Making Space Marines look more wolfy

Recommended Posts

So I am thinking about buying this boxset http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1120011a&prodId=prod2160212a

to really kickstart my Ragnar Drop Pod Army...

I really don't want to buy three Grey Hunter box sets in order to mix and match. I'm really thinking about picking up the Ragnar and Grey Hunter metal shoulder pads from GW as well... do you guys think that'll be enough to keep them looking more Space Wolf than generic marines?

Buy one box of greyhunters in addition to that bundle and you will have enough bits to spread them throughout 4 squads.... then you will also have 4 squads grey hunters, which is always a good thing. I would also suggest kit bashing ragnar from the grey hunters' box as the official model is awful.

It is pretty dreadful isn't it?

I have about 3500 pts of Space Wolves already.. I did try the mixing before, but i guess I got a much older box of Tac Marines because they just didn't look right compared to the space wolves. I'll Admit the shoulder pads make a big difference so I am hoping the GH shoulder pads along with the Ragnar shoulder pads will do the trick. I wish there was another modelling company that sold runes and what not.. I guess I could try my creative hand at making them. Either that or like the wolf skulls.. ya know?

You could also buy two SW battleforces and an extra drop pod, will cost a tad more (about £10), but that way you get 4 SW packs, two scout packs and three drop pods for just £10 more compared to your three drop pods and three tactical squads.

There are these from secret weapon, but that's all I'm aware of. They're pretty useful for adding flavour to tac squad components, though.

I second Kvlt Ghost here.

Also if you take a look at the thread he made here:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279874-is-there-a-compilation-of-3rd-party-wolf-bitz-anywhere/

It has quite a few 3rd party bits you can use to wolf up your minis

Thanks for the posts Kvit and Brother Champion

for everyone else.. the 3 missile launchers in the box set are well worth the extra price.

Even more of a reason to go with my advice as you would have the extra bodies to throw those missile launchers on to make more long fangs...... God I love long fangs.

Despite that, 2 packs of scouts versus 3 MLs is the greater bargain.

you'll find you get bored of the tactical squads very quickly (even the new ones!), variety is the name of the game for space wolves me thinks...

I would take my wolf brother's advice on this one, otherwise you're whole army will be standing bracing their legs (squatting), think about all the running legs (assault marines) and walking/striding legs (space wolves) you will be missing out on! I think the legs play a massive part in the look of an army (but if you just want to game, then game on!)

also be aware the old gw space wolfs shoulder pads are a tiny bit smaller than the current plastics, I mean its hardly noticeable, but there is a difference. if you just put one metal pad on, and one plastic, you will notice.... but if you intend to use one metal for each shoulder, it should be ok...

whatever you decide don't forget that space wolves accessory sprue is still available from gw, some really nice bits in there!

if it were me i'd spend my money on forge world, think of the mk2 and mk3 awesomeness!!!

whatever you decide, good luck!

Except I do not use wolf scouts at all currently...

I dunno, like I said, I have a box set of tac marines and I don't really noticed much of a difference in stance from them and the space wolves. But if the shoulder pads are different sizes that presents a big problem for me. How do you guys recommend doing 40 Ragnar Great Company shoulder pads?

I've used those old metal Ragnar shoulder pads, as well as the old metal Grey Hunter pads (both variants) and old metal Blood Claw pads (both variants) on pretty much all of my infantry models. I've also used some of the newer plastic pads that came with the latest Space Wolves pack set of sprues. In my opinion, you won't even notice the slight difference in size. I like using the pads over transfers or freehand painting because you get the extra dimension (i.e. they aren't "flat"). I'll post some relevant pictures so that you can judge for yourself:

Valerian

Those shoulder pad kits have been finecast now as well, Valerian!! *thumbs up*

I just wanted to chime in on this as well. 1 GH kits has enough bits to bring enough wolfyness too at least 3 tac squad kits. You can also sometimes find bit lots online selling extra wolfy goodies.

End of Line

The size difference in the shoulderpads is not that bad. I have a few mixed into my grey hunter squads and once painted up they look great.

Thanks for the reply man. I was hoping they were going to be a good fit to design a Ragnar looking army.

There's an upgrade sprue you can mail order from GW, but it's usually only worth it if you want the fairly specific things that are on there. A pack box is usually a better investment if you want a decent supply of bitz to add to regular tactical squads.
