Stormclaw - Space Wolf Stormtalon Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've received a few requests to expand on my flyer conversion. I didn't take any step by step photos because it was something that happened out of a very basic idea to use the Stormtalon cockpit so here goes....

The finished flyer:

Side:

Step 1: Get hold of a Landspeeder and build the basic box with no small 'side wings'. Cut it in half just where the crew compartment starts. The GW razor saw is perfect for this step.

Step 2: Build the Stormtalon cockpit (do not add the side vents, fuselage or assault cannons, just the cockpit). Glue the Cockpit to the back end of the Landspeeder

Step 3: cut the front vents from tne Stormtalon fuselage and glue to the top of the cockpit/ landspeeder. Cut at the first natural join you can see on the picture above

Step 4: glue the Stormtalon engines to the side, just change the direction of the small wing to sloping side forward. I put a pin through the entire landspeeder just to be sure, but glue will do the trick if you don't want to go that far.

Step 5: build and glue the Stormtalon weapon pods to the cockpit. I preferred using the sleek pod and changing out the front for different weapon options

Step 6: cut plasticard to fit the bottom of the cockpit and glue. Use the Landspeeder weapons mount, putting two assault cannons on instead of the assault cannon and targeter, and pin to the bottom. You'll have to trim and tinker to get the mount and weapons spot on. Do not use the original Stormtalon mount.

Step 7: pin the stormtalon back wing (sloping side forward) into the back of the Landspeeder

Step 8: pin the Stormclaw to your flying stand and you should have one times Space Wolf flyer

Thanks for the tutorial Provocation. Kinda what I figured but the beakdown was really nice. Looking forward to more of your work. Heck, I may not even wait for the new codex to throw this together. Two of these escorting in my  converted Storm Eagle & my tread head friend will crap himself. LOL!!!

Hi pedrogzc

From the bits that are left, the front of the landspeeder and back of the stormtalon actually fit together quite well. I've done a wee bit more work on it with a few odd bits and plasticard but you can't quite get two conversions out of the original two kits. Just waiting for that one idea/ piece that will complete this one

Hey Provocation!

The Stormclaw looks amazing. When I look at the profile of the aircraft I am immediately reminded of a predator patrolling the skies looking to bring down it's larger brethren with speed and cunning - just like a skywolf! Great job! Congratulations on the creativity behind the concept as well - very inspirational!

And talking about inspirational... Yes. I couldn't resist building one for myself. And of course I came up with a few questions:

1) When you say "Build the Stormtalon cockpit (do not add the side vents, fuselage or assault cannons, just the cockpit)", do you mean that the bottom part of the cockpit (the one with the four turbines and the slot for the flying stand) needs to be cut away? I'm guessing yes, since you are pinning the Stormclaw to the flying stand? I didn't cut the fuselage piece away at all and now there is a huge gap on either side between the lower part of the cockpit and the bottom edge of the Land Speeder body... I could probably fill it with plasticard, but I guess it would change the side profile of the entire aircraft to a more box-like shape which I don't like...

2) While building the assault cannon turret did you cut away the lower part of the cockpit (with the original round slot for the assault cannon turret) and replace the bottom with plasticard? It kind of looks that way...? Or did you just build a "cover" for the round slot and then attatch the assault cannon assembly to it?

3) When attatching the back fin to the back of the Land Speeder where is the join? Between the turbines? Above them where the "roof" of the speeder starts? On top of the roof?

Thanks for the info and inspiration!
