Haven't heard that theory before this thread but really not a fan. The Nids being from another galaxy and being totally unknown lends more a mystery to them. Are they running from something worse, are the current Hivefleets just scouts/vanguards of a much larger force etc. The Old Ones had their chance and they failed, they don't need to have created the Nids.
