Legion Baneblade Variants?

First post on B&C, yay. Anyhow I see in the new book that there are legion Shadowswords etc. in the art. Seeing as I have an unpainted Shadowsword I was wondering if anyone had seen anywhere that states you can field one in a legion list and if so can you give it a space marine crew.

Found it, page 163.

Basically, if its a superheavy, and there are rules for it in any Imperial Armour book, you can use it. This includes Imperial Armour: Apocalypse and Aeronautica.

Woah, I'm surprised (and pleased) that I missed this.  Despite its nominally post-heresy heritage, I've been thinking that a Macharius Vanquisher would make an excellent LoW at 2k points, and I was a little sad that there wasn't an official option for giving it SM crew and armored ceramite.  Still a little sad, I'd like to be able to put armored ceramite on it, but taking one and crewing it with Space Marines seems quite reasonable now.

@kitwulfen: check the replies to my 2500 pts IH list :) I said I was considering a Shadowsword of a Stormblade instead of a Fellblade.

By the way, I was about to post a similar question, but decided not to, cause' I decided to get a FW Shadowsword anyway. Much better than a Fellblade, points-wise cheaper, better looking. I wouldn't use Machariuses for the Heresy, because - fluff. But Shadowswords, Stormblades and teh Baaahnblades fit perfectly.

Oh, I knew you could take any of the Baneblade variants - that's made quite clear where the Lord of War slot is explained in Book One. it was the availability of Space Marine Crews for them in Book Two that surprised me.

The Macharius is actually reasonable for a HH force. While the Macharius exactly as it is may or may not have served in the Great Crusade or Horus Heresy, it's made quite clear in both the HH books and IA1 Second Edition that there were various superheavy tanks that served in the Imperial Army and Legions. The Macharius was developed from a lost-and-found fragment of a blueprint that may have been for one of these tanks.

ETA: Another cool option would be a Crassus. You can fit an entire 20 man tactical squad, plus a support squad or two, inside it. And give it up to 4 lascannons, because why not?

I see :)

About the Macharius, I'm still not sure, it only says 'developed by Magos Nalax of Lucius forge world'...

But back to the Baneblade variants I'd like to take the opportunity to ask about the variants you field or consider fielding. I for once, decided to go with the Shadowsword instead of the Fellblade. Mainly because of the model design - the double-barelled tank with fragile-looking sponsons doesn't really appeal to me, whereas the Shadowsword reminds me of a WW2 era heavy tank destroyers (and that's what it is in the game). But I was seriously considering a Stormlord or a Stormblade for my Heresy force.

I personally like the stormsword? With the massive executioner cannon... I like plasma :D however imagine the devastation from 2 10 man devastator squads with lascannons and volkite culverins sat in a stormlord (which ain't half bad itself with the Vulcan mega-bolter.
I view the stormlord as a mobile anti-tank battery, like an up scaled rhino - allows large units or 2+ smaller units the flexibilty of manoeuvring for LoS and a very stable firing platform - enemy super heavy, just splat it with the 10 lascannons in the back, lots of gribblies - that's okay S5 AP5 LOVES tyranids haha especially with all those extra hits and no saves...

Effectiveness wise shadowswords are a clear winner, I always found stormlords a bit lacking for a super heavy tbh. Stormblades aaare pretty though msn-wink.gif

I wasn't so sure when I saw the rules for the Shadowsword on paper, I mainly went with it because of the model. But... In the first game I went with Shadowsword it turned up to be an absolute killer. Exploded a Spartan on the first turn, took 4 wounds off Vulkan (and 2 of his retinue) on second. Truth be told, I fielded it with IH Castreman Orth, a total of BS 6 gave me well over 50% chance of hitting right on spot with every shot, but still...

If I were to go with a Stormlord or a Stormblade, it would be a completely different list - a LoW for mass-killing infantry, and other units dedicated to fend off heavy hitters. But I really like having a Titan-killer (or a Primarc-killer for that matter) in form of a Shadowsword, especially with Escalation released.
