Night Raptors

Well, I found some really clear pictures of the Night Raptors, specifically their helmets. To be honest, my opinions haven't really changed that much. I mean, I don't know. Something about the helmets just strike the wrong chord.

I'm of the mind that Forgeworld was attempting to mold an actual death mask into the helmet, but I'm kind of iffy on whether or not they succeeded. The detail is actually quite amazing. But at the same time, they resonate too much with the newer CSM Raptors for my taste. I don't know, maybe I'll get used to them.

What are y'alls impressions?

Do you see any conversion possibilities?

EDIT: I have also decided to see what is everyone's opinion about the fluff, whether it be ancient fluff from the Index Astartes articles to the fluff in Massacre.

I think conversion will be limited because the body is looking like the Ashen Circle, to be one piece. Head swaps abound however, we will see if they do for NL what they just did for SoH, and offer chest/head's for the Terror Squads, then we can get a really good mix going.

For me the winged helms on Night Lords have always been off putting, too comical. I know there supposed to insite fear in their opponents but they kinda just make me laugh.

No doubt the old GW ones are far more uglier than these though.

That being said i would love to see these minis painted :)

In my mind, the VIII is about terrorizing the foe. That's their thing; their raison d'être, if you will. Now, an Astartes would be terrifying enough on its own, but I think the Night Lords would push it to the psychological edge and if that means leering gargoyle-like faces on their helmets, so be it. Personally, I'm not a fan of the batwings, except for the Legion icon on a shoulder or chest, but I think the masks fit in with their whole Legion identity.

im with Kol on this one...not my taste, I think they should have been more  a kin to human skulls to represent the death mask paint. these look more already demonic possession has occurred or years of warp exposure. although I am happy that the bat wings are smaller and a little less likely to get stuck when exiting rhinos and such. also love the body pose on the close up really catches the feel of charging in for a fast assault

Use my raison d'être.

Kage that there's a big old paddling in the wise words of firepower

And to think I was going to start whipping out some French...

...I'll take my crepes elsewhere dry.png

Those batwings say try hard. Would've preferred just the sku-SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!!!

did that just slip out again? hmm

I will reserve final judgement until paintjob, sometimes it does wonders

I know in the lightning tower it mentions the NLs fixing alien skulls to their visors and also the wings. I'm in two minds about the wings really but I can see what they are doing here with these guys and the newer SoH models as the first step in the evolution of the design of modern chaos marines.

I think the reason these guys may look a little too chaos like is because it's intentionally meant to be like that as these guys are proto-Raptors.

I like these helmets much more now with these clear(ish) pictures.

I LOVE the older style raptors, but I really think those are more the result of their armor warping over time, turning them into literal birds of prey. That would look rather out of place in the Heresy era.

It matches with my image of them. Winged helm, skulls of xenos design. Pretty much a Night Lord look.

But while it does look like a standard Night Lord, it is also kind of 'off.' Too much detail in one area, and the only place Night Lords can have wings without looking foolish is their shoulder emblem.

This, I think as mentioned in the Erebus video FW have gone for a look that ties in with the current 40k range and have done so with the Raptors too.

Now that said, from those images, the bat wings are a little OTT for me! A splash of paint or the sterile background pics of the FW website may make all the difference!

All in though I think they fit the bill of a terror squad devil.gif

Edit for clarity.

After being less than impressed with them on initial viewing they're starting to grow on me. Whether that was due to poor lighting on the original pics or whatever who knows but I'm liking the look of them overall now. Cringing slightly at the though of their price (I'm shooting between £35 and £45) since I want 15 of them :/

Either that or the assault bundle and copious amounts of conversion

Well, I like the effort put into the deathmask. The wings themselves are better than GW's oversized headpieces. Individually, I like every piece. For some reason its how the pieces go to together. It's kind of liking a character and certain aspects of a series, but being kind of "ehh" about the series itself.
