Need anti-Centurion ideas

Okay, here's the deal; guy in my local GW runs a combined 2000 points of White Scars and Raven Guard in about a 50/50 split. Khan leads the Scars bikers whilst Shrike heads up the infantry-centric Ravens. Ravens are mostly tacticals with a Vanguard JP unit to bodyguard Shrike and provide a counter-attack force.

This is where it gets tricksy. He has 3 Centurions as part of the Raven Guard mob; two with Grav+Amp and the Sarge w/ heavy bolter/omniscope. All have Hurri-bolters in the chest rig. Standard tactic is castle the Ravens behind an ADL and send the Scars off hunting. Whilst your busy dealing with or avoiding the Scars, you wander into Grav range and that's when he has you; since it's predominately a Marine-meta in my store the tactical squads he uses to guard the Centurions are plasma-heavy and anyone who tries to get into H-t-H is thus guaranteed a brisk welcome.

Anyone got ideas on how to counter this? Initially I thought of dumping a Chapter Masters' orbital bombardment on them but my rolls are by no means reliable. Well, reliably bad, but that's another matter. Second idea was a pod squad to counter-grav them with Sternies, but that's awfu' expensive for a suicide squad.

Or am I missing something?

There's always the Vindicator. Although short ranged, it is more reliable than the Chapter Master's OB and will ID them with only a possibility of a cover save.

Otherwise, Sternguard wouldn't be bad, or grav weapons/plasma weapons.

Battle brother why do you need to kill the emperors newest gift to all his loyal sons, unless you are a traitor of the highest order? But as Dark guard said a vindicator will work wonders and you said hes using plasma mainly, use a trick I would use back in the day, an Ironclad dreadnought and pod it in their face. it wont do much when it shows up but if he cant kill it it can wipe the centurion squad in 1 round of CC

I won't be killing them, silly, this is just...uh... an exercise. Yes, that's it. An exercise. whistlingW.gif

How about some plasma cannon devastators? (Or las cannons.) Better yet, take 2 squads, with 8 weapons. They outrange Centurions and have AP2, and 4x whatever gun means you're likely to do wounds. So you can kill them before they grav gun you, Centurions are pricey and have a low model count. When you're done killing Centurions, they also work on bikes.

What do you typically run? He is splitting his force right? Go max high str low ap shots with as many rhino shells as you can get. Stay as far from the raven guard element as possible ignore them completely and put every point you have into taking out the scars. If he divides like you say he is gifting you tactical superiority at the point of contact. Bikers are tough but they are not 2:1 tough.

A good way to pull this off some grav amp cents of your own. They will take out a squad+ of bikers per turn.

Other options that haven't been mentioned yet involve getting allies of your own (I'd probably suggest Imperial Guard for their artillery tanks - Medusas for longer-ranged Demolisher Cannon-equivalent weapons, or Colossi for anti-MEQ goodness to kill the rest of his army - and excellent if your meta is Marine-heavy) or using a Stormraven as a delivery mechanism for an assault unit.

Ignore the Raven Guard.  If he wants to castle up 1,000 points of infantry that only have a 24" gun range, let him.  Apply all your firepower on killing the White Scars; you'll have him doubled on points, so it shouldn't be too exceptionally difficult.  The only maneuver element of the Ravens that has any tactical speed is Shrike and his Vanguard, which are only T4 3+ models -- a lot of bolters can do them in, and one good on-target Vindi shell ruins their entire day.

I agree with most of the ideas being put out here.....

Go second, and deploy your forces to get after the Scars.... if you are desperate to take out the Centurions, then out-range him with AP2... devastators with lascannons or plasma cannons are your way-ahead!

If you are interested in allying with the Dark Angels, a cheap librarian with Prescience, and infravisor and a PFG will twin-link your devastators' weapons, ignore nightfighting and give them an invulnerable save. Add in a squad of Black Knights in the Fast Attack slot and you've got super-mobile twin-linked plasma bikes with the Ravenwing Grenade Launcher to reduce enemy Toughness and/or WS and I. smile.png
