What colors are Pre-Heresy Word Bearers?

Typically, they are described as slate gray. Of course, that all depends on what point in time we're speaking of; even before Istvaan and the onset of the Heresy, there were some specialist formations with red and black added to the mix (Gal Vorbak).

Well, this really depends on the point in the Horus Heresy that you want to portray your marines as.

Personally, I think mixed schemes look good because it really sets out elite units from others (which is one of the reasons I really like the SoH 1st Company black, red, and gold standing out from the standard green, black, and gunmetal.  If I were doing Word Bearers, I'd do slate gray for most guys, and then red and gunmetal additions for Gal Vorbak, veterans, or terminators, and maybe some of the HQ choices (though that really depends on the HQ choice taken in my opinion)

The crimson and black was part of the Gal Vorbak from their inception from the remnants of the Chapter of the Serrated Sun. Starting from Isstvan V, it began to spread to other elements of the Legion. Eventually, it would become the colors of the Legion.

Prior to this, they wore slate grey.

There were a bunch of different Chapters, and I'm sure you could get away with a lot of cool mixes. The nicest I saw was the slate gray armor with red pauldron trim. The Legion icon and the Red banding really stands out on the grey, nice striking contrast.

I was quite displeased with this picture by FW... The Gal Vorbak were described (in First Heretic) as being in red with black helmets, whereas this one is in red with black pads. At Istvaan V they would be the only marines no longer bearing the traditional grey of the legion (even Erebus seems to wear grey : "Erebus was a grey blur of lethal motion..." - page 446) but the Legion's colours would then start to evolve to the reds it'd be known for.

I was under the impression, reading previous chapters (but I can't find the quote right now) that they'd all be wearing red armour with black helms and silver edging, although Xaphen, as the chaplain, would have bone edging to mark him out...

PH and HH armies are not as prescriptive in their colour schemes as their codex successors. So don't expect standard colour scheme. They may even vary with in a squad.

As to the colour grey, in the next version of Visions of Heresy, the grey matches that of the VI Legion.
