I'm considering converting some rough riders for my renegade force, converted from mounted marauders. has anyone had any experience with rough riders? are they worth it and whats the best way to use them? is mogul kamir any good, might be fun to convert a traitor version :) thanks.

I think they work best as counter assault units to help protect your own lines, and like hendrik said if you want performance the Fast Attack slot offers better choices elsewhere. If you don't mind that then go for it! :D The sad fact is Rough Riders are much unloved by GW so practical experience is few and far between these days... :(

Those saying that the unit is made for counter attack are spot on. Anytime you move the RRs ahead the enemy will simply throw a few, emphasis on few, bolter rounds its way and either eliminate or neuter the squad. I'd make sure to give them special weapons (assault ones) so they can be a bit more versatile. They work real well with an mostly mechanized force since they can use the tanks as cover and make enemy close ranged units make a tough choice, kill a tank and get charged by RRs next turn OR kill some RRs and let the tank live another round.

Well, I've used them on the attack with some success, albeit back in 5th edition. I advance them behind a hellhound and chimeras to block LOS or give cover from those "few bolter rounds" then open up a gap between the vehicles for them to charge through. It worked pretty well and they can hit quite hard on the charge.

The problem is that they are rather fragile -- basic guardsman stats, so its true that it doesn't take much to send them running.

So they're a bit of a glass hammer but very fun. People very infrequently face them or grossly underestimate them due to their poor reputation. So in a tournament situation I think they could give you and edge as they'll be overlooked until they've annihilated something expensive (I used to love using them for terminator-hunting, which they're not good at any more, but they could still lay major hurt on something power-armoured or less).

I was considering them mostly from a modelling aspect ;) but its also useful hearing about them rules-wise. rules question how many attacks does Mogul Kamir have when he charges (he gains D3+1 for his cyber-steed but also +2 for rage), so does he gain D3+3 attacks when he charges or am i reading this wrong? thanks for any clarification.

You both may have a point their.  I do have some Death Riders which I didn't when I got the parts for those Rough Riders above. I don't paint horses very well so my Wife wanted to paint them. She loves horses and has painted them in a lot of different scales over the years. I think when she gets done I will make a breather hood for the horses. I have been thinking about breathers for my mordians too... when I get to it I will post pictures.

Man you guys get me in a lot of trouble..

If you do make some rebreathers (human and/or horsey) I'd love to see a tutorial ;)

As for Rough Riders, I'm going to follow the common idea and make mine as a counter attack unit. Initially I'm planing a double-meltagun, melta-bomb set up. If I get more i might make the option for double flamers. I shy at the prospect of putting 15-point weapons in BS3 hands though, so my plasma guns will be saved for veterans.

Why not both :) I have about 30 awaiting attention, it's taking me a while to cast enough heads for the riders but once I have them all done i will play some games where I plonk 30 of them down one flank and see what happens.

May as we'll ask here, if my rider has dark blue armour and white cloth, what might be a good colour for his giant birds plumage?

Been stuck on the colours for a long while now

ep, i think my renegade force will have some converted rough riders in the near future msn-wink.gif what would you recommend would be the best special weapon for them? send them tank-hunting or troop killing? i'm thinking either meltagun or flamer smile.png

With out looking. I would say flamers and a Melta bomb SGT.

However, it really comes down to your play style. Take into account the points level you can best use them. Make them a very powerful unit in smaller games or a unit easily ignored in larger games.

Wow! evil killer ostriches smile.png what did you use for the mounts?

they were from the phoenix club, a community project from years ago, i liked them at the time and i like them still. i wish you could have a rough rider command squad that could make them troops, an all cavalry guard regiment would probably be fun to play and if not, they would look nice before you had to start putting them back in the box :)

When I was young, some moons ago, rough riders wore guard issue grey fatigues, a white or red helmet and went ork sticking with explosive lances, all the while wearing trendy reflective goggles and riding real horses!

But seriously, I have been tempted by guard in the past almost purely for the modelling options for these flash cavalrymen of the future!

Melts guns make them more multipurpose -- tank hunting and MEQ. Flamer makes them more anti-infantry. Both are viable options to be sure.

Death riders can't take special weapons but have 2 wounds, carapace armour, and feel

No pain which us a decent trade off.
