Sohail187
good morning all, hope every one had a nice weekend :D I have j ust finished my caestus assault ram, and i already have a paint scheme in mind. However 1 part of my paint scheme i have no idea how to achieve. I was hoping i could get some info from someone who has either done this. The link above has been copied at a set time. If you look at the model it has like dark brown streaks or lines going backwards, giving the effect that its moving fast, entered through space ect..ect.. smoke marks what ever you want to call it. Any idea's how this is achieved? is it weathering powders? inks? thinned paint? Bung
My bet would be on oil paints. First you need to cover your model with a matt varnish or something like that. I use Tamiya x 22 with an airbrush. Then do a small spott with Burnt Umber, Black or any other brown or mix on the model. Then u use a brush with White Spirit and do the streak thingy. Thats how i would do it. The varnish is important or the White Spirit will attack your Games Workshop or Vallejo colors. Sohail187
Hi and thank you for responding to my question. Ok so it really is the last thing to do. So once i got the paint job done, matt varnish the model, i have rubbing alcohol would that work? Also could i use GW paints or does it have to be oils? GhostLegion
you can get the effect with gw colors, but youll have to have them very thin and be ...well...careful for lack of a better term. the paint would need to be just slightly on the thick side of a true wash to get the coloring, and no, the shades wont do the same effect in this case. a lot of people will also suggest oils as you can keep them workable longer, thus allowing for easier blending and transitions...but I don't think this is a need so much as a preference. alternatively, you could work with pigments and weathering powders. might take you more time to get done, but it will get the project done... Bung
Like nearly any weathering its done after you finish your paint job. I doubt that alcohol works well with oil paints, at least the Tamiya Thinner doesnt for me (Tamiya Acrylics are based on alcohol not water like GW paints). You can do that effect with acrylic colors like GW or Vallejo but its a lot more work and you have to be more careful when applying the paint. Get a cheap tube of Burnt Umber (which is great for doing a brown wash too) and a bottle of White Spirit they arent expensive. You can easily use White Spirit from a DIY Shop they get the same done like the Artist ones if you dont mind the smell and are 20 times ore more cheaper. 1 Liter at a DIY Store is around 3-4 € here and a small tube oil paint is the same range and will last for years when you use them only for painting models. Nemac Vradon
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF//w/weathering-powders.pdf The first effect looks very similar, It's just going down instead of backwards. Sohail187
Ok, i have taken the plunge!!! I found some burnt umber on ebay fairly cheap!! and some white spirit. Really appreciate the tips, this effect will add a lot of detail to my caestus. The only other thing, you guys seem to have experience with using oil paints... do you need a specific type of brush to use with oil paints to stop it from damaging the brush? Bung
In my experience you dont need special bruches. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283137-need-painting-tip/#findComment-3520610 Share on other sites
