8vTRH
I'm looking for alternatives to the citadel paints, they seem to be more expensive than they used to be. At the moment my Blood angels are primed and basecoated with gw stuff. I hear that whatever I use it should be watered down (I've honestly never done that, even to gw paint, and I was still satisfied with the end result.) I hear a lot of people promote Vallejo. Just not sure what to do. Thanks! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281581-paint-brand-to-use/ Share on other sites
skawolf
Vallejo, reaper and even craft paints you can find at any craft shops or even Wal-Mart work just fine. I would highly suggest watering down the craft paints though and using several layers. 8vTRH
Great, any tips like what to do or not to on them? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281581-paint-brand-to-use/#findComment-3488677 Share on other sites
Res Ipsa Loquitur
I've always used Army Painter and had no complaints. Their Pure Red matches GW's Blood Red exactly. deathspectersgt7
I thin down alittle with water but other than that good to go I still have a bottle from 13years ago that is still good . skawolf
I thin down alittle with water but other than that good to go I still have a bottle from 13years ago that is still good . I have a Vallejo called German army green (or something like that... the label came off years ago) from 2001 that is still as good as when I got it. Usually paint (especially the old GW line) will get moldy and acquire an awful stench if left that long (or just dry out.. ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281581-paint-brand-to-use/#findComment-3488790 Share on other sites
8vTRH
Yeah mine is all dried out. I see there are similar colors for blood red/evil sunz, baal red/carroburg and mechrite/mephiston red. any past experience with color options for bloodletter glaze, wild rider red, and kindleflame? I would like to try the system gw has. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281581-paint-brand-to-use/#findComment-3488833 Share on other sites

Evil sunz is similar to blood red, but mephiston red is nothing like mechrite red... maybe if you mix a little grey into the mephiston red then it might match mechrite a bit better. Major_Gilbear
I paint with P3 paints, and I simply love them so much that they form 95% of what I use now. For me, they are like a combination of all the best parts of the old, old Citadel paints, and the best parts of the newer paints put out by Citadel, Vallejo and others. They do dry with a slight satin sheen though, but I think pretty much everyone seals their models with matte nowadays anyway, so it's pretty much a non-issue. Â Reaper paints are very nice too, but tricky to get hold of if you're not in the US. Â Finally, I have a lot of Vallejo too. For price vs quality, they fall on a sweet spot that's hard to argue with. Their inks are lovely, and I use them extensively in preference to other manufacturers'. Vallejo's metals are good too, but are really thick and dry quite fast. Adding some water and drying retarder helps them a lot, but you will need at least two good coats to cover then. lhg033
I've always used GW paints though have branched out to use a few Vallejo colours too. in no small part persuaded to try them by this forum but also helped that the shop I started to frequent has them on display next to the GW stuff and it was cheaper for more paint. Â I still have an old pot of (I think it is) festering blue from when I first started painting in the mid 90's that is still perfectly usable. my newer GW paints seem to dry up in the pots after a while. facmanpob
I use Army Painter Dark tone and Strong Tone as replacements for the old Badab Black and Devlan Mud washes, and they are fantastic! Jakbal
I use The Army Painter paints, and I am really happy with them. I water my non-metallic paints down with maybe 15% distilled water ... but I'm not religious about it. Note that I do not like The Army Painter spray primers at all. I don't use them. Kaedes Nex
If you don't thin your paints I recommend Army Painter Warpaints. They are slightly more thinned and watery than Vallejo, which is slightly thinner than Citadel. If you are used to using undiluted Citadel paint, you will be amazed at the flow and properties of Army Painter. P3 are a really nice range to paint with. I much prefer then to Vallejo, which I used for a good 4 years before P3 hit the market. I still use some Vallejo paints, but only from their Model Colour (millitary) range. Their Game Colour range really doesn't agree with me and it has no colours I can't get in other ranges. I also use the odd GW paint as well as the P3 range does not completely match the Citadel range like some other paint ranges do. Â It's odd that you say P3 dry slightly satin for you. For me they dry completely matt, unlike Vallejo which seemed to dry almost gloss and were in need of a matt varnish afterwards. For me they dry completely matt, unlike Vallejo which seemed to dry almost gloss and were in need of a matt varnish afterwards. Â I tend to glaze my colours onto models, and I think that may be why. Although, adding a drop of matte medium to your paints also removes any shine and leaves the paint totally flat. Still, it's a comment I've often seen noted by others as well. Â One comment that I passed on above regarding the Vallejos (and also the newer Citadel paints - as in the ranges since the infamous screw-top lids onwards): they have a very light acrylic binder, and if you thin them a lot, they split completely. Unless you thin them with a lot of matte medium, what I find is that they can easily become a bit "gritty" when you apply them after thinning like this. This affects colours which contain "white" pigments more than other colours (so any whites, off-whites, and pastel shades). I don't think that most people thin their paints that much anyway, but I felt it worth mentioning. Toxichobbit
Yeh, I can confirm that with both Vallejo and older Citadel paints (i've not used the current range yet). When blending i'm mixing my paint down to 50% paint or less and it's resulting in the paint behaving badly on the model, which makes painting very difficult. I find the paint tends to seperate and the pigment clumps together on the model, rather than thinning as a paint should. Vallejo is worse for this than Citadel, but like I said i've not tried blending with the new Citadel yet. I'll get to try soon as my Ultramarine Blue is almost empty and there is no P3 equivalent. I never thin with just water, always with at least a flow improver (W&N) and often with a medium of some kind as well. Â On the other hand, i've heard of people who swear by Vallejo and blend (better than I can) with it. They are having better experiences than me with it, so maybe it just suits their painting style, maybe they're using different mediums that work better with Vallejo or maybe they have different enviromental influences. Aqui
I'll have to get around to trying a couple of P3 and Vallejo paints as there is a stockist in the city centre.
