Quixus
Besides the names for colors is there any difference between the model color range and the game color range? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283581-vallejo-model-color/ Share on other sites
S.k.i.t.t.l.e
As far as I know there is no direct correlation between the two ranges, there may be some colours that are similar to others in them, but to my knowledge model colour is geared more towards other types of modellers (than us), with greater emphasis on military colours etc. Whereas VGC is pretty much just GW paints (not the newest ones) with slightly different names. I've used VGC and their Air range, and they are both great. Just my $0.02. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283581-vallejo-model-color/#findComment-3527199 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
There is actually one small difference, which in part accounts for the slight price difference. The VMC have more pigment and a slightly lighter acrylic binder. This allows them to cover with fewer coats, and also present a more matte finish. And, as S.k.i.t.t.l.e says, they have a much wider range of much more "natural" colours (in part so that painters need to mix less, and this helps them with accuracy in maintaining or replicating historical uniform schemes). The VGC range is smaller (though still pretty huge), and has many colours that are intended to be directly analogous to the first two generations of Citadel Colour - even going so far as to have similar names. VGC is intended to be mixed much more and highlighted much more, and therefore has slightly less pigment in it, along with a stronger acrylic binder. This helps with blends, shades and highlights, and allows the paints to be thinned more. It also makes the paint more durable for handling "bare" when gaming with the figures than the VMC. The VGC range has been "updated" over the years to add equivalents to the Citadel Foundation paints and the Citadel Washes. Both ranges are very good, and both are very high quality products. The VGC range is more than suitable for model painting and is totally inter-mixable with VMC as well, so if you want a specific historical uniform colour for your Imperial Guard or whatever, you can can just use what you want from the VMC range. They are also fully inter-mixable with other ranges too, like Citadel, Reaper and P3. Note that both ranges are quite matte (although this does very slightly from colour to colour!), and both cover very well (although again, varies from colour to colour). madscuzzy
I've always found that the binder for the VMC is stronger than the VGC. VGC actually rubs off a lot easier, while VMC usually has some sort of stretchy quality to it, not dissimilar to primers. Major_Gilbear
I've always found that the binder for the VMC is stronger than the VGC. VGC actually rubs off a lot easier, while VMC usually has some sort of stretchy quality to it, not dissimilar to primers. I found that the VMC is a little more opaque and goes "gritty" and breaks faster when you thin it a lot than VGC. Adding a touch of matte medium to paints on the palette does fix both of these issues though and guarantees a matte finish. Otherwise, I've not noticed a huge difference in durability personally. Then again, I don't handle my models whilst painting, and double-seal with gloss diamond-hard floor varnish and Testors Dullcote at the end... :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283581-vallejo-model-color/#findComment-3527681 Share on other sites
