Some old school fun- update 12/11

So I got this little gem from a friend of mine recently:

He decided around the time that he finished putting this together that he didn't really care anymore, and recently found it and gave it to me knowing I make space marines (I went kinda fanboy when he showed it to me)

Anyway today I decided I would start the process of restoring and retrofitting it. I am going to make it into one of the old school razorbacks, (the one with the manned turret) as when I started playing that was my favorite space marine vehicles. The turret will be made from scratch.

This is it disassembled as far as I could get it. The friend in question did the cardinal sin of model building by using globs of glue so parts I couldn't get off and some parts were damaged in the process. (Nothing some green stuff won't be able to fix when I put it back together)

The paint looks to be only primer. (though it is horribly applied) tonight it will get to take a very long bath in simple green, and that should cut through the primer just fine...

Anyway so this is my project for before boot camp (three weeks away)

Any thoughts on chapter to do it in? I want to do one of the old school RT chapters.

And some fun to leave you with: some mk 6 dudes:

Thanks for looking :P

Yeah I really want to give these guys some of that rogue trader flair. (Things written on the armor, kill markings, actual rank insig and such like that)

Just can't decide on the chapter to do...

I say go for the gold, and with gusto!  One of the chapters that fought in the Badab War with the retro camo scheme!

@forte: As much as I like to think I can pain well, I have my doubts that I could do the rainbow stripe on the helmet to a level that I would like... I could probably do it, but I would drive myself mad with the tiny things... :P

No I think I have narrowed it down to three:

Silver Skulls

Crimson Fist

White Scars

If I do the scars it's not going to be the whole Mongolians ...IN SPACE...

Well, it's great fun to see a bolts 'n nuts restoration like a real world vehicle! :) Good luck mate, this is going to be fun!

As for the color, the original seemed dark green to me, so how about DAs? ;) (or black if you wanna go old school).

@Cpt Semper: it was green. It actually looks like he just sprayed it with the old dark angles green spray bottle that they used to sell.

That is a possibility. Keep it to the original owners idea. Though I would want to rt schemes so DA would be black. Any other RT chapters dark drab green like that?

Rarely see Rainbow Warriors.

*Ahem* msn-wink.gif

Whilst it would be good to see it in Rainbow Warrior colours, the stripes are a pain in the Cam Shaft to do blink.png

However, Old school Dark Angels (i.e. Black, rather than green) would be good to see, or Raptors (dull green). Outside of The Yak, I don't think I've seen any other examples smile.png

What about the police marines

Military Police Marines were a position in the armies like the old Lieutenant/Lieutenant-Commanders and are effectively redundant/taken out sad.png

Doesn't mean that one couldn't include them anyway smile.png

Found this gem today while I was going through a box in the closet. My first codex (or more accurately my brothers) and the very book that got me into warhammer 40k!!! I know it's missing the cover (which is a shame because iirc the inside cover had a pic of the ultramarines chapter and the front cover had the coolest cover art of ANY codex GW has released) but the fact that I found the book is not why I posted it.

This is:

While skimming through memory lane this evening (memory lane= old codexes) I happened across these two images and promptly made up my mind. I'm totally doing the silver skulls!

My reasons:

A) there totally bad---

B ) as forte said, you really don't see many of them now a days

C) I haven't painted a gunmetal model in a long while and this will be a good chalange.

Yeah, I remember when the space marine tactical squad that just got replaced came out :/

Anyhoo I was up working last night. All the good bits (ie the tank and an old plastic dread that is getting re purposed) are chilling in a tall glass of simple green and the stripping process will begin in ernest tomorrow.

Did make an imperial commander though outa the 25 anaversy marine. I was originally using him for something else and it just didn't quite feel right so he got re purposed back to his original intent. :D

I didn't like the plasma pistol that they gave him, so I switched it out with a old style forge world one.

Thanks for viewing!

Edit: addition: I will soon be changing the skulls on both his shoulder plates to represent the chapter symbol (ie: more stylized and sharp)

Yeah... That one is starting to annoy me on how to fix it. I may just have to bite the bullet and shave it down to resculpt... :(

I have another one somewhere (that is missing the terrible mold line) but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. If I can find it then it's going to replace the one that's on now, but otherwise...

No. Just be gentle. Use a pin in a pin vice (drill) and follow the grooves. Should be able to scrape the worst off.

I didn't mean do that to the whole thing... That would be a pain in the --- that I don't want to try. I was just talking about cutting down the offending bit and sculpting green stuff to make it looke right. (So there is no gap in the coils, cause at the moment the coil doesn't quite line up between the sides, so I have to use green stuff over that bit anyway)

Finished the commander and changed the gun on the special weapons dude. I like meltas better anyway. ;)

Started work on the gunner for the razorback. Fido the dreadnought came out of the simple green bath (he has been there for a while) and though he is changing colors to the silver skulls, I'm gonna keep the name for him (it's the small things that make me chuckle that I have to keep)

So that's the whole gang for now... I'm still waiting on the rhino chassis to finish its bath in the simple green as well as a few small odds and ends.

Tomorrow I go get the paints and start throwing it on ;)
