Howdy all

I've started doing reviews of the Horus Heresy books, i've got the first 17 and an overall look at the series up on my blog.

http://vom-krieg.blogspot.co.nz/p/blog-page.html

It's not a normal, recap style review though. More of my thoughts and impressions of the overall works, what i loved, and what ticked me off.

Feel free to pop along and peruse.

Cheers.

I read the overview article, and thought the intent was 'come check my blog and discuss the heresy' which is exactly where I am at mentally with the series, but wanted to have a large overview thread here. :D

If that IS what your after, sign me up!

OK. I am not going to spoiler tag, sorry folks, but its time to discuss where we are. Should be noted...I really dont know all that I want to know, and hence this is far shorter than I thought...plus I am hungry.

So we know the overall arc of the Heresy.

1. Terra unites under the Big E.

2. Slaanesh is born, and the Warp Storms surrounding terra are blown out.

3. Big E gets his boys in gear, but they are lost (or are they) and off they go throughout the warp.

4. Crusading happens.

5. Various plot points (most coming from Index Astartes in the past, Nostramo, Ghenna)

6. Heresy!

7. Various plot points (most coming from Index Astartes in the past, Signus Prime, Prospero, )

8. Siege of Terra

9. Various plot points (Angel vs the Bloodthirster, World Eaters at the Gate, Khârn falls, but lives on.)

10. Emperor vs Horus.

I think at the highest level, thats about it from a traditional heresy point of view.

For the NEW Heresy, well you need Wikipedia for a full list of content now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horus_Heresy (its got some errors though, Prince of Crows was never Audio, was it?)

The story is the same, but the players have shifted ever so slightly, and some of the plot points HAVE changed.

The Angel beat the Bloodthrirster in Round 2 on Signus. (Ruins the fight at the Gate imo, but hey, I'm not paid to write.)

Corax was successful, and could have rebuilt a legion better than the Emperor could (golly gee man, seriously)

Ultramarines built an Empire, and COULD have stood as its own force.

What I really want to know now though is, where are we going with the new HH (nHH)?

Where are all the Legions as of the end of Unremembered Empire, and the current release of the Scars set?

Where are the Legions going from there? The Ruinstorm is in full effect, but...where are Lorgar and Angron heading next?

Do we know what the next mini arc is?

Know no Fear and all the content up to Unremembered Empire seems to be mostly wrapped at this point?

CLEARLY the Horus Heresy was in no way inspired by "Paradise Lost".

It's obviously an allegory for post modernism, with Horus as critic utilizing the death of the author approach to engage the Imperium his Father created as art and deriving meaning from it solely based on his own engagement with the work, independent of the intention of the Creator in making the work.

Comparing HH with single other mythology, how convenient and completely misses the whole point of HH. I'll skip that too, one of the worst ideas you could use in review.

What is "the point" of the Horus Heresy?

I'm just curious what your view on that is.

That's awesome.

I always saw the Horus Heresy as a mirror of the Roman Empire's transformation from the Roman pantheon to Christianity.  How Christians were at one time burned and gutted in the arenas to eventually becoming the state religion of the Roman Empire in the same way that the Imperium had an intense ban on religion, followed the realization that people need religion even out in the depths of space, both for their own sanity and as a defense against the horrors of the warp.

Nice comparison and it actually blends with the war in heaven. One is what happens to the people and the imperium itself, the other is what is going on "amongst the angels"

The Goose that laid the Golden Egg isn't the Horus Heresy books, its the models. In the age of ePirates the books aren't that hard to come by so people will have all the rules they want, but nothing to do with them. It isn't a bad business plan to release the White Scars rules in book 6 and then in book 7 about Tallarn or something release rules for Iron Warriors armored companies, Imperial Army tank prototypes, etc. People will buy the books AND the models, or some people will just buy the models. The amount of people who buy a Leman Russ variant will exceed the people who buy the book by multiple orders of magnitude.

Fulgrim review up, thats 5 now. http://vom-krieg.blogspot.co.nz/p/blog-page.html

Like it. In the Galaxy in Flames one, is that a deliberate typo in the author's name? tongue.png

It was a typo, but after it was pointed out I decided not to change it as its 100 times funnier that way

7th post up, legion. http://vom-krieg.blogspot.co.nz/2014/02/legion-horus-heresy-book-review.html

I've also started doing an ongoing rating system for the books. As of this post, Legion is number 1.

Next up, a book that will be hard pressed to finish anywhere other than last, Battle for the abscess.
