Unboxing the Centurions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I finally managed to get myself a box of centurions. I don’t
normally jump of the band wagon for new models but these are too impressive to
ignore.

For those of you who are thinking about buying some but want
to look at the sprues and construction method first, I thought I’d put together
a small review and comments piece. Of course there is nothing from stopping you
from checking out the sprues on the GW site.

The first thing I noticed, that is different from most other
box sets, is that each centurion comes on its own sprue and 1 sprue contains
ALL off the options. It’s nice not to have to scan through 3 different sprues
just to find the legs arms and body. With the current quality level of GW
plastics this isn’t really a huge surprise.

Just a small point, but worth noting is that the image on
the box is the mirrored version of what you actually get. This is not a gripe
or a moan about quality but I know that some people use the box as a part
reference rather than look at the instructions.

The models go together really nicely and with little fuss.
All of the arms come as a pair with matching icons on each fist but there is
nothing to prevent you from mixing up the arms to get different poses. There
are actuators on the back of each of the arms that link on to the body meaning
there are only so many poses you can get from the arms before you need to take
a pair of clippers to them

The legs are fairly static and don’t leave a lot of room for
imagination or scenic bases, it would have been nice to have the option of
adding more movement to the models, especially the assault versions. The feet are
a ball and socket design, like the dreadnought but they have a little tag at
the back to allow for correct foot positioning. Again, if you want your guys
standing on rocks or debris then you can easily cut these out.

The shoulder pads are held in place by a single point and
could break off easily if dropped or treated roughly.

The only thing that lets these models down is the heads. The
bare heads just look too small and silly and the helmeted heads are meant to be
a cross between the MK7 PA helmet and the termy helmet but they just look odd.
I don’t know why they didn’t use the existing Mk5 PA helmet as a hybrid.

You know what does work well?......Grey knight termy
helmets. They have the bulk and armour plates to blend with the suit design.

Looking at the sprue, it seemed a bit odd to make the weapon
barrels in 2 halves but then I dawned on me that by doing it that way the
barrels are already “pre-drilled”. Score 1 for the designers.

Along with all the heavy weapons, you also get 2 flamers and
2 meltaguns for the assault versions. What is useful about this is that, if you
don’t use them on the centurions, you can use them elsewhere in your army
because they don’t have any extra tubes, pipes or anything covering up the “handle“
area.

*Sorry this doesn't have photo's yet, I'll finish it off tomorrow.

Each sprue contains all weapons, but weapons on one sprue can belong to arms on another sprue. In order to properly connect with all attachment points once mounted, arms and weapons need to be matched as listed in the manual, and they don't always coexist.

Also, one of the sprues contains 3 heavy bolters if I remember right, and another contains only 1.

It's important for this kit to pay attention to part numbers or you'll have problems matching arms, cables and weapons.

You may also want to delete most of your manually-inserted line endings and leave it to our browser windows to decide where to wrap smile.png

I like it, it looks like a poem! laugh.png

Thoroughly impressed that GW has finally seen sense and included all options for all loadouts in this box, unlike other... looking at you, regular Devastators!

How big are the Cent. heads compared to a normal marine?

The helmeted heads are obviously bigger and look like they could fit over a bare head. I'll include a pic as soon as I can.

I wrote this piece in word before copying it over, hence the odd line breaks.

Very true. I appears I wasn't paying close enough attention and the heavy weapons are scattered across all 3 sprues but the mounting points on the arms are all the same and any right handed weapon will fit any right arm and vice-versa for the left side.

Sorry to chime in - sometimes MS likes to play silly.  Get a paragraph written in notepad for example, come back to it, keep word wrap on, resize the window you're in, and then copy / paste to something else, and it keeps the paragraph width the same, thereby forcing you to painstakingly remove all the un-entered carriage returns.  Ah, gotta love MS *sarcasm oozes like Nurgle on a wet day*.

Seriously though...

Can you make up both sets of arm weapon choices (lascannons/HB, and grav-guns) ?  For example, making them fully magnetisable, without having to buy say, spare shoulder pads or other parts.

Also, what size are the flamers / meltas please, Dreadnought CCW size, tactical squad size, or somewhere in between ? (wondering if they would make good spares for furiosos etc).

Thanks.

The kit is 100% magnet-friendly, see my thread here. Things to note:

- Magnetizing the arms is a cinch because both the fists and the weapons offer ample real estate to sink magnets into.

- If magnetizing, you would do well to forgo the cables. In theory it is possible to attach the cables to the magnetized weapons (via pins, for example, or tiny magnets); in practice it is very fiddly and might not work (I completely ruined one of the cables trying to get it done).

- Chest weapons can be magnetized as well or just pinned, because they sit in fairly deep cowlings and it doesn't take much to keep them in place.I was too lazy to bother though.

- You can magnetize the flamer and the melta attachments for the assault drills, but it will definitely take some doing. The melta and the flamer are regular tactical melta and flamer, minus the pistol grip. They attach to the side of the assault drill rather awkwardly, but there is enough space to semi-discreetly sink a magnet there. Again, for this project I didn't bother.

- Finally, if you feel extra-obsessive, you can even magnetize the sergeant's targeter module/eagle crest (the targeter is for the devastators, the eagle crest for the assault). It mounts to a little post on the sarge's back that is thick enough to accept a small magnet, and likewise the targeter and the crest sit on a post that can be drilled and a magnet can be sunk into it.

Wow, I've been thread-jacked. Oh well.

Grm. Apologies. I just get unduly excited when the subject of magnetizing anything comes up. I think I'd magnetize my cat if I could.

I'll bog off now. Please, go on as originally intended, people would love to see sprue pictures I'm sure.

Magnetize a cat? I'd pay money to watch that!
