sal of manders
so my LGS hosted an apocalypse game recently, and I hit the field with about 6k of space marines. I know, I know, not as much as the collections of others on this site (I'm assuming), but certainly not paltry either. Not the best paced, since we started at 11:00am and (after setup) still barely got through 2 turns by about 7:00pm. So with that said, I give you my epic tale (because apocalypse games are automatically epic). THE ARMIES: we ended up with 8 players, with roughly 25k to 27k per side between us. Our side consisted of my roughly 6,000pts space marines (fist & iron hands), player 2's estimated 15,000pts of imperial guard, a great deal of which didn't actually get deployed due to time (we only got through two turns). our third player's roughly 2500-3000 pts of necrons, and our late fourth player, who arrived late with about 2500-3000pts of dark eldar opposite us, was a strange alliance of eldar, tau, sisters of battle, greyknights imperial guard (in the form of baneblades), chaos marines, loyalist marines, and orks. sooooo.... pretty much everybody but dark eldar and demons. SCENARIO: "final assault" our side is defender, giving us a 24" deployment zone, and first deployment while our opponent (12" deployment) gets to go first. the board is spread across two tables, and we've ruled that the space between them is a chasm of impassable terrain (roughly 24", because that's how far the table are form each other). DEPLOYMENT: tanks.... http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4748_zps9e0e3fad.jpg ...our IG player has them. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4736_zpsdfe72ead.jpg my battle company, along with my librarian get deployed at the right edge of the long table (technically middle of the field), with the scouts and assault units in a forward position, on the off-chance they survive the impending onslaught of our opponents first turn. Everything is combat squaded. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4739_zps743549bc.jpg my devs take defensive positions, with one squad and part of a tactical squad camping one of our objective inside a ruin, that ruin having had its defenses bolstered by my techmarine. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4745_zpsa4e06f49.jpg our necrons "allies" (meh, it's apocalypse) hold the far left flank. I've set my vindicator with them for some added fire power, since that side is a little lacking compared to the rest. I cede him control of that vehicle for the rest of the game, as it's about 10 feet from ANY of my other units. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4741_zps995d8035.jpg In reserve we have our dark eldar player's entire force, my speeders (5 HF/MM & 2 typhoon/bolters), my pred's, my other terminator squad in the redeemer, my stormraven, the IG players thunderhawk, and about 4000pts of IG infantry. We face, among other things... the green tide (more like the grey tide), which camps one of the objectives. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4746_zps65a1101f.jpg More importantly, we also face two stompas, 2 bane blades, and a warhound titan. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4738_zps77617048.jpg http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4737_zps7ee5f632.jpg ****************** TURN 1! part 1 ****************** The two stompa's advance... stomp, stomp, stomp..... meanwhile.... http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4750_zpsd08cdf69.jpg the battle company weathers the hail of fire, with the command squad and assault marines taking heavy losses. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4751_zpsde283d2b.jpg a few ork bikers attempt to make a name for themselves assaulting my chaplain, while acro-flagelents clash with the nearby tacticals. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4749_zps261ee3a8.jpg the warhound inflicts heavy damage on the bane blades at the short table, but not enough to destroy any of them. ****************** TURN 1 part 2; score tied ****************** the acro flagelents are mostly gunned done after smashing through my tactical squad, and my bike chaplain stalemates with the remaining ork bikers. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4754_zpsefc6376e.jpg a tactical squad and dreadnaught drop a squad of grey knight marines down to two, while my iron clad meltas a nearby vindicator. Further over, my chaplain engages with a wraith lord, holding it in combat. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4755_zps5d80ef53.jpg One of the stompa's loses a hull point, but otherwise the two behemoths are no worse for wear. ******************* Turn 2 part 1; score still tied ******************* An unatural disaster occurs in the form of a virus bomb, the green tide losing almost half its number. 6 battle brothers succumb to the virus, from various squads. It is at about this point that our necron player has to leave, but in a twist of fate many of the grey knights on the opposing side leave as well. The guy who was officiating was running them, and so pulled out his forces to keep the teams even. We reasoned the grey knights were in pursuit of the now departed necrons for whatever reasons. Nonetheless, the situation began to get desperate as enemy reinforcements arrived. callidus assassins arrived, and and two terminator squads threatened to annihilate the tactical squad camping one of the objectives. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4758_zpsdb28c385.jpg nob bikers advanced on another, under defended objective http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4760_zps377f8dc8.jpg fire dragons come into range of one of our macharius tanks to destroy it http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4759_zpsfe6e62cd.jpg meanwhile one of the stompas hit's home on a stormlord http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4764_zpse3b103e7.jpg the declining time factor has rendered our the far left flank irrlevant. ******************************************************** turn 2, part 2 *endgame* *********************************************** reinforcements arrive, and all efforts focus on either securing objectives, or bringing down the super heavies. the marines on the right flank turn to focus fire on the damaged stompa. They inflict heavy damage, knocking off 8 hull points hull points (reducing it to 3), and prepare to assault it in a combat which, unfortunately, does not occur due to time. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4766_zps98872716.jpg meanwhile marines and dark eldar arrive in an attempt to push the biker knobs from the objective they've usurped. The ensuing orbital strike from the complany strike crusier is unsuccessful in eliminating what's left (pesky scatter). http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4767_zpsa69ba4e5.jpg drop troops arrive to reduce the green tide to a warboss http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4769_zps96c7d76b.jpg more drop troops arrive to destory the baneblade and warhound on the short table, while the predators, typhoon speeders and stormraven arrive to dislodge the landraider and fire warriors from the nearby objective. http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_4770_zpscbe09dad.jpg we didn't even finish the shooting phase for our turn before we had to call things for time. Our IG players heavy weapons teams weren't even deployed, as we'd determined they wouldn't really be able to do anything in the time frame we had. We didn't use the strategic asset cards this game, nor a lot of the other special rules, like mysterious objectives, due to time constraints (I still got the orbital bombardment since it was part of the formation, and we WERE using formations for this game). I've obviously left a good bit out, but I've tried to hit the highlights. Amusingly, all my characters survived for the time we played, with one of the chaplains taking a wound, and the other surviving a stalemated combat with a wraithlord for two rounds. I probably would have dropped the orbital strike on turn one, but my captain was in the open at the time due to the screening rhino getting destroyed (not a good place to be in an apoch game, obviously). A number of the baneblades and macharius vulcans got destroyed turn 2, along with a good portion of my devastators and assault squads. The tacticals came out quite well, although they probably wouldn't have been there much longer considering most of them were right next to two stompas full of boyz. The dreadnaughts all survived unscathed, the iron clad doing so much to the chagrin of my opponents. The command squad was obliterated, aside from the chaplain himself (didn't have an apothecary due to wysiwyg, which would have probably made a difference). all in all a great game, although I had several units in range to assault their damaged stompa. Would've been a long shot, due to the distance, but conceivably it would've been 5 assault terminators with hammers and an iron clad joining two vet sergeants with power fists. sal of manders
It's hard to catch the scope of a huge battle like this. good job! thanks, I know pictures help tremendously. also, when a player on each size has about twice as much as you do, it gives a lot of time for pictures while they shoot each other ;) that same fact also bogged things down a bit, since multiple people would be attacking the same person at the same time.
