What is your current "go to" pack in 6th?

Recommended Posts

As the title say's and due to the small rumbles about a Wolf Priest with Plasma Pistol (optional) and Saga of the Hunter join's a 10 man Grey Hunter pack also toting 2 Plasma Guns, a Plasma Pistol (optional), Power Axe (optional), and a Wolf Standard as the new answer to a lot of the shooty armies pinning us down and raining on our parade. Hiding in the bushes is no longer such a good idea!!

If you think there is another unit that point for point is more effective in 6th edition post it here and tell us all why you prefer your answer. Let's get some discussion moving around here people!!

There was another thread quite recently i think that went through a few variants on this

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282164-wolf-priest-with-saga-of-the-hunter/

I wouldnt say its definately a 'go to' setup, but it can have its uses, and i often include it in lists

personally, i really like the outflank squad, definately gets round some folk pinning you in. However not always. For example, played my housemate last week, who brought a pretty nice CSM list, he setup his aegis line and devastators at the back of his table edge, but right in the middle (we'd rolled and got lengthways deployment). He'd also place most of his objectives pretty central. This meant that my outflankers couldnt actually come on anywhere near them, and spent a couple turns slowly moving up through cover to avoid simply being krak missled back off the board (i was having a bad game in general though)

I like to run mine as follows:

Wolf priest - p.pistol, soth

wolf guard - p.pistolx2, motw

10x grey hunters - 2x P.gun, wulfen, banner, axe

id also attached a biomancy runepriest in the last game for shizz and giggles, (was a 2500pts game and i was struggling to fill my list with wysiwyg) with the aim of getting them FNP) but rolled badly on the biomancy table. His smite power did add some extra shooty fun though, and the squad ripped through the 3 squads he'd left on one side of the board to guard an objective (tactical, devastator, & scout)

can wg take 2 plasma pistols? for one guy? just double checking.

Yes he can take both, and he can shoot both in the same turn ("Gunslinger" rule). Expensive but fun. Gets you up to 8 Plasma shots from that unit when it walks on; averages to about 5 dead enemy Marines, or 3 dead enemy Terminators, not even counting the effects from the Bolt Guns in the squad (an additional 2 Marines dead, give or take).

I changed the title of the thread to reflect a little more on my desire to spark some additional discussion on the unit type you roll in your armies. I've been messing around with the Hunter Priest myself and in 2 games he and his pack have at least double their points each time.

I want to hear answers from the power gaming side to the casual fluff army builder. Give us something to discuss!!

Never been a fan of loading so much wargear into one GH unit. I'll grab the banner.. and maybe pp WP, but that's about it. The power weapon and motw just seem too expensive for a unit that won't get to use them til at least second turn and likely will get picked off before reaching combat in the third turn by any defense-conscientious player.

I do like to put a TDAWGPL with assault cannon in the pack, to soak up bolter fire and give my GHs some longevity.

That's definitely a good option, and the Rending AC makes up for loss of Gunslinger firepower. Definitely helps in Survivability with how wound allocation works now.

My go-to pack at the moment are my quad-plasma footsloggers;

  • 10x Grey Hunters
  • 2x Plasma Guns
  • 1x Plasma Pistol
  • 1x Wolf Standard (w/PP)
  • 1x Mark of the Wulfen
  • 1x Wolf Guard (TDA, Combi-Plasma, Power Weapon)

I take at least one squad in just about every game. They're expensive, but they make their points back pretty quickly once they unleash a volley of plasma. If I can afford to add a Wolf or Rune Priest for some Preferred Enemy/Divination shenanigans, then it's just that much sweeter.

Well, my go to pack for Gray Hunters is a little more pricey but here it is: 8 Gray Hunters W/MG,PP,PW,MoW, & W.Std. Basic building block for my lists. Can add a WGPL & an HQ(usually a RP) & throw them in a Rhino or put the WG in TDA & throw them in a Pod. Simple addition of 2 GH's & extra special weapon to put them in a LR if need be. These boys have taken the charge of Orks, Berzerkers & once even a Decimator(that was just dumb luck but I'll take it! LOL!!). Points heavy but more often then not they make their pts back & have the staying power to get the job done.

You've got one too many Plasma Pistols in that unit.

I really haven't had too much trouble with "shooty" in this addition, thus my favorite GH pack is fairly CC oriented.

PAWG
Combi-Plasma
Power Fist

9x GH
Plasma Rifle
Power Fist
Wolf Standard
MoTW

No.. they don't get the 2nd weapon, but they do ride in a rhino or DP fairly easily and do put quite a hurting on once they get into CC.

Misunderstanding--I meant the bearer of the Wolf Standard is also wielding the pack's (single) plasma pistol :)

can i have my lone wolf (TDA/SS/CF) as my go to pack?? Has been about 5 games now since i didnt include one, and they didnt easily make their points back :D

- last game, killed several sternguard, an entire honor guard squad, a librarian on a bike, and most of an attack bike squad.

Yeah Dan!! Your LW seem to do a whole lot better than mine!! ...even though I run him in every game as well. It could be that my opponents are used to me running him and more often than not shoot the :cuss out of him right off the bat!!

prey_fall2_the_grey:  Do you ever run it w/o a transport??

I've cut the power weapon from my GH pack to add a PP. I find, as Wulfebane also mentioned, that the axe swingin' marine more often than not won't make it into CC anyways. So more plasma from the start is panning out to be more attractive too me.

I did quite a few times actually. When I first started buying models I bought everything I thought was "cool:" two Land Raiders, Thunder Wolves... lots of termies. A Drop Pod was the only transport I had that didn't cost 250(pts). They normally fared pretty well (My favorite GH squad), because there was always something else to shoot at, and the squad doesn't stick out as the most BAMF. I have other Packs that look more intimidating when I go on foot, like a 10 man squad with a TDAWG: SS/TH or a shooty Pack with 10 man squad and TDAWG run with either: SS/SB/Cyclone, or SS/AC. Those guys typically draw lots of fire while I try and systematically move my guys up the board. I ALWAYS take a Drop Pod with PAWGS and TDAWGS designed to drop in the enemy's deployment zone and melta and plasma the mess out of someone, and hopefully survive shooting and take an assault. When you have that, two vindicators, LFs and Thunderwolves on the board... the opponent really has a time prioritizing targets.

However all of that plasma is definitely intriguing, I may have to try that out along with a Wolf Priest w/Saga of the Hunter an will see what outflanking plasma pack does tongue.png

I usually just try and deploy him out of sight of everything, and take my time getting him up the table.

Even if you opponent piles a :cuss load of firepower into him, at least that firepower isnt taking out your scoring units! He is a great, cheap distraction unit that can put out some serious damage if not dealt with.

Or maybe im just lucky. I had mine in one turn take the firepower of 2 vindicators, a 3 man obliterator squad, and 2 full plasma loadout plaguemarine squads..and keep going :)
