How do the Vlkra Fenryka Anti-air these days?

Glimpse the Void

Many moons it has been since last I sat before your wise counsel.  I have been off wandering and hunting the frozen plains since before most recent edition of 40k, and upon my return to The Fang I've heard horrible stories of murderous turkeys that strike swiftly from the void, and black skies full of abominable necron crescent rolls...

In short, I'm getting back into my space wolves and am pretty concerned about flyers.  What have your experiences been like in friendly play?  Has it been an issue?  What do you do about it?  I know there is an aegis defense line that everyone has access to, but it seems that would make your army pretty static (not to mention boring).  What are the good options in our book for taking out flyers?  Long fang spam?  twin auto cannon dreads?  Is it worth allying with another chapter for some flyers?  Is this a good time to convert up some squats that count as something else as allies that are equipped to make flyers a non issue?

I thank you in advance for your advice.

I am with wulfbane on that. I dont play so often against flyers but if this hapened my longfangs always brought those nasty birds down. (there was only one game a flyer survived, but that doesn't metter that badly... My Longfangs stand it too)

Flyers in general don't seem to be that bad but Hell Turkeys can be real pain. As the others have said, ignore them unless I have nothing else to shoot at. On the bright side most can be brought down with massed bolter fire said Hell turkey & one or 2 others being the notable exceptions. ADL's seem popular & I use a Bastion with a Quad gun.

Long Fangs with an attached Div Rune Priest or my Raptors make an appearance with that new AA tank and a Storm Talon.

I don't see many fliers aside from one guy who runs Elysians with all the flyers forever but aside from that I maybe see a Storm Raven or twin Storm Talons once in a while.  There is a general distaste for the Hellturkey with the people I normally play with as its seen as a MAJOR crutch with the FAQ that put into the full idiotic mode so I've not seen any since the FAQ on it.

Thanks to the power of Allies, we have as many ways of dealing with flyers as we have allies. A Vanilla Marine detachment with a Stormraven/Stormtalon combo can be pretty nasty, so too can their Stalker/Hunter AA tanks. Guard Vendetta squadrons or Hydra AA tanks are an are an option too, and failing allies altogether the ever popular Aegis Defence line is always available.

Personally, I have a (40K approved!) Storm Eagle, and I haven't had any quarrels about it's inclusion in my lists... If someone with flyers in their list doesn't want to let me use it, thereby imbalancing the game, well then that's not someone I want to play.

Guard Vendetta squadrons have my vote, 2 of these in a squadron have been show to have great odds (above 1) of killing any 1 flyer in the game.

Something like this:

Company Command Squad - auto cannon

Platton Command Squad - auto cannon

2 Squads - auto cannons - blob for survivability

2 Vendetta in a squadron

Aegis defence line - no extras

=530 pts

Forms a great back field base of operations.

Edit:

Or Hyperios Air Defence Batteries - if you have a number of whirlwinds you can just demount the rockets and use these.

since i made my own hyperios defence platforms i can sit back and focus on what is happening on the table and not in the air. any points above 1500, i run a quad gun and 3 hyperios defence platforms. yesterday against a mate of mine they just did magic. He has a storm talon and a storm raven... SR arrived and died.... following turn ST arrived snap shots only then glanced it to death. I cannot stress how good hyperios platforms are. Just leave them on high ground so they have vision and u can sit back and relax. Now a quick tip!!  if you play against guys who use flying MC's. Separate the platforms, so they are individual squads and not one. That way after each hit they must take a grounding test once they land long fangs pop in for tea and biscuits.

3 platforms cost 105 points.

Fliers have just made me play more aggressively. I tend to play with objectives out front even in enemies deployment zone, and try to keep close to my enemies. If my opponent is a nerf hearding meta gamer and plays hellturkeys, I have been known to bring along an ADL with a quad or a lone wolf manning a Icarus. My best anti-air moment in the last year was against marines. Drop-podded in behind a ADL and my wolf priest shot down a stormraven with my opponents quad-gun! The look on his face was priceless...

Personally, I use my (not-)Tau for that. Some Misslesides at the back can really put the hurt on someone.

But here's an alternative take. Against non-Balechickens, you can just play normally, since most fliers will kill 3-4 at best in a shooting phase and need to navigate around the field to get shots of. If you are one of those guys who likes to run 2-3x 15 bloodclaws then most fliers shouldn't be an issue.

As for Balechickens... either the AA above, allies, or aggressive positioning. If you play a drop pod list, you can be very close to your opponen and possibly deny the drake a vector strike and a juice flame attack. If you engage them in melee, then you will be quite save for the time being. But that's darn hard to pull of, I'd rather shoot them to kingdom come with space vikings operating large battle bots of the dark ages :D

Give it a few days and GW Digital will have rules for the formation of a Stormraven and 2 Stormtalons that are in the Stormwing bundle, allowing you to pick up all the Air Superiority and Close Air Support that the VIth will ever need.
