Space wolves themed table

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, what do you think I should do for a space wolves themed gaming table?

I saw this and thought it was one of the coolest tables I'd ever seen

Was thinking about making something like that, but with snow and ice instead of desert. Is there any fluff on a battle where space wolves Drop Podded into snow?

Or do you guys think something more like fang would be better?

Wow, that table is amazing! Where did you find it?

How much money do you want to spend on the table? Littering it with drop pods could make it a lot more time consuming and expensive. But anyway, that idea is so amazing. I really think you should make your table like the aftermath of another battle. It would be way too cool.

That is a cool table, but by Russ that would be expensive as hell to replicate by using all of those Drop Pods. One problem is that there isn't any LOS-blocking terrain on it, but perhaps they have other themed pieces to add in as needed.

Why do you want to do snow and ice instead of the desert landscape?

Its from Warhammer World its not all that impressive in person tbh its difficult to play on due to all the open space and not all much cover. If you added in some bluffs of ice or plateaus then it would look awesome!

Ragnars Great Company is renowned for its Drop Pod Assaults so you've got plenty of basis to make a table like this if you so desired.

Yeah, after some helpful replies I got in one of my other threads I am planning on making my army a drop pod army and making them Ragnars great company instead of Egil Ironwolf.

I would make it impressive! haha, since it would be "ice world" themed I would add a little bit more to it than that. I think some broken down buildings and rock/ice shelves in a couple place would be a nice addition. Maybe tribe on fenris has been attacked and completely left in ruin...

I am also thinking about throwing down some mammoth bones like they have on the Space Wolves battle force picture.. that would be stuff for LOS blocking and fluffy.

My Space Wolves have a snow.. Icelandic esque basing theme, I would have this board be my home board to game on with friends. I think it would be fun to have my board consistent with my Armies bases.

Isn't it sweet?

Honestly, it would be cheaper than buying GW's gaming board. I could get wood panels from Home Depot or Lowes cut to size for about 30-40 bucks. I would just buy two bags of GW moon scape (50 bucks) and then it's just the basing sand, and snow flock and paint. should only be 150-200  USD for the whole project material. included. the Drop Pods would make it a bit pricey, but one drop pod box if you modeled it into the basing materials right can almost be enough material to make 3 different drop pod crashes.

Remember for sand you need non toxic play sand which is also nice and fine so it shouldn't hurt your hands when you lean on it :) tbh don't bother with snow flock just paint right on top. Spray white then use watered down blue paint to kind of "wash" everything especially in crevices then use a white spray can held at a 45 degree angle to paint it up again. My local store has done it and it look awesome and didn't take em long either!

Thanks bud, I'll look that up. Do you guys have any recommendations on painting the craters/moonscapes? I want them to have an ice look instead of a stone look. I figured I would start with a dark blue to give it a glacier effect and then try to build it up from there.. I really don't know though.

I've seen better. If you go with that kind of table, you'd better be prepared to put down allot of terrain pieces on the board. Currently it's too flat, boring and lacks imagination. If you really want to do a winter themed gaming table, have a look at:

If you read more than the first post, you'd soon realize that I plan on doing more than what is seen in the picture.. using what's pictured as a starting idea.. smh.

and I did. I merely answered to your original post and gave my own opinion, not to mention gave everybody here a link to hopefully give you some ideas and some insights.. smh.

Maverick, that was for uberwolf..

I'll admit I just skimmed. I do like the road though. If you are in the states, this is the best time of year to find things like "bones" mammoth or otherwise. The dollar stores have all their holiday stuff out you know. I am in the midst of making jungle terrain right now, well more of it actually. But I am thinking about some hateful arctic caverns and rock for my next terrain set.  I have made several game boards over the years. I would love to build another 4'/8' board but I don't have the room. Right now I have 6 2'/2' tiles made from MDF board and foam. For fun and attractive game boards I have found a good mix of permanent landscape and modular terrain work very well.

Well, good luck and update when you start I would like to see how your table turns out.

Definitely make it modular,it might look a bit less beautiful then a complete singular board due to the edges between the tiles but it will offer you more fun while playing. Personally I would go more snowy tundra then complete ice fields but that's because I like some variation in my terrain

Isn't Greenland the one with all the ice?

Green land is the one with all the Ice... true, but the soil in Iceland as well as Greenland is a very dark to a black. Even though Iceland is more "green" and visually appealing there are no natural trees (or any trees of any kind) on the Island. I didn't say the basing inspiration was Icelandic verbatim, just Icelandic esque.. moving on.

What do you mean by modular?

What do you mean by modular?

Interconnecting 1'x1' square tiles (or 2x2, 4x4, etc) of terrain that make up a full table when placed together. Biggest appeal is storage and being able to rearrange/swap out tiles to keep a single themed table different for each game.

2 I don't understand you would use modular gaming boards would be preferable to loose terrain you could place any where you wanted to keep the board different every time..

my modular 8'by 4' table dissagrees with you!msn-wink.gif

in my opinion hills like these look nicer then normal "simple" add on hills, yet due to the fact that i only need 6 tiles in a random game i can always chose to only use 2. by the time i've grown bored of all the possible configurations I most likely will end up making another board anyway.

*for reference, all these tiles are 24" by 24" and the slopes of the hills are made so that they end right in the middle of each tile, making them fully modular with every other tile that has a hill on it

how do you make those slopes or hills. Also what do youu use for the ground texture. I been told easiest is to do the same as your bases. PVA + Sand.

For projects that big, easiest would be to just pour a bag of fine grit sand into a can of appropriately colored latex paint. Hills are usually sculpted with styrofoam. Best stuff to use is wall insulation foam - it's bought from places like Home Depot, Lowes, or Ace, and in giant 8' sheets, usually pink or blue in color.

like wulfbane said, these hills are made from styrofoam. i used a jigsaw to cut out the rough lines, then used sharp knives to make the slopes etc. The board itself is a 6mm MDF plate cut to size. the ground texture was a mixture of paint, PVA glue (to thin the paint, and to better hold the sand) and sand. afterwards i smeared more PVA glue where i wanted my grass to go, which afterwards recieved a minor spray with a grey spraycan to make it look not as bright green.

i think you could even get a frozen tundra look by spraying some white paint over a board like this.

This isn't what I thought people were saying by modular. I thought people were getting at having all the terrain and buildings and barriers glued onto the board. I would definitely incorporate something like this along with the drop pod look on a fenris looking ice world.

well now i'm confused!laugh.png

anyway, i highly recommend making your board similar to mine in it's modularity. you can always make extra hills, buildings, forests etc on seperate bases to allow for a more flexible gaming board. we even leave our craters off the board as to allow buildings to be placed almost everywhere, except on the slopes of the hills
