Simplicity versus canon consistency

Recommended Posts

I'm in a tough spot trying to decide between keeping the background for my sector simple or more canon consistent.  The choice is to have it just be a sector of the Mechanicum that is discoered M36 out on the Eastern Fringe by an expedition fleet, or working in the Imperium a few hundred years after but still keeping it heavily a part of the Mechanicum, but including all the parts of the Imperium that it needs.

Just the Mechanicum would go as follows:

The Mechanicum fleet shows up at the Sturmkrieg Empire out on the Eastern Fringe near the Volianvan Sector (not my creation, someone else on the wiki made that).  The Magos or whoever is leading the fleet wants to annex the empire for the Mechanicum because of the vast number of factories.  He discovers a revolutionary group and decides to "help" them to get them to do all the work in exchange for making him a figurehead of the new sector, which he claims for the Mechanicum.

I think that's good, but it causes a bit of contention by people who say that the Mechanicum can't be going and gathering land.  Assuming I could write it well enough to get it published by Black Library, do you think it's within what they would allow?

The issue of canon consistency is an important one, because fanfiction wiki is intended to be a place for single universe, consistent fanfiction, and there shouldn't be blatant contradictions in the flagship story.
