Fire Golem
First of all, I'm sorry, I know you get lots of topics like this. I'm thinking of doing a pre heresy force. I'm thinking Alpha Legion at the moment because I love the fluff but normally it's between them, SoH or Night Lords. It's very difficult to decide on one legion -.- How should I go about starting a heresy force? I'm guessing the first book? But where then? Olis
The main army list is in the first FW HH book. However, should you wish to collect Night Lords or Alpha Legion, you'll also require the respective books they're in. So, my advice for now is to decide for certain which particular army you wish to go for. Brother Heinrich
Just like Olisredan said, know which direction you want to go before you set out, as a legion is definitely a big hobbying venture. Basically it's up to you to do some soul searching and decide which one you love the most, try out some test models so you know the scheme won't be too hard and make you want to quit, and get a good vision in your head of what you want the theme of the legion to be. You can really justify a lot of different characteristics within a legion, remember that all of the legions eventually go on to break up in one way or another, whether they become chapters or warbands, there are differences down to an individual level that mean you can have a group of Iron Hands who use deadly stuff like Phosphex and Rad weapons, or a Night Lords company who excels at siege warfare and armored assaults. Basically you can justify whatever direction you want to go, play a Legion for what you love about it, not the rules it has. That motivation will carry your project far further than simply building towards something that has nice looking rules. Hope that helps. Grotsmasha
The great thing about the Heresy List is you can't PAINT your guys however you want as during the Heresy/Crusade, the Legions loaned troops to each other all the time. For example you could choose SoH as your primary force, Praetor, Centurions, Tacticals, Dreads etc, then choose to paint your Recon Asquad as Alphas and your Assault/Despoilers as Night Lords. You'd just have use the core list for everything, or choose one Legions rule for your core detachment. Fire Golem
I think Alpha Legion and Night Lords are my favourite lore wise, but I love the sons of horus models, like the contemptor... It's really difficult to pick one legion. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282984-where-to-start/#findComment-3516168 Share on other sites
Brother Heinrich
So use the models for Sons of Horus and paint them as Night Lords, there are multiple people doing exactly that. Check out Flint13's pre-heresy Night Lords blog in the WIP section, she's using a fair number of Sons of Horus parts to represent the brutality of the Night Lords. Fire Golem
Wow, those SoH models look really cool as night lords. I may do a AL NL mixed force then, best of all worlds that way Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282984-where-to-start/#findComment-3516183 Share on other sites
