Shaky hands, How do you deal with it?

Ok, I'll admit it. My hands shake all the time and on some days can get really bad. I was wondering how others deal with it, especially seeing some of the beautiful minis on here.

I'll start, depending on how bad they are, music tends to help, as will coffee. If I'm doing detail work like painting symbols, I'll actually prop my hands and mini against the table. There are times that I will just not paint because of my hands.

Coffee helps?  Usually makes me shake more lol!

Have you tried some basic relaxation exercises, think of Tai Chi's warm up exercises.. breathing steadily and calming the nerves.  Failing that, resting your hands against something / each other is what I find works best.

My hands are getting worse, so I can sympathise with your concerns :)

I have the same problem but mine comes from alcohol. Usually resting on something is the way to go; either the wrist you are painting with or extend the next finger down from the brush out and place it just below where you want to paint to act as a guide for the brush. Always happens when I'm painting detail onto miniatures.

I never thought of using the wrists supporting each other. Coffee's always affected me oddly, the first cup in the morning helps me get going, but after that it will actually calm me own. But then, I've always been a strange one.

My apologies, mods. I didn't think to do a search for other threads.

Spectre - Brother, trust me, they get annoying real quick, brother.

Once you've drink 24cans of mother in one day (approx 4hrs) all caffeine has no effect it actually is used to balance my system as I have severe caffeine withdrawals now.

Usually a nice black strong Russian or Irish coffee(shot of whiskey of course) calms me down

I make sure to get some hot wrist-on-wrist action going when I paint. Pretty much eliminates shaky hand syndrome.

this!

elbows on a table at a good height to stop you leaning too much/getting back ache, wrists together. it will help handling the model as well to mount it on something. this will give a better grip of the model and reduce shake. personally I use an old hex paint pot bluetacked to the base

Lean both elbows on the desk, and use your left hand to steady your right hand (brush hand).  If you don't have to hold the mini, you can cros your hands at wrists.  If you have to hold the mini, then hold it between left thumb and index, lean your right wrist into your left palm.  I hope I can make that clear enough.  I find that pressing both elbows against my chest helps with steadying as well, especially when working very small details.  I'd advise against coffee or other stimulants as they usually tend to amplify motor movement problems like shakiness etc..

For me the only two things I found effective were practicing painting (and I loathe painting) and steadying your hands by resting them upon something solid - the wrists trick would also be effective, I would think, but I've never tried it.

The true way to test for ADD/HD. If a strong cup of coffee calms you down, you have Attention Deficit Dis ... oh look; a squirrel.

Great I knew the doctor was right, looks like it's back onto medication boys
