how to explain the horus heresy and hobby

Suggested next two purchases: painting tray and spot lamp.

Spraying gets done elsewhere, but then you can sit next with her whilst she watches bad TV and you paint the details yes.gif

Hint, don't try and watch anything you want as she switch to, 'I don't know how you can watch TV and paint at the some time. Why do we have to watch this rubbish etc.'

Unfortunately I get this a LOT haha - however I have the benefit? of the missus being artistically minded anyway and an apprentice tattooist, so I'm slowly getting her there (plus she likes Tyranids...)

I'd agree with the sentiments of slowly, slowly and make it feel more artistic/detailed than your normal (much as I love them) Star Trek/Wars geek-meet - after all many of the folks on here really do make artwork :)

Well she saw my first ever mini and one I finished last night and she was impressed, I even am allowed to have my poster of angron framed and on my office wall so I'm winning slowly.

I was thinking maybe secretly purchasing some SoB and painting a small force for her work desk... Maybe st Celestine and retuine or convert a inquisition retuine

Well it worked for my dad haha - me mum got bored of making sandwiches/brews, bought some sisters (black armour, red lining and tentacle pink/ice blue lipstick) it started as 10 SoB and now it's 2 excorsists, 40+ 'regular' SoB and 20 jump pack ones :)

Anyways haha - good luck chap :D if you're ever this side of the pond and not chilling with Brother Argos hit me up :D I'm in london same as him :)

Fantasy football is just dungeons & dragons for jocks devil.gif

Sure, 30K/40K is sci-fi fantasy. It is an ever-changing video game that you can touch and actually get involved with: building, painting, wargaming... physical and mental skills! Heck, you stand around a game table and plop figures around rather than sit on a comfy couch and press buttons. And backstory, well every media has backstory. Name a television series, movie franchise, book series, etc that doesn't.

It's Greek tragedy with gene-spliced demigods. It's Shakespeare, only the Old Globe Theatre is in space! With lascannons and void shields...

It's a creative and rewarding hobby. The fan base is a fun and stimulating brotherhood of a community.

That's generally my stance when talking about the hobby to scientia phantasia novitii.

Read: Geek tragedy :P hahaha

Im not your stereotypical nerd that smells like he hangs out in Nurgle's garden (You know who that kid is at the FLG)

I am a frat boy ex jock who thinks he is narcissis - but what frat boy isn't?

After bringing the ladies (and I use that term loosely, I'm in college) back for a night of fun I commonly find them looking at my models and thinking they are cute and artistic and that I'm not a complete posterboy for a future CEO/dreg of society.

Handsome. Athletic. Hold liquor like a demigod. And go pew pew with my models.

I am the new Renaissance man cool.png

I feel old with you folks talking about college haha - anyway, as others have said we're a)not all the stereotypical 'nerds/geeks/neeks' of society and b)there's a LOT more to the hobby than buying (in the words of the missus) expensive bits of plastic - apart from the fact I've now convinced her to draw up a space marine design for a tattoo :) then I'll get her boss/teacher to do it :) (also shameless plug if you're in london UK and want realistic/detailed work look up Endre Szabo @ tattooend) hehe - hope all goes well and have fun in japan :)

Yeah that is funny about non-stereotypical geekiness, haha.  I'm the same, but like Russ Brother college was a long time ago.

I was in a fraternity, cared more about booze and girls than just about anything else.  Back then I was on 40k hiatus.  I was into the hobby in junior high and then came back into it during grad school.  In between I dedicated my painting and modeling penchant towards making 56 beer beer bongs, a house-owned hooptie car (complete with two kegs in the trunk and hoses leading to the back seat....it got totaled when it got hit by a drunk driver.  Das ist irony), and other partyrific accoutrements.  Those were some fun years.

But what was also really cool was rediscovering 40K, which for me was just after or around 3rd edition came out.  Seeing how it had developed, discovering new races like the Tau, Dark Eldar, and the Necrons was fun (even though the latter had been around earlier), and buying plastic again was immensely rewarding.

I think, if anything, these revelations of ours go to show that there are all kinds of people in this hobby, which also means that introducing it to others will never be a one-size-fits-all type of thing.

Its too bad you cant do booze, women, and modeling at the same time or I would get nothing done :D

They do need to make beerhammer official fo real.

JUST GOT FIRST BLOOD!! TIME TO BEER BONG PLEDGE!!!

Seriously though. Hazing is not acceptable. Unless you do it to pledges, because they aren't people. XD

Thank god us brits don't do hazing xD I spent enough college time under one influence or another - hazing would've meant I'd never leave my home haha

You could also roll with the inclined similarities between japanese culture/anime and 40/30k if she's into that :)

You could also roll with the inclined similarities between japanese culture/anime and 40/30k...

"Help me B & C, you are my only hope! My boat is taking on water and sinking fast!"

"You should drill some holes in the botton so the water drains out!"

:p

Jaspcat,

Me personally I would show her pictures of all the different models and races and see what she actually thinks is "cool" looking. My wife hates Tyranids (the bug aspect creeps her out) but she does love Daemons and the New DA models. She's fairly artistic so I give her a few of the guys and honestly she practically does all my detail work anymore (this took three years mind you). Lastly for the Horus Heresy stuff you have to find what areas interest her. My wife loves history so I compare it to that a lot to the point now she's got half the primarchs down. She roles her eyes at me half the time but she stated it herself. Everyone needs their own hobby and thing to do. She also has slowly gotten into her own bits and pieces. When I explain to her friends or someone in passing I just call it very very complicated chess with an awesome storyline to go with it. I do explain the three elements that have been brought up as well. I say some like to collect to paint, others to play and others for the fluff portion. Me personally I like the play and fluff more than anything. My painting will always suck (I don't put massive effort in but I don't look like I do it all with my feet either). Keep showing her models as they get completed and don't get too complicated with the explanations. Biggest thing I've found for anything is explaining massively indepth about something they really aren't interested in will lose wives or anyone really almost immediately. Relate and keep it short feed it to her in small portions and find out what she likes and play on that. So in short be devious and act like Slaanesh I guess.
