Wind Dragons WIP

Recommended Posts

I've had this army for a while now (some of you have seen it before), and I think it's been about 3 years (guessing) since I've done any work on it outside of just adding more models.  So a few months ago I started back at it, partly due to the new codex, and partly because my schedule has been freed up enough for me to get over to my LGS on a more regular basis.  Still figuring out the fluff on these guys.

anyway... about a week ago I started picking things up a little in preparation for an apocalypse game my LGS is running.  My plan is to field a battle company along with some support forces.  All told I'm going to be putting somewhere between 5000 - 6000 points on the field, and while I know not all of it's going to get painted  in time, I'd like to get as much of the company portion painted as possible.  So here's a rough idea of what I'll be fielding:

that picture was taken about a week ago, and the empty space in the back center is to be filled by the two devastator squads.  The command squad would be the bikes in the front, being led by the chaplain (the unpainted bike).  I'll have to do a little conversion work for the standard bearer. I'll also be fielding four rhinos and two land raiders (godhammer & redeemer patterns).

I'll post more up-to date pics later.

a bit more recent shot of the tacticals

the 6th squad still needs to be primed, along with the devastators which I'm currently trimming.

and here would be the painted portion of the assault marines; still some detailing to do, but that'll have to wait.

Any chance on individual close ups?

The colour scheme looks great

....mmmmmm, it's a possibility tongue.png

the chapter symbol on that guy is a little altered from what I've been using, which would be this

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/arms.jpg

you'll notice that with the newer one the neck's a little thicker on the wyvern and the wings aren't stylized lightning bolts. Don't know which I'm going to stick with, but I think the newer one will be easier to get a consistent look, especially on the shoulder pads.

also, pic of the fist sergeant from earlier. going to have to touch up his nose, since it now has a black spot on it, apparently from me taking some of the paint off by accident dry.png

those were all pics I had on hand, I'll have to get some better (different angle) ones later this weekend.

played in the afor-mentioned apocalypse game today. These were my forces:

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/apochforcekey_zpsee148f94.jpg

1. stormraven w/ melta, hurricanes, & las
2. chaplain & command squad w/ 2 meltaguns, power weapon, & standard
3. two typhoon/heavy bolter speeders (fielded as single speeder units)
4. captain and libby
5. five melta/flamer speeders (fielded as single speeder units)
6. assault cannon/missile dread, ironclad w/ assault launchers, and default dred
7. assault terminators w/ landraider transport
8. tactical terminators w/ assault cannon & redeemer transport
9. bike squad, w/ 2 meltagun, & multimelta
10. whirlwind (fielded as a rhino)
11. two tri-las & a dakka pred, (assassin squadron)
12. first devestator squad w/ flak missiles
13. second devestator squad w/ flak missiles
14. six tactical squads w/ 6 meltaguns, 4 w/multimelta, a las, a heavy bolter,
four power fists, & two power weapons
15. fist assault marine squad
16. second assault marine squad
17. four rhinos
18. vindicator
19. sniper scout squad w/ cloaks and missile launcher
NOT PICTURED: jump chaplain & tech marine
so I had about 6,000 points hitting the field for this.
we only got through two turns, but it ended up being about 25,000 points on each side. One of the players on my side brought about 15k points of guard, including a couple stormlords and a half-dozen (guessing) macharius vulcans, among other things. The battle company (using imperial fist chapter tactics) held up fairly well, considering. I also discovered just how tough stompa's are, and just how handy melta's are for taking them out msn-wink.gif
Battle report coming later, I'll edit this post with a link when I get it up.

so with the excitement over it's time to get back to other things.  I've slowly been progressing past ye old table top standard, on things.  It is on that note that I present my latest endeavors in taking the marines beyond the basic, and possibly even giving them some character.

that last image is a little blurry, so I'd call interest to the target screen.  He obviously needs a little touching up (and squad markings), and the high-lighting isn't finished, but I think it's enough to get the idea.

I hope I won't offend you if I offer some painting suggestions? I really like your color scheme- if you want to make things a little crisper, but are still looking for a fast process, try this:

Paint the black areas a dark gray instead, the darker you go, the closer it will be to black in the end, *but* you don't want to go too dark or you will miss the highlights.

Then, wash the whole figure with black ink, watered down just a bit. You will probably need to experiment a little to find the right mix. You could also try one of the "dip" products from Army Painter. The black will go into all the recesses, leaving you with dark gray on the edges and raised smooth surfaces.

This should give you a better results that the dry brushing you are doing now.

Then, carefully paint your blue over that just, like you do with the black now. Add a wash of thinned down blue ink to the eagle and other complex areas (don't need it so much on the shoulder edging, but you can) and you should be happy with the results.

Adding a wash is a great way to "add detail" with the mini actually doing all the work :-)

Send me a PM with your address and I will do one up for you to use as an example.

Cheers!

@geektom: I'll have to try the ink some time. The dry brushing is still an experimental thing for me, as I didn't really do it that much until about a year ago with my Skaven. What I did with them was to paint a watered down black over them (paint, not ink). Looking at the rats, they still need some highlighting, but that's going on a tangent that doesn't belong here.

@Jaspcat: there's more assaulty goodness to come, but I got to get stuff primed first. I also got to figure out what I'm doing with the storm raven pilot. If things cooperate, I'll be changing out his shoulder pads (from GK to tech-marine).

so I decided I needed a change of pace and did some work on these guys instead.

those pictures are shortly after a coat of highly watered down black.  Those five also have a "little" extra glue on them due to a conversion I had on them a while back.  Got rid of it after I decided it didn't really fit with the chapter. Point being that part of the shine is from the glue as well as the wet paint.

some of the tacticals I got were already on urban bases, so I think I'm going to run with that.  The two models I had based before then were these guys.

yes that's green liquid (I would say water, but for all we know it's liquified orks).

  • 2 weeks later...

terminators after a little hiatus, followed by a little highlighting

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4801_zpsab3ac6a3.jpg

now it's at this point I think I ought mention the first vehicle I ever got for this army was a whirlwind, which entered the chapter's armoury a little over two weeks after I got my first marines in mid-2006.  It was the ONLY tank in my army for almost two years.  It has served with distinction in it's time, including my first 40k tournament.  So has it done, and so shall it be marked.

still in progress but you get the idea, and here's the top of the turret:

I did the other side of the turret, and now doing a little work on the doors.  I decided to go with one of my less "muddied" chassis for the whirlwind, since I thought it fit better for what I'm doing with it. Anyway, the work so far...

...and now the serpent has arms (and got moved to the left side of the chassis)

...and now he has clouds with a little lightning.
