Pariah - No one expects ... the Alpha Legion?!

Abnett really is fascinated with the whole "I am Alpharius" thing, huh? /sigh

Idk, I don't see it as such a bad thing, he writes Alpha Legion stuff really well. That whole scene was quite artfully done. The real beauty of the AL is when you set it up so well that all it takes is that single statement to blow your readers' minds through the roof. I really enjoy having this crazy nefarious 'wheels within wheels' approach to the legion. I love the Legions' insanely convoluted and fractious nature.

Not to mention writing the Ecclesiarchy getting into bed with the Word Bearers? Wow wee wow that was awesome. Thank god for actually developing the characters of the bad guys!

Right? The Word Bearers chasing for a key to the effective usage of Enuncia was perfect. So many cool plot threads, I can't wait for the next one in the series.

It's obviously too late for me but I advise you to wait until the trilogy is finished. Unfinished series are so frustrating, especially if you are already waiting for other series to continue: Gaunt's Ghosts, Ciaphas Cain, Dresden Files etc.

I get what you mean, Quixus. Getting into a good series that's been finished can be a treat, as you can knock the whole thing out in one go.

But Kol's got the right idea. Besides, when you're a voracious reader like me, having multiple series that you're into can be more fun. By the time you finish a book of one series, another book has been added to another series. Juggle enough of them, and you're never out of new reading material.

Unfortunately for me, as a skim reader by nature, I need a lot of series to have that happen, and sadly having authors like George R. R. Martin on that list means I can never juggle enough. But skim reading does, admittedly, mean that I miss things when I read through, which has the positive side effect of increases re-reading value. So whenever I hit a rut with nothing new, I got plenty to re-read to keep things fresh in my mind.

I do the same thing Cormac. I'm on my second re-read of the Gaunt's Ghosts series right now and I think I've read the Night Lords trilogy at least 3 times now. I love waiting for all the details on a series to go fuzzy, then re-reading it and realizing I had forgotten so much awesome stuff. It's getting to that point where I think I might have to pick up Horus Rising again after I finish the Ghosts series.

Anticipation in the wait builds suspense. Besides, the best story is the one that never ends.

While anticipation does build suspense, a story that does not end because it does not continue is not the same as an unending story.

Don't recall saying they were msn-wink.gif

ha ur all mentioning things going fuzzy and re-reading, building suspense etc; i had completely forgotten this scene in the book. reading the thread has brought back the memory, somewhat similar to others (going bolt up-right with a giant smirk on my face - like.. "ohhh you rascal")

All I know is that when the 'Warblind' (epic name there, too. Abnett's the :cuss ing man.) said, "I am Alpharius", I threw my book down, pointed at it, looked at my wife and said, "Holy :cuss ing :cuss, that did not just happen! Wait, who's he working for? Who's playing who?!? Arrrrrgh!"

I was able to talk her into not dialing psychiatric help a few minutes later.

Heathens, what'd we tell you about using chloroform? :P

Kidding.

But yeah, it was a complete and total blindside. Heck, I remember Excessus ranting and raving about it and here I am, expecting an Alpharius reference to pop up somewhere and then BAM! my jaw hit the floor.

What I love is that Abnett made it feel natural. I was shocked, yes; I kinda lost my mind for a moment. But, it was well done, and artfully placed. Plus, if I have faith in anybody to write about the AL, it's Dan.

I'm really looking forward to more interaction between the AL operator and Eisenhorn. I would love to know who working for who, and how the hell they met in the first place.

Skim reader here as well. I have read the Eisenhorn trilogy a good ten times, and still go back, read it and discover new details that I failed to pick up on/forgot about. It's a real joy, especially with an author like Abnett.
