How much would not having Horus hurt the Traitor`s cause?

Ahriman (another very strong psyker) has an out of body thingy just so he can go poof that lame space wolf priest.

And when he used that ability earlier in the book, "that lame wolf priest" had to save his ethereal backside from being et by Warp gribblies.

I was not impressed by his performance.

As I said, everyone has their bad days or their matches.

If they didnt, they would be SPIRHITUAL LEIGES or space wo- wait a second...

Magnus could have defeated Russ if he actually tried. Just accept it, because it's true. Russ survived due to that 1+/1++ Plot Armor Save.

You talk as if it's Russ getting the short end of the stick, but it's only Magnus who is getting cheapened by that belief.

Exactly. I'm not sticking up for Magnus per say, I'm saying he HAD the power to stop Russ and Co. completely in their steps. He could have wiped Russ off the face of Prospero without even seeing his face, but he didn't. He was weak because of his failures, and in turn that caused his demise.

It is hinted that Leman Russ has knowledge and/or latent psychic abilities. He actually wards off some of Magnus's attacks in the duel and his warp scream I mentioned beforem What some of you refer to as plot armour is just an unknown quantity in this case. We do not know it's value but make no mistake - the Emperor specificly chose the Wolf King for this task, and must have reasons only known to him.

Also remember that magnus's power reserves are all spent at that point for great ritual magic. He no longer has any thralls left - and it is tzeench that asks him if hebehats his help to destroy them in transit - using the term we. Just as he needed tzeench to break into the webway.

You must also remember, the Emperor sent Russ to DETAIN Magnus, which at that point Magnus was going to comply. Horus changed the orders en route to exterminate Prospero and the entire Legion. We also now know that Russ & Co. Did NOT kill any of the Lost Legions. So this is unprecedented.
Knowing how the wolves operate, this is no speculation. They are a weapon of single purpose. Once loosed they cannot be stired away from their course. No other Primarch would be as receptive to Horus's words in regards to Magnus. They are excutioners, make no mistake. Again, the Emperor knew what he was doing.

Unless Angron kicks the crap out of their Primarch and asks the punks waving bolters at him "Do you feel lucky? Well, do you?"

Then they flee back to their gunships, yelping like wee little puppy men.

"I WON THAT FIGHT! I WON THAT FIGHT! I WON THAT FIGHT! I. WON. THAT FIGHT!"

Ang-zod, being a sore loser to Lara-gar for like, whole minutes.

Well, knowing when to hold'em, when to fold'em, when to walk away, and when to run isn't necessarily a BAD thing.

Wasn't one of the main points of Betrayer that Legions like the Ultramarines and Wolves having the sanity to fall back is a good thing as compared to the Twelfth's "SCREW CASUALTIES WE HAVE CHAINAXES!" modus operandi?

Less manly and stylish, mind, but still a good thing.

Pretty much, while still showing that "bloodbloodbloodbloodBLOODBLOODBLOODBLOOD" tactics are still fully capable of ruining anyone's day.

The way I saw it, Russ was trying to show Angron the benefits of tamed and leashed ferocity. Sure, it may have weakened him in the individual sense, as seen by the duel, but it strengthens the whole far beyond the power of the individual.

Besides, you can never unleash that which isn't leashed. Or else the line would have been "Let the Kraken continue to do its thing!"

Which is far less catchy.
