Recent Grey Knights BL Novels

Last weekend I was able to finally finish of the new novel, Pandorax by CZ Dunn. The story was made interesting by its revelations, especially with regards to the new info on the Grey Knights. A few years ago before the 5E codex release, many of us older fans were praying for more expansive coverage of Grey Knight lore. Aside from a couple of cameo appearances here-and-there (The Killing Ground by McNeill), only Ben Counter's Grey Knights trilogy had really saw them fully adapted to paper from within the Black Library's output. Fast-forward to the present and it seems much has changed in that time. Since then we've seen the following releases, many of which were only released within the last year:

  • Crucible by John French
  • The Emperor's Gift by Aaron Dembski-Bowden
  • The Ghost Halls by L.J. Goulding
  • Kaldor Draigo - Knight of Titan by L.J. Goulding
  • Pandorax by C.Z. Dunn
  • The Prisoner by Graham McNeill
  • Sacrifice by Ben Counter
  • Witness by Joe Parrino

(Feel free to add to this list any BL stories I've missed.)

In addition, many of you GK fans may already be aware that LJ Goulding is also planning to release a story covering the divisive subject of 'The Battle of Kornovin'. That's right, its that tale in which the newly-promoted Supreme Grand Master Draigo gives Daemon Primarch Mortarion *ahem* impromptu cardiovascular surgery. It's tentatively entitled Mortarion's Heart and it's cover artwork was released last week. Here it is for those yet of you who are yet to see it:

Seeming as there aren't many topics about some of these releases, I was wondering if any of you had read many of the shorter novels and what you thought about them. Also, what are your initials thoughts on any of the upcoming releases such as Mortarion's Heart?

Well i recently read the (very) short story "Sacrifice" and it shows what goes into the creation of a grey knight's war gear.... left alot to be desired as a story but the light it sheds on that one subject is quite inspiring, especially since it is also Counter's work

No problem Inquisitor =D=. Aside from Pandorax, all the other novels lists in the OP are short stories. All are available on the BL website iirc.

For anyone struggling to find it, 'The Prisoner' is included as part of the 'Tales from the Dark Millennium' compilation.

Haven't heard of that one and will have to look into it. Cheers Grand Master Caloth!

Oh man, I can hear the screams of nerd rage from here. Gonna enjoy watching the internet froth at the mouth when 'Mortarion's Heart' drops. Extra juicy will be the Chaos Marine forums.

On a more serious note, perhaps given it's not Ward writing it, the author will have some freedom to write it from a different perspective. At the very least it will be good to flesh out what is a pretty important turning point in Draigo's life.

It's all a dream.  Either that or it's all part of T's plans...

Personally, I hope the author tries to encompase the tragic element of Draigo's fate.  Play that up (trapped away form his bretheren, unable to make any lasting change), and downplay the Super Sayan Draigo Level 5 (Every Daemon in the warp bar 4 are scared to death of him, he single handidly breaks, burns and destorys the private sanctuaries of the Chaos Gods and thier most prized playthings...).

Tragic Hero, not Uber Marine.

Either that, or out him as an Avatar of the 5th Chaos God, the Emperor...

Surely he's closer to a Daemon Prince of the Emperor (or Tzeentch). tongue.png

Seriously, I'd like this story to explain Draigo's hefty physical chcracteristics. Statlines that include WS7/S5/T5 aren't normal for any chapter master and it isn't really explained within the codex or in Pandorax, which played him closer to a normal marine (albeit a psychic, daemonhunter specialist of a marine) and kinda avoided the whole issue. Is Draigo a giant for a marine (ala Arjac Rockfist), endowed with tons of cybernetics (Ortan Cassius), victim of a freak event (Mephiston) or is it all part of some ritual all Supreme Grand Masters undergo? No one knows yet...

Just hopefully not Ben Counter writing it

LJ Goulding is writing the script for it - it's an audiodrama iirc. Of all his work, I've only read his short story The Ghost Halls, which was interesting (especially in how the Grey Knights handle their encounter with the Eldar) but it was too short to draw conclusions about the writer's overall ability. Maybe some of the other members here have read works by Goulding and will have a better idea of what to expect.

I have it for my kindle. Pm me your email, if you like

That's alright. I'll try to buy a copy if I can. If I have trouble getting a hold of one I'll be sure to contact you with some questions regarding it. smile.png

I would agree Emperor's Gift is a definite must read for the Grey Knight players. It warms you to the closer brotherhood that Grey Knights share due to the constant psychic bond they share with each other. It also does a very good job of explaining the Grey Knights role in Armagddon 1.0. I enjoyed it greatly the first and second time of reading.
