skawolf
When using a press mold made from greenstuff what should I use as a releasing agent? Would gun oil work? or should I go out and buy something specific? I used dish soap when making the mold, it didn't work out that great Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281807-releasing-agent/ Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
I usually use olive oil. Anything greasy that you can easily wash off should do the trick though. Res Ipsa Loquitur
Yeah, olive oil. For some reason, the cheaper it is the better it works. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281807-releasing-agent/#findComment-3493286 Share on other sites
Marshal Rohr
Switch to legit mold release, better results, even from an epoxy mold. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281807-releasing-agent/#findComment-3493320 Share on other sites
skawolf
Remington REM oil with teflon (I use the bottle as I find it better for my AR's lower, but i'm sure the spray works as well) works fantastically as a release agent BTW Just made 5 stormshields (shhhh.... don't tell anyone ) and they turned out great. Edit: I made 4 stormshields, I have 5 including the original... Major_Gilbear
I use olive oil too, but I have used chapsticks as well - these are better if you don't want to get grease absolutely everywhere! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281807-releasing-agent/#findComment-3494428 Share on other sites
skawolf
haha, I never thought of using chapstick. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/281807-releasing-agent/#findComment-3494909 Share on other sites
Seleucus
I simply use vaseline. I wipe a finger with a fine coating of vaseline over the soft GS before pushing it into the mould. I would always put the releasing agent, whatever you use, on the soft GS, not into the mould as it is less likely to pool into the recesses of the mould, and, therefore, less likely to reduce the detail on the moulding. This is also the case when making a mould from the original object - put the releasing agent on the GS not the object.
