Aztec like Space Marines ? Eagle warriors?

Recommended Posts

Replying by mistake this morning (for me in China) to an old post, (Thank you 1000heathens for helping with my ADD J), I dig up an old idea for a SM chapter.
The post was about Eagle Warriors and googling them I found out that it was also the name for a class of warriors in the Aztec Army.

My idea, suggestion to the guy who was looking to select a color theme, about using the eagle warriors in an Aztec way. Tortoise blue and white.

I don’t know much and couldn’t find much about the background of the EW. They seem to be really Ultramarine like. Does anybody can point me in any direction for background?

If the EW theme doesn’t work out, I was thinking about using the army list of space wolves. I discover that they could ride wolves? (yeah I stopped modeling in 2004). So I could be cool to have a group of SM riding lizards, using the same rules.

I was thinking of converting SM  using the lizard men elements, giving them fur or lizard pelt, feathers, teeth necklaces,  robes, jungle bases, and using a tortoise blue as a base color.

What do you guys think?

Somebody already did that?

Any ideas? for an chapter name also?

What army list should I use?

I usually don’t play my armies but give them to clubs or sale them so they still need to be “codex”

If you think it’s a crappy idea, please do tell, I’ll have another one in 2 minutes. I already have to other projects (black legion and ab-humans) on the back burner.

Cheers B&C,

I personally love the idea of Aztec marines, /tg/ made a chapter based on Aztec culture

Go for it dude, SW sounds like the best codex for the rules and I think the paint scheme youre describing could look really nice.

thanks man,

I could make a space jaguars army rather than a space wolve army :)

or I could stick to Aztec army theme and make assault squads as Eagle Warriors, CC squads as Jaguar warriors and find some other names or theme for the rest of the army

For me, the best take on Aztec Space Marines has to be this reimagining of the Rainbow Warriors.

Also, note that obsidian blades are still one of the closest things we have to monomolecular blades nowadays, they're just very fragile. Might be worth throwing in a fluff line or two about "flex-obsidian" or something, making it sci-fi'd up as less brittle.

thanks,

maybe the idea was buried in my skull after reading the Rogue Trader.

Being French the rainbow warrior name is really ... tricky but it could be fun,

the artwork and the color are really the direction I was aiming at

thanks again

@ Rev. Tiberius Jackhammer

This website is awesome.

It is also really strange in a was because that guy has the similar ideas to mine.

Living in China, I had the idea for a Chinese SM chapter and an Japanese One.

I collected Blood Angels and was considering them as vampire as he does.

Looks like I found my geek soul mate :D

Thanks for the recommendation! happy.png

Regarding Chapters with Aztec themes in general. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from creating one of your own from scratch. It's something I'd love to see as it's not that common a theme compared to others. I think the Eagle Warriors could suit an Aztec theme with a bit of work as it seems that they have relatively little official background that would or could contradict it.

In any case, have fun with whatever you decide to go with! happy.png

@ Aquilanus

I read your post. Great stuff, great work, I like the illustrations of your blog too

You know what ? Now I'm actually tempted to join your Rainbow Warrior revival bunch.

First because I’m French.cool.png

Second because if I have learned something over the years is that French can’t laugh about themselves and I think this is actually a good opportunity to do so. Yes, we love irony and cynicism.nuke.gif

Third because Rogue Trader was the first book I bought on my first visit to a GW Store in London. (yes you can call me grand pa) so I’m all about the 80’s.devil.gif

I believe that yes the Rainbow Warrior name was thrown as a joke in the beginning and that somebody made an plausible explanation with the Aztec, hoppies SM chapter and by fear of being politically incorrect “erased” the chapter using space nuns. But worst chapter names were created and I really like the Aztec style for SM. To my according there are not enough ethnical SM chapters or barely any. So I’ll run with it. I’ll start a test model, with an Aztec personalization and people could tag along and suggest me some paint theme.

I was going for a tortoise blue but I think it might be too obviously close to the lizardmen theme.

So if you’ll add me to the Aztec mix, I’d be happy to run with itbiggrin.png

The illustration was done by B+C member Greyall. His topic currently stands at 80 pages! blink.png I can't remember which page the illustration in question is on, but it might be worth taking a look at his other stuff in any case.

I do miss Rogue Trader sad.png

As for adding you to the Aztec mix, well, I'd be very glad to see what you come up with, regardless of whether they're Rainbow Warriors or not smile.png They even have a background update (as in, they actually have a background now, even if it is really small! laugh.png )

As for the tortoise blue, well, you could add a little to the army by way of weapon colours or something similar smile.png

good old Rogue Trader

Amazing stuff from Greyall !!! indeed

I thinking about using elements from Space Wolf (for the teeth necklaces and others), saurus (clubs to replace the traditionnal knife), a little bit of green stuff, maybe convert the shoulder pads lines to make them more Aztec like, |_|

I think they could be like jungle fighter carrying trophies from their enemies too. Who knows if they are persecuted by the Sisters maybe they went rogue and are now mercenaries ?

Why not having a librarian offering a heart to the sun smile.png

the tortoise blue could indeed go into the details, eyes, eagle torso, gems...

I've used a few Space Wolf bits for some of HQ's in my WIP topic:http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271445-rainbow-warriors-after-etl13-and-beyond/I'm currently doing some other stuff, but I want to get back to them soon smile.png

The paints I use for them are a mix of the new and old paint ranges.

Black undercoat

Kantor blue (new range)

Drakenhof nightshade (new range) wash

Enchanted blue highlights (old range)

I do like the Space Wolves range mainly as their heads are nice and shouty and the hair makes it a lot easier to model feathered head dresses happy.png

It would be nice to see Space Jaguars, especially as it gives the excuse to model Jaguar skin cloaks etc happy.png

liking the prototype though if you could make the teeth on the sword look more chain driven that would be awesome.

just noticed these and wondered if they'd be of interest to you

I've been looking at those bases and I wish I'd seen them sooner as I'd base every single Rainbow Warrior I have with them. As it is, I'd have to remove each model (and I used plastic cement, so they are very firmly fixed!) and re-base them.

I actually think it'd be worth it! happy.png

Use a Stanley knife with a fresh blade then; two chops per Marine, and you're well on your way to better bases! ;)

also just seen the French armies on parade pics on the GW site and noticed that a few of the banner tops could be seen as being a bit Aztec. Also, the decorations on the body of the necrosphinx could be useful. Change the torso out for a head of some kind and you could have some sort of cavalry mount. some of the other bits from the kit might be useful for totems/weapons too.
