Grand Master Aldric
Hello, there has been some talk about Goto making up stuff that is not canon. Well I have made this topic to talk about his books. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283689-cs-gotos-books/ Share on other sites

ferrus
In one book, Eldar Prophecy I think, Goto states that Ahra is the same person as Karandras. Totally wrong and to be honest Goto isn't that good a writer either, in general I mean not just making stuff at random Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283689-cs-gotos-books/#findComment-3528955 Share on other sites

Xenith
Every forum I've been on has seen Goto threads closed or banned. Let's see how this goes. There's a reason Goto doesn't write for BL anymore. Since you've just read Eldar Prophecy, did you notice that one of the main characters got 3 arms cut off? One near the middle, then his other two arms near the end of the book? Also: Terminators with multilasers, which convert to assault cannons, doing backflips etc. I think I read a snippet of an interview with Goto where he said that he takes the names and the imagery of a universe, then just does his own thing. EDIT: Technically, all of C.S. Goto's work is cannon. It all happened, somewhere in the universe. It just goes against a lot of other things that have been written about stuff. Like biology and physics. That said, I believe Chris Wraight in Battle of the Fang has some Wolf Guard terminators nimbly climbing up an elevator shaft. My only golly gee? moment in an otherwise excellent book. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283689-cs-gotos-books/#findComment-3528969 Share on other sites

Posibly, it's well over 5 years since I've read the book, I think it's the main characters rival that it happens to. Yea, I had my copy to hand: p184 - Scilti gets an arm cut off by a dire avenger exarch p355 Scilti gets an arm cut off p356 Scilti gets his third and final arm cut off. You'd think the Eldar would be a bit more aware of such rampant mutations on a craftworld. Trevak Dal
I've been reading the Dawn of War omnibus, and so far it's Okay so far. I kinda like the idea of Khorne Sorcerers...pyromancy and biomancy. DinoDoc
To be fair, he did write a surprisingly good short story for the Mantis Warriors: The Trial of the Mantis Warriors in Legends of the Space Marines. Kol Saresk
Actually, as long as they used blood magick, they'd be in the clear. Case in point, the Blood Witches of the Blood Pact. Biggest example is in the novel, Blood Pact. And I don't recall anything ever saying Sindri was Khornate, just that he was allied to a Khorne lord. The DoW series wasn't too bad. Granted, they didn't follow the games and the games just kind of glanced over them, but hey, its not like GW never did that. I thought Scilti had gotten a replacement arm at one point? helterskelter
One of the goto moments I enjoyed was the little guardsman lad being transformed into a marine in the DoW series, even the leaping off a tank and stabbing an ork. Shades of convict in predators on rereads/watch. Imenjoy suspension of disbelief :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283689-cs-gotos-books/#findComment-3529257 Share on other sites

Son of Carnelian
The Trial of the Mantis Warriors still ranks as one of my favorite pieces of power-armored fiction of all time. It perfectly encapsulates what duty means to these posthumans and how they view themselves in failure, something we almost never see in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I take more umbridge with CS Goto's books being bad than violating aspects of canon. Telling a good story comes first. Unfortunately, he never really told a good story in his novels so the canon conflicts become more noticeable. Dam13n
For me it was his seemingly complete lack of knowledge when it came to the established canon, combined with a turgid and uninspired writing style that made reading his novels feel like wading through treacle. Being able to create an acceptable short story, but fail utterly when writing anything of substance, does not make for a good writer. It makes his sins as a writer worse in my opinion as it shows he had the ability to write for the setting well but never put it to use.
