Horus Lupercal-Character design

  Hello Brothers,

The guys at DesignstrikeUK and some other people are involved in the pre-production of a fanmade short film about the Horus Heresy (just a fragment, not all the story), and I am designing several characters. The first one is Horus Lupercal, in the time when he was still leading the Luna Wolves, fighting side by side with the Blood Angels. I´d appreciate all kind of input and feedback, so feel free to provide your opinion about this first rough draft: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/324/6/4/horus_character_design__1st_session_by_diegogisbertllorens-d6uzw3o.jpg

I prefer the far left armour version - the colour of the tabard is rich, but not too bright - I feel the colour of the far right's tabard draws the eye away from the rest of the detail too much -  but the purple shade to it in the far left is fantastic.

If you want to draw the eye to the face more - perhaps have it backlit by amber/yellow light from inside the armour's cowl - art of him later in the heresy usually shows a red backlighting, and amber/yellow would compliment the existing colours and reference his (current) loyalty.

Horus, for me has always been Bullish, like a good front row prop, only on a Primarch scale. I like a mix of both far left and right, the pelt and sash really do it for me. As for size, let me introduce "Big" Bill Cavubuti:http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q3SjoLaRUZA/UccQHOmk5UI/AAAAAAAABx0/ZVDe9W8UEbE/s1600/Bill+Cavubuti.jpg

Leftmost armour with its plentiful iconography, although with the rich, Imperial red cloth of the far right. I'm assuming the white is meant to be of uniform shade, otherwise the second has the best luminosity to my eyes.

The armour to the left of the middle is the most intimidating, but it's not regalised enough for me to fit Horus' character. Battle damaged, shredded up tabard would bring about a very brutal show for a few minutes while really showing his true character and bring some attention to the chest plate, but ceremony-wise the far left sticks the best. Middle right is just slightly over-adorned with the gold trim for my taste.

Damn good visualisation in the far right face, it seems like it was drawn from the bald head downwards, which fits the Horus in my mind; a slightly off-putting feline gleam to the features, eyes wide for that hint of androgyny but still undeniably masculine, whereas the far left sample looks far too human.

That's how I picture Horus, whereas if you go with the wider, pitbull-y profiles as proposed above you don't leave yourself much room to work with the real heavy-sets like Ferrus or Vulkan, and I don't see much primal charisma flowing when he's half a foot shorter than most of the others, as a wider build would suggest.

Pinpointed why I like the face; it's the chin. For me, I don't expect a face with such a longer chin and jawline to have such a round forehead and skull, and that is what offsets it from being acceptably ratioed for me to view as human, like the left one.

That is damn fine work by my tastes!

2nd from left body, with middle portrait.

Though I always imagined him with more of a bulldog look. Short and stocky neck, big and bald head.

But he is also described as very attractive, beautiful. I´d reserve such a hard, stocky look for Abaddon.

For the armor, I'm liking the tabard of the far right, fur of the far left, and armor of the third from the left.

Is it just me, or is Horus lacking obvious means of holding a sword/pistol?

You are totally right, sir! I´ll address that issue once I start to refine the design, but first I have to choose which one to refine.

@Kais Klip: thanks for the extensive feedback, it´s really appreciated!

@Steel Paladin: of course, I´ll keep posting the new material here as the project advances.

@amaze07: thanks! I will.

Fantastic designs and looking forward to the updated versions. Horus I do not think is bullish but is charismatic - Originally I pictured him to be like one of the ancient Greek sculptures or a Roman emperor. Handsome but radiating power and majesty which marines and humans will follow blindly.

The bullish one would have to be Erebus who I think at least helps if not cuases Horus' downfall. We all know what Horus looks like when betraying Sanguinius and the Emperor but what about just before - tragic possibly and even vulnereable...

The artwork done for the Horus Heresy gives him more of a bullish look. I honestly think that's awesome. It's not a look you normally associate with charismatic people, but actually fits rather well for a militant brand of charisma. He is a consummate warrior, first and foremost.

Hey sol your rite but that why I said dissappointing movies lol but transformers is great I still have a box full of em and I'm 18 because I know 20-50 years they will cost a lot of money............. But the best cartoon of all time was Dino riders I'm a 90's kid don't judge me

And funkey monkey your right when you think about it especially when lex puts on his armor some things surprise you I geuss a friend and I were talking if they ever did live action or something like Beowulf horus heresy movie and he said vin diesel should play Russ now I know what your thinking but remember in chronicles

Of riddick at the start when he had that beard I always think of Russ

I always kinda pictured Horus looking something like Luke Goss. Well, when he's not in monster make up, like this:

Am so looking forward to the devlopment of these concepts. I hope that everyone can make it to the next live session to make their suggestions as it is developed

In the meantime I am going to post some information about the next set of free 3D tutorials from youtube

Texturing for Beginners and Space Marine Neophytes

Update on the free space marine shoulder pad and texturing tutorials below!
Diego, David and I are creating these concepts and models to send to Games Workshop along with a bit of animation.

Hopefully Games Workshop will like them and allow us to do more. We will be uploading lots more artwork, 3D models and designs very shortly and we would love to hear what fans say about the work.
