Kaldoth
So my local store is having a small painting competition. One unconverted miniature from any of the 40k armies. First place gets a hundred dollar gift card. Sooooo, here's mine! :D http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c206/Kaldoth/IMG_20131019_222401_115.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c206/Kaldoth/IMG_20131019_222432_607.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c206/Kaldoth/IMG_20131019_222343_629.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c206/Kaldoth/IMG_20131019_222230_470.jpg I've been trying to get a yellow teardrop decal on the right shoulder but no matter how close I cut the thing off the sheet it bubbles and falls off… Any tips? Also how do I get rid of that "decal shine" around the chapter symbol? C&C appreciated! ^_^ Cheers, -Kal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282178-blood-angels-sergeant-painting-competition-entry/ Share on other sites
Rymeer
Hello there... my only negative comment on the pics is the issue with the reflective chapter icon on the shoulder pad. You can get it to be matte (non reflective) easily enough... just mix white glue (aka: elmer's glue) with water, at a 50-50 mixture and paint over the area to me matte... the glue-water mix, when dry, is totally transparent, yet non-reflective... making your icons look painted on, instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. Just a thought, Rymeer P.S. yeah, I DO know it works... I've done this with my entire army, the Crusading Lions. Believe me, I've gotten plenty of comments about the look of the transfers as being painted on, instead of the shiney transfers most see on otherwise nice models and paint jobs. ephrael
Excellent looking Blood Angel you have there you should be proud no matter where you place in the competition. I have a friend on another forum that swears by a coat of GW's Lahmian Medium on the area the decal is going before and after placing it. I haven't tried it yet myself but his results are fantastic. Melekharn
Great looking mini! I've heard of the Lahmian medium working a treat. Some people have even used matte varnish. Haven't heard the glue/water one though... might have to try that. In regards to the yellow drop, perhaps you'll just have to very carefully paint over the black one, just use a really, really fine detail brush! ephrael
I forgot to mention the product that I use for the actual application of the decals. Micro-Sol and Micro-Set from Microscale Industries. I've used them for about 20 years or so and they are the greatest thing ever for decals. You apply some Micro-Set to the model and then slide the wetted decal off the paper backing onto the model with a brush. Blot with a paper towel gently, let dry over night and then another coat of Lahmian Medium and you are all set. The Micro-Set makes the decal stick to the mini better and it makes the carrier film look invisible so you don't see the edge when it dries. It's pretty cheap and you can buy it at most model train shops or HobbyTown USA, $4/1oz. irwit
I use micro set and sol..it is great stuff. Also if you want to reduce the shine you really should be using varnish. A matt coat will ropve your model no end. sockwithaticket
It's a fine looking mini. As you said it's for a comp I would perhaps suggest:- trying to neaten up the inside wings on the right-hand side of the chest aquilla, they've blurred together a bit.- maybe adding some additional/starker highlights to the skull and scroll on the fist.- neaten up the highlight on the bolt pistol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282178-blood-angels-sergeant-painting-competition-entry/#findComment-3501083 Share on other sites
