Pariah - No one expects ... the Alpha Legion?!

I think everyone is missing the real question...

When the Hell is Penitent coming out??!!!!

Roughly around the release of Half-Life 3.

Warmaster has been pushed back - so I'm guessing everything else in that timeframe will be.

Probably around the time of Inteceptor City!

Such pessimism :P

Anyway, I'm still reading the book for the first time (2/3 of the way through) and I am loving all of the revelations. My heart soared when I recognised old Eisenhorn in the church. And Nayl too (love that character).

Also, was Sister Tharpe a disguised Patience Kys? If so, her apparent (because it hasn't been fully confirmed) death saddens me. A great character too.

Well, I have finally finished the book. My anticipation for Penitent is sky-high: Alpha Legion allied with Eisenhorn is, as mentioned above, mind-blowing and damn excellent. The confrontation between Thorn and Talon will be damn interesting too, though I am sad to see that Kara and Patience (aka Tharpe) will be on the wrong end of Nayl and Medea (or should I say Bismillah?)...

I have a sudden urge to re-read the whole Eisenhorn trilogy again, just because I nerd-love that Inquisitor and his band so, so much*

*Ravenor is good, but I just don't like him as much as Eisenhorn, even in Pariah where the latter is supposed to be a bad guy... *sigh*

@Ludovic: I know what you mean about the bit in the church, brought a little tear to my eye that. The way Abnett writes about characters we know and love through the eyes of someone who does not know them is pure class. I'd recommend the E short Perihelion. Its only tiny but worth it for the bit where we discover the reason for Ravenors retirement from active service (what a choice, that almost had me weeping too...)

OK the next big Question lads.....

Thorn or Talon?

I'm going to have to throw my lot in with Eisenhorn. As if being in cahoots with the Alpha Legion wasn't cool enough on its own, I just like kicking it old school. My man Gregor practically wrote the book on the tragic hero. His slow descent into radicalism was operatic and I still believe that what he does is for the good of Humanity. Go Thorn!

I love them both and can't decide. I'll probably do what The Lion did and wait to see who wins before declaring my alligence to the victor...

Despite his somewhat heretical tendencies, Eisenhorn is the one I'm cheering for in this fight!

OK the next big Question lads.....

Thorn or Talon?

Yes. the question is about as pointless as asking who would win: Harlon Niall or MkVenner? [OT]Is MkVenner's first name ever mentioned?[/OT]

I'll roll with anyone who has an Alpha Legion operator on his payroll.

But has he? Or is Eisenhorn on the payroll/leash of the Alpha Legion? Does he even know his associate's allegiance? Did Deathrow tell the truth? Can't wait to find out.

I got Pariah when it first came out, and had just finished reading through both the Eisenhorn and Ravenor Trilogies. At first I found it hard to get into, and I found it all a bit predictable, and then Deathrow said what he said. I never thought for a second he was an Alpha Legionnaire. I hope Dan gets to write another HH Alpha Legion book.

Just finished the book.

Here's my question:

Sicarus and the Planet of Sorcerers are listed as two of the place's where the Emperor's True Name might be found.

That's the daemon world of the Word Bearers and the Thousand Sons, both of whom know just a thing or five about sorcery.

One would think if Lorgar, Erebus, Magnus, Ahriman, et al had their collective claws on something as ritually potent as the True Name of the Emperor, they'd have made use of it at some point during the 10, 000 years they've spent sulking about how the Heresy turned out.

Also:

Thorn, always and forever. Talon blundered through three books without realizing his second in command was possesed by a Greater Daemon.

Both Legions also believe the Emperor to be as dead as Horus. So from they're perspective, they'd just be killing the dead.

I thought it the possession happened in the second book and it was just drug use with daemon-crack in the first?

IIRC the possession happens at the end of the second book.

The name could only be accessible to Magnus and Lorgar, who aren't bothered with the material realm anymore and don't trust their sons with it. Or the full name could be scattered throughout hundreds or thousands of different books and scrolls, but all of the books and scrolls needed are located on those planets.

I admit when I read it I also wondered why it had never been used, if it was already in the hands of two of the big bads.

God just finished this book last night, when I read that line I sat bolt upright in bed and scared my wife awake. She asked me what was wrong and I turned to her and said, "Alpha Legion! Out of :cussing nowhere! Amazing!" to which she said 'whoopdy-do' and passed back out.

I freaking love Abnett, the twists he throws in blow my mind, time and time again. I'm really looking forward to seeing where he goes with this arc. Not to mention Deathrow was an awesome freaking character, as is the whole concept of 'the warblind.'

Pretty much had the exact same reaction, but it also happened on the very last page with the reveal of a very familiar Daemonhost msn-wink.gif

EDIT:

OK the next big Question lads.....

Thorn or Talon?

Rose Thorn, abundant, by flamelight crescent.

Some disappointing news from someone on Warseer; they asked Dan Abnett at the Weekender about when Penitent is likely to be released. He said that he has got Warmaster, Anakanwar (sp?) and a Horus Heresy novel to do first, so we're looking at around 3 years.
