Salamanders commission thread - 10/13/13

Hi guys,

painted this one up in exchange for a few old metal daemonettes.

For some reason, the green in the pictures wasn't half as bright as the real thing. So I had to saturate the green layers in gimp - which made everything sorta fuzzy. Still I think this is as good an impression as can be given. smile.png

I'm especially proud of the scale cloak, since I tried out some new techniques. C&C appreciated!

I don't normally like that model even with the best of paintjobs, but your colours make it look good! The warm tones - the gold, the two different shades of lava and the power blade - all work very well together. Subtly different, yet blending together.

If I had to criticise it, the eyes seem quite muted in comparison to the rest of the miniature. Not sure if that's just the pictures.

I think you have done a great job with this. I would only do some things different out of personal taste. (More orange in the fire)

And as much as I love Vulkan He'stan, the posing of the right arm with the spear has always seemed bad to me. I wish I possessed the skill to change it.

Hi guys, great to hear you like Vulkan. :)

@Zincite: Thanks a lot - I don't like the sculpt either. Imho the model's way too busy, making it look like toys from the late 90ies. :)

Concerning the eyes: I don't think this is the pictures' fault, since this was the first time I painted yellow lenses. Well... It'll get better, I guess. :D

@Sicksix: Why don't you? Personally, I think it wouldn't be too difficult. Finecast allows for easy bending of the parchment (just place it in a cup of hot water for a minute or two) and the angle of Vulkan's hand won't change much if he pointed the spear in another direction, so it shouldn't require too much work to just turn it around and "jam" it into some sort of rock or enemy.

More orange in the fire would probably have been a good idea, but since this was also the first time I painted fire, I wasn't too daring. Especially not as this isn't my miniature, but a customer's. :)

@Targetlock: Thanks. The base was the customer's idea - he thought nothing could fit Salamanders as much as a lava base. ^^

@ChromeZephyr: Don't worry - If I took offence everytime someone dislikes Vulkan's horrible pose (and armour), I guess I'd have to sue almost the entire wargaming community. :D

I like painting scripture on parchment - it's not even that hard. All you need is a good (and very, very fine brush) and the ability to hold your breath for a second or two. :D

@topic:

The funny thing is, the customer liked the miniature so much he asked me to paint another centrepiece of his army, a dreadnought called "Ashmantle" - the Forge World model. As soon as we agreed about the payment, he asked me to also paint the rest of his army, beginning with a squad of five scouts. Which I present here:

They might need a few touch-ups (for example on the lenses of the sniper scopes) as well as highlights on the rocks, but they're mostly finished.

Also, don't worry about the colour. As I said when I first presented Vulkan: for some reason, my camera won't show how green the armour really is. This time, I didn't want to doctor the pictures - so here they are. :)
