Horus Heresy start out kit.

The Highlander

Recommended Posts

Ok so basically I'm starting a Night Lords heresy list, and need some advice on a unit list for first purchase.

What I have so far is:

One 10 man tactical squad armed with Umbra Ferrox (5 are Maximus, 5 Crusade).

A five man Cataphractii squad w/special weapons kit.

Advice wanted, can be anything from pure aesthetics to in-game effectiveness.

Also I can't decide whether or not to give the tactical squad some heavy weapons. Maybe meltas, or something.

Technically, Tactical Squads can't take Special or Heavy Weapons. That's what Support & Heavy Squads are for.

Or veteran tactical squads.

I'd get a commander of some sort next.

The Praetors set is among the best models I have ever seen. While the champion\MoS kit is cool too. The generic Maximus command set is...eh.

Yup - I'd suggest a 2-1 ratio for Support Squads (this includes your Recon Squad and regular Support Squad), so next (on my list anyway) would be another 10 tacticals, 5 support guys (either melta, plasma or volkite) and then some form of commander (either a praetor or consul) and go from there :) however if you want to specialise (a specific Rite of War) then this will change - I chose the Pride of The Legion RoW so my entire force (just over 2k pts) consists of 21 Terminators (inc Praetor) 1 Arti Champion, 2 Contemptors and 2 LR Phobos' :)

Before anything else I'd decide on a RoW since that's going to greatly effect what you can and can't take. If you take Terror Assault for example you MUST have 3 units of terror squads as the 3 compulsory troop choices and you're restricted to only 1 extra hq and 1 heavy support.

I knew I didn't want to use a Rite of War that greatly changed my choices. I also knew I wanted troops and tanks. From this, I decided, regardless of my army specifics, I wanted 2 full 20-man Tactical squads, and a 10-man Missile equipped Heavy Weapon Squad. That's an army right there and is plenty to go one with.

Aye - if you're a tank lover there's a RoW for it, loving the BA Jump Assault vibe there's a RoW for it, want a regular force to pick/choose anything available, then don't choose a RoW (they aren't compulsory) so build what you like but as always keep in mind it has pros and cons to both :)
