MOTF anyone using them?

I recenty played a game with a MOTF with a conversion beamer (first scratch built anything and darn proud of the model). I was not impressed but that is probably because I used him wrong. I left him on foot and stuck him in the corner of the table to try and utilize max range. Bad dice on turn one and then the my oppnent was within range of the next profile which isn't really impressive.

So I was thinking last night about dropping the CB and adding a primarchs wrath to him and then putting him on a bike? What do you guys think?

Oh and the reason I like the idea of a MOTF is the fact that I have an open Heavy Slot and love filling it with a second Iron Clad in a DP! Good times!

I just about got tabled by one with a conversion beamer a couple weeks ago.  He threew it in a dev squad that had laz cannons behind a defense line and mauled me.  Lucky shots for him and bad charge rolls for me ended the game by turn three.  His lack of invul save can hurt bad though, so a bike for t5, or the shield eternal would probably help him live longer against a ranged army.

If you want a Beamer, put him on a bike. As it hits harder at long range, you can use the speed+relentless combo a bike gives you to stay a long way from the enemy while sniping them to bits. Also, if anybody gets close enough to charge you, they better be packing some heat, because a motf is no slouch at beating stuff up, especially as the bike boosts his toughness.

I run mine quite a lot, keeping him cheap with the servo harness and maybe a power weapon. He is obviously great at supporting your armour and patching them up and if you stick him in a Land Raider he'll keep it ticking over nicely. He's also fairly handy in assault, for example supporting Tacs in a somewhat similar fashion to how I like to run my Dreads though of course you should ideally pick his targets.

Sometimes I give him a couple of technical servitors to help him with repairs :) My biker MotF with beamer is still in the early stages of construction, that's surely the only way to run the beamer with any results? I'll get round to it eventually, but the harness MotF is a cheap support HQ that can do a solid job especially if you love tanks so I'm happy with his performance. Great models too!

Master of the Forge on a bike and in a bike squad is just plain evil - an extra flamer, a twin-lkink plasma pistol, twin-link bolter (on the bike), whatever gun you give him, if you do and two big hitty things.

Gives a hell of a lot of punch and makes it a really formidable unit - especially if playing hit-and-run White Scars.

Step one: Bolster a piece of terrain (preferably a ruin) in one of the corners, and put him + a combat squad with a missile launcher there.

Step two: Spend whole game shooting at distant stuff, preferably expensive infantry (long fangs, obliterators, devastators, tau suits etc.) and/or vehicles (artillery, transports camping on objectives, etc.).

i  like to put one in a land raider with assault centurions. It's just  about as close as you can get to guaranteeing line breaker and denying your opponent getting slay the warlord. Give him a combi grav, so he can concuss things live sworm lords or. Demon princess before charging it with all those strength. 9 ap2 attacks, from the centurions

I run mine with servo-harness and a comb-melta (hold-over from long ago) and either put him in a drop pod with Sternguard for that extra punch or put him in base-to-base contact with a walking dread to be there for quick repairs. I love pods and dreads, so he makes my army work a little better. He is great in the shooting phase, but always dies quickly in assault.<br />I am considering the Armour Indomitus (relentless, a ++ save) with Comversion beamer. Bike is probably better, though.

Bike is definitely better, given he already has a 2+ save so would be paying a large premium for relentless and a small invulnerable. The additional mobility would be very useful for ranging targets and you could argue that T5 provides just as much additional durability as the Indomitus invulnerable in most situations, if not more one off super-invulnerable aside.

I've been shoving him in the backfield with conversion beamer, auspex and a stormshield.  Sometimes sat on his own or sometimes sat near my vindicator.  He hasn't died yet but he does a decent amount of damage.  That said I am considering swapping the beamer out for the primarchs wrath... I guess it depends what happens with the new nid codex :p

Ok so I am not crazy. I like the idea of Primarchs Wrath with a Servo harness on a bike. That gives him either 6-7bolter shots (5 rending and 1-2 TL shots) or 5 rending bolter and a plasma or 5 rending and a flamer template. To me that sounds insane. I would run IF with an ADL with 2 devs squads behind it and a sniper squad (great for taking out special weapons!) I think with him in that mix I think that provides a great fire base to support the rest of my army as they do thier thing.

He can't fire his own weapon and a bike weapon together. He can fire one of the servo mounted weapons and his own weapon though.

I've been running one since the codex came out as my warlord. Give him the shield eternal, and let him camp on my skyshield with a hunter/stalker or my thunderfires. He keeps whatever I've got up there working all game, and if someone assaults the stuff on it, he's added/contributed to several nasty shocks when guys realize how crazy he can be. I realize that I'm not maximizing some of his abilities, but he's still never a disappointment, he rounds out whatever I find myself needing almost every game, be it a few extra shots, or adding to overwatch, or keeping my tanks and guns firing, it's been great.

Oh I guess I understood that wrong. Oh well the rest of my point still applies!!!! turned.gif

I have seen them used a few ways effectively:

1 - Conversion beamer on the bike is a classic, because good players try to get close to the beamer, and the bike allows you to stick and move to prevent that.

2 - Keeping them cheap and using them as a force multiplier for bike squads or sternguard squads; basically, it takes a unit that is already solid and makes them that much harder to deal with in combat. Also, the 2+ armor and appropriate weaponry means I've seen them paste quite a few more expensive characters in combat (nothing like that chaos lord taking a servo arm to the face).

I've found once they start getting truly expensive with gear, it was almost always a better option just to go with the chapter master - it's the value for the price that has really made them good when I've seen them used well before.

I am in between both of these posts.

I run my MoTF because he is cheap and manipulates the Force Org Chart.

I usually put him in a five man assault squad that has two flamers in a drop pod.  He tanks some wounds for the squad and I have 3 flame templates plus his TL plasma pistol.
