Dreadnoughts: Are they worth it?

You could shok one with a droppod thatgives you heavy fire from a side your oponent would may not expect. ...

But it still depends on your tactic if they are worth it. if you re bad luck your cybot ll be destoyed to soon.

But i found them nice, cause in far most of games they blow foes tanks away verry fast.

In my opinion the question if something is worth to use it could be far mostly be answerd with: depending on your tactic

Aye - in my last 40k forays I used dreadnoughts a lot, mainly my contemptor in a drop pod (this guy intimidates people) and a normal dread in a pod (both packing asscans and DCCWs w/ heavy flamers) they've been successful against hordes, eldar and even marines - I've yet to face Tau but I expect them to do well for 1-2 turns then be blasted to oblivion.

For me it's either my two Contemptors supporting the front lines or rifleman dreads (that would be a normal dreadnought with 2 TLAC) sitting back with my Longfangs/Broadsides. I also want to tryout the hellfire config.

Sure, they die easier with all that hullpoint business and can be krak/plasma-grenaded to death, so In my opinion normal dreads are best used as a fire support platform. Ven Dreads are overprinced, so I wouldn't bother with them.

The only dreads I would be sending forward are either Ironclads (which we don't have as of yet) and Contemptors because of AV13 and that delicious 5++ against dakka. Then it's usually either Kheres Assault Canon with DCCW or chainfist with DCCW and two heavy flamers, both in a drop pod, or lucius pod if you want your opponent to hurl a metal land raider at you. Alternatively you can footslog them with a cyclone launcher in addition to other toys.

I'd say they are still viable, their role has just changed quite a bit. Dreadnought are much more of a supporting unit and force multiplyer than they are a one unit wrecking machine tarpit. I can definitely see the merits a backfield rifleman, however, I think they would work great in a Drop list, coming in with a unit or two of Grey Hunters to give some added heavy weapon punch. Equipped with either plasma/HF or AC/ML. Or if you wanted to go tank hunting MM for getting something to pop quick. I would think twice about using them alone, but using them in a blanket of other targets could really work well.

I sometimes take a dreadnought with either MM or plasma cannnon, then a DCCW w/h.flamer, in a drop pod. Lands, hopefully blows something up/kills meq infantry, then hopefully survives a turn before charging into combat. However most of the time it dies too quickly for my liking.

As mentioned above, the rifleman dreads can be effective against light armour/non PA troops, but i dont have one :D

I never leave home without my pair of double TL-autocannon dreadnoughts.  They've more or less supplanted my Long Fangs as my light antiarmor workhorses since Heldrakes erase units of Long Fangs in a single turn.  I've turned back to filling my Heavy Support slots with lascannon Predators for dealing with heavy armor instead.

for iron hands yes for space wolves no. put a dreadnought on the board and your giving your opponent first blood drop pod it in and it will get krak grenade to death. dreads need to be av13 have or inv save or and iwnd to be effective. the only dreads that really do what they should are iron clads, blood angel dreads and contemptors and contemptors are walkers but not really dreads.
Hence why I have 3 Contemptors to my 1 normal dread... However I've had 1 Contemptor pod in (not alone mind) and wreak havoc for 4 whole turns, that said he was supported by 20 podding GHs and a further 10 GHs w/ WP & TDAWG on OBEL duty - man that was fun... So yes dreads are worth it, if like everything else it's not relied on to be a lone man, otherwise it will simply be destroyed - contemptor or not.

Completely disagree with all of this. Even against AV12 Krak grenades are not that bad. And who in this edition, knowing the limitations of vehicles with hull points, assults with a dreadnought alone? Like I said in my post, not so great by themselves, in a crowd they can be very effective.

It's all about target saturation. If the dread is the only target derping around midfield/enemy deployment zone, he will go down faster than a sororita in front of Big E. If, however, you have several of them doing their thing with additional support, the enemy will need to spread thin or accept the fact, that a lot of angriness is coming his way.
