Vomkrieg, I appreciate this. I got to read a couple of interesting things and look forward to when you hit Vengeful Spirit. Because that one now gives me a headache whenever I think of it.

Ha, my friend said much the same thing. I'm curious to get to that book now. Still, musn't read ahead again. I read betrayer before first heretic, which was silly of me.

Another great review!  However, I'm worried that as the series progresses, the novels seem to be more and more reliant on short stories and novellas to fill in gaps and build characterization, rather than the novel itself.  Vengeful Spirit is particularly guilty of this and I would not recommend Scars nearly as highly without having read Brotherhood of the Storm first.  Do you have any plans to read the "supplemental" material as well?

Only the stuff in the short story/novella compilations like "Tales of Heresy", I'm not one to track down rare things. If i can't get it on book depository for about $10NZ a book, i'm not that fussed :)

You hated Battle for the Abyss, so that's good. You did not hate Nemesis or Fulgrim, so that's bad.

Nemesis and Fulgrim have there issues, but, yeah I wouldn't say I hate them at all. The thing about reviews, is they are just one dudes opinion

But BFTA was so terribad I couldn't help myself from going guns in.  I honestly hope that there isn't a book worse than that in the series.

Ah, well everything should end up in an anthology eventually, though I think more of the timing involved in their release. I expect a lot of "Well THAT would've been nice to know three books ago!" in your future.

So what irked you most about nemesis?

Long story short:

The nigh unkillable Mary Sue Black Pariah and his awful cookie-cutter back story (he was born bad, so he's bad), and the completely ineffective Assassins. Their final stand was the author stabbing you in the back for going through the effort of reading the rest of that drivel up to that point.

Spear was the weak point of the book for me as well. Described well enough, but motivation and backstory was weak. I thought the assassins were done as very competent asides from vs Spear though.

Loving your reviews and glad to see TFH at the top of the list where it belongs.  That said, one little niggle.

it is strongly hinted that many of the surviving Astartes from the fallen legions were absorbed by the Ultramarines.
It is actually not "strongly hinted" at all.  In fact, the 40k community has a very nasty habit of reading phrases like, "It is rumored that..."  as "It is 100% true that...".  This particular bit, got so bad that ADB had to address it directly as not being anything more than two Word Bearers making up lies about a legion they hate.

interesting, When did ADB mention this was just Xaphen and co talking out of their heads. Pretty curious now.

This was awhile back in one of the "What happened to the Missing Legions?" threads.  The issue was people were no longer taking the Ultramarine absorption as a rumor, but as an absolute fact, when the reality is just that Gulliman is just seriously good at logistics and growing/managing a legion that big.  Not to say it isn't impossible, just that two random Word Bearers shooting the breeze about Ultramarines isn't exactly what would be called a bastion of truth.  I'll see what I can find.

I could totally see Gulliman just being that good at organization (helps to have a really stable gene seed too). Sort of how Luther helped the Dark Angels number expand rapidly in Fallen Angels, but probably more so.

That said, i could also see Gulliman being the one trusted to look after soldiers from a lost legion.

It's an interesting concept all round.
