Unremembered Empire....initial review

Recommended Posts

I finished reading this book this morning, and I have to say that it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I've done my best at trying to read this whole thread, but in the end I did a search to see if certain things had been discussed yet, namely

that Narek would appear to be a good character to join Malcador, Garro et al.

When Narek is talking to John, he comments that basically he has no allies. He is a traitor to his legion, most of the loyalists hate him because of the actions of the Word Bearer, yet he is fiercely loyal to the Emperor, which has been demonstrated time and time again.

Furthermore, we see him in both UR and Vulan Lives consorting with demons and the warp, yet is able to resist its power and currently has no intention to succumb to the power of the warp.

These are all characteristics that he shares with Garro and Loken.

So here's hoping that Garro mounts an infiltration operation and procures the services of Narek - perhaps with the promise from Malcador that he'll be able to lead his merry band on a mission to kill the now-demon prince Lorgar?

I need to kill Lorgar so bad, I am willing to put down this rabid beast of a thing that used to be Vulkan if need be?

This "inmortal" rabid beast who could heal himself anyway. But I think that Narek would sacrifice anything to kill Lorgar.

I still don't know why Guilliman is so sure to execute him when he keeps Dantioch alive and could use Narek, who by the way hates the new XVII legion as much as Roboute.

I need to kill Lorgar so bad, I am willing to put down this rabid beast of a thing that used to be Vulkan if need be?

Yeah, kind of this.

In his current state of mind, Lorgar is his ultimate target because he believes him directly responsible for the fall of his Legion. His understanding is that Vulkan needs to be killed before Lorgar, because he believes that only John can wield the weapon that will be used to kill Lorgar.

That's his current state of mind.

Take that situation away, and strip everything away back to the basics, and you probably do have a potential Garro recruit.

Alternatively, we know that Narek lives at the end of UR. If he wasn't going to be used in a future novel, then why not kill him off there and then? On that basis, what future role can Narek play in the HH - is there anything in the collected visions which suggests that an attempt is made on Lorgar's life that Narek may perhaps be involved with?

Not liking an idea is perfectly normal, Wade. Insulting someone and questioning his professionality just because you don't like that idea, however...

Why should Nick Kyme be exempt from being insulted for his bad ideas when Matt Ward, Robin Cruddace, Ben Counter, C.S. Groto, and Graham McNeil are burned in effigy almost every time their names are mentioned?

Questioning one's competence is different from questioning one's working ethics. You can say that PR I did sucked. Saying I did it on purpose to screw a co-worker with no evidence is another, far worse matter.

People said the same thing about ADB, that he was favouring the Night Lords and Word Bearers because he played with them or they were his favourite Legions, whatever...He got mad, as anyone would and should.

Now you're accusing Kyme of not only throwing his stories' quality away but of putting a whole team's efforts in jeopardy to make Vulkan awesomer...

I totally can see Narek taking an oath of moment in not too long if the BL so decides. He is a solid contender for the "Janus" role and that name could mean volumes in reference to the duality and self splitting reality of being "The" Loyal Word Bearer.

However, I hope Guilliman has him stood in front of a wall and shot. We Remember Calth.

Okay, I'm sorry. Let me rephrase my complaints to make everyone happy.

Making Vulkan unkillable was a stroke of genius, stunning in its brilliance, which caused me to weep tears of awe, but I don't think it was the greatest idea in the history of ever.

However, Nick Kyme should still be hailed as a god among men for his glorious addition to 30k lore, which eclipses even beautiful notions like wonderful idea that the Space Wolves are the Lost Legion killing Emperor ordained Executioner Legion whose shamans were exempt from the Nikea Edict in its pure magnificence.

HAIL KYME!

KYME DOMINATUS!

If Malcador could send someone to Cath(Rubio). How come no one will tell the people attending the party at Maccrage that the Emperor is still walking?

Well for one that's Calth and not Macragge. Two, nothing just yet. Which begs the single biggest question to my mind thus far, Why has there been no rallying call?

Has the throne made any one single request for aid to be brought to Terra? We forget as readers who know how this story plays out that the characters within dont. Guilliman is worried about Dad, but has Dad (or by extension Malcador) Been sending anyone to call for their aid to Terra? I imagine Sanguinius and Jaghati are simply going to head there because they need to. Dead or Alive, Practicals or Theoretical, They are going to see what has befallen their father.

Maybe we have underestimated just how much the Seige of Terra caught the Loyalists off Guard. What if the Emperor had Ordered the Various Sons to maintain posts about the Imperium at large because of now unpredictable the Heresy had been thus far? But before he can call for aid the traitors translate into Sol and cut him off from Galactic communication at large. Even the Emperor needs the relay choirs for the Astronomicon and therefore the bulk of his psychic power to have its Galactic impact.

We are still at the beginning of the Heresy in many ways and at most merely the half way point.

...maybe because the Big E doesn't quite know who he can trust yet.  Why order another three or four Legions to come back to Terra if you're not sure they won't come into the system with their shields up, guns armed, and drop pods primed?

Agreed. Have a picture from GDUS 13 showing BLs outline of the Hersey:

That is a lot of empty spaces on the timeline if we just look at the filled spaces and the amount of books we have.....

The biggest reason I can see for the lack of communication between Macragge and Terra is mainly the Ruinstorm. It's an absolutely immense Warpstorm, and as a result has more of left the Ultramar System completely in the dark. Also remember, we know this as third party witnesses to the unfolding story, but they don't.

Dont worry Wade, I feel ya. I have lit some of those other fires you speak of, so you wont get any judging here.

Back on topic though, I think we should have a discussion on where we are, a summary. As Brother Dean illustrates, theres a long way to go, I wonder what we can figure out.

also keep BL and FW seperate...  FW is caught up in two years what has taken the BL 10 years to write.....

edit:  7 years plus since Horus Rising...

Hey.

I heard Sanguinus was going to ask the Emps to get rid of all apothecaries since they seem to all be influenced or corrupted by chaos.

....but he's going to keep his Sanguinary priests, cuz you know....they're not called apothecaries....

Anyone else notice that timeline has Istvaan IV rather than Istvaan V?

And it is Games Day US, 2013. Nothing big must have happened since it just went by without a notice.

Also, we are now in 009.M31. The Thramas Crusade is one of those blurbs that goes from 008.M31 to 009.M31.

I sense great huttburt in the nerdiverse all coalescing within this thread. When Matt Ward truly and finally destroys the public preception of your chapter only to have them forever branded as the first sons of the "Spiritual Leige" you lemme know.

The stuff going on with Vulkan is first and foremost a plot device and like any good plot device it can come and go as the story needs. Kyme is universes of quality higher than some of the people that theoretically could be writing in his place.
