A Question on Basing... basically

I've just started to base my 1st tactical squad using the GW Middenland tufts. I really like these as they seem easier and less messy to use than loose flock.

My question is, should I base all 10 models the same, or do most of you vary them. Each base has a rock and some spongy green shrubs, and to make a few different I decided to place a tuft on about 70% of my squad. Just getting consensus if all models should have the same materials or mix 'em up a bit?

Thanks!

Having the same elements on all the bases helps to unify a lot of models visually (even though like a lot of modelling situations, it may not be the most realistic option).

However, I would mix things up a bit so that all the bases do look individual. So some might have more rocks, or more tufts or more gravel for example. Also, be sure to vary the position of things like rocks and tufts, as well as their sizes. This is what will give you a more interesting and less contrived look.

If you have four or five basing elements, it's okay to leave one off on some bases too, as they will still look unified overall. So a few bases might not have rocks, or might not have a tuft for example. The best way to determine what's in/out is to ensure that the overall base colour/effect still remains consistent. So you might leave off the tuft or the sponge, but never both - ensuring that all bases have some vegetation on them for example.

You'll soon get the hang of it, and will know quickly if you think they're missing something! ;)
