended play style of hammering everything at range with armoured vehicles and tanks then slaughtering the remnants in CC.

Plus eagle's DO look nice :p but so does the caustus :(

"intended play style of hammering everything at range with armoured vehicles and tanks then slaughtering the remnants in CC"

Surely you would be better off with a Caestus then? Afterall they are flying tanks ;)

It'll most likely be for my Iron Warriors legion. I did think if I took a Storm eagle I can use it in 40k for my IW's as well.

I'm also considering either an EC or SoH allied detachment, if I did EC then I'd want a skyhunter squadron and use the DA's Ravenwing master Jetbike model so I'd have to take a Caestus (or start a whole other legion) If I did SoH they'd be first company with reavers and justaerin (and Abby) so maybe a Dreadclaw would be best?

I really can't decide, hence me asking you guys :P

you can use the Caestus in 40k as well, I'm intending on getting one for my wolves force :D

a Dreadclaw would be nice admittedly - though checking through my copy of Betrayal I can't find the rules (unless ofcs I'm blind), and the Kharybdiss comes out with Extinction [book 3] and looks like it will be an awesome boarding torpedo-come-heavy delivery system :D

personally what style warfare do you play currently? would you want to stick with this or go in the opposite direction?

My wolves are very much a counter-thrust force, I hold back with heavy weapons fire and let the enemy come to me, then when they charge me I paste them with lots of weaponry, receive the charge and hopefully hit back hard enough to make them flee or to hold them in melee where I tend to win.

My Iron Hands will be much more about using fast, manoeuvrable firepower (Vindicators, Spartans and Typhons) to crush the worst enemy fire (plasmas, lascannons and power weapons), then my terminators stream out to crush any remaining opposition in close combat - so both quite similar (the final deathblow almost always comes in CC), they differ where my wolves will hold back and receive, my iron hands will walk into the fire and force the combat :D

Chaos can't use the Caestus in 40k though can they?

Dreadclaw is a dedicated transport option for a SoH army. I can't wait for book 3 at easter! will be sorely tempted to buy all the resin then :P

I play Iron Warriors, so all about the seige warefare and assaulting the breach.

Ahh I've only ever played a purist berserker force for chaos haha - hope they do have the Caestus :)

In that case go for Breachers as your troops, backed up by Terminators, Support Squads and Destroyers - plus the GD IWs had at least a couple wielding TH/SS type weaponry :p

Can you have 6 bikes with MM? Thought it was 1 every 3?

I'm planing on a jetbike squadron myself, probably as part of an EC detachment.

The more I look at it the more I think I'd be better off with a stormeagle, which is a shame as I really like the caestus, flying tanks ftw! I may have to get both

I've got to check but I'm sure that you can any/all packing whatever heavy weapon you want - whether that's the supreme anti-tank MMs or anti-horde (got to try this vs Nids or Orks haha) Volkite Culverins. Also good choice imo. it gives you anti-air, decent transport and very good firepower for roughly the same cost :) plus if you run assault marines they can jump out without needing to hover iirc.

Its only 1 every 3, however heavy bolters on the other 2 are still really nice! Tanks will hate you along with everything in between! The Volkite Culverins are just brutal on bikes as well. But for a flier, Storm Eagle all the way. Its very versatile, however it is a PAIN to build without tools.

can we get those yet? msn-wink.gif

Wouldn't it be worth waiting? ;)

Heathens you've peaked the curious savage in me - what be these Fire Hawks? tongue.png

The new 30k gunship with the twin mega-bolters sticking out it's nose. Like an A-10 on acid and steroids at the same time.

x3 Seekers, tricked out

x3 Storm Eagles

x3 Fire Hawks

This is the Heresy; think bigger. tongue.png

I'll add to this,

x1 failed marraige

x1 bottle of scotch

x1 Sense of awesome by fielding such an army

Welcome to Thailand boys biggrin.png

back on topic... again tongue.png Storm Eagles to start off, a Caestus or two and then get Fire Raptors for support tongue.png

Sorry to be picky, it's a fireraptor, not a hawk :) I'd love 3 of them though, and I'm in the process of buiding a seeker squad with combi weapons and a storm eagle/caestus will most likely carry them in. But I'm not sure it's particularly 4th legion style
