Painting pre heresy word bearers

'Bah Humbug' to the red and black scheme. The granite plate looked soooooooooo much cooler.

 

Nothing says you can't use a darker grey paint scheme, Recon.

depends on when your placing your force in the heresy, in going shadow crusade. 

recon, the grey has grey shoulder pads with silver or metal trim.

Actually nothing says that all of the Word Bearers had made the change or even by a certain date.

prime: Black

Base Coat: Army Painter Dragon Red

Wash: GW Druchii Violet

Highlight: Vallejo Scarlet

Metal Trim: Vallejo Oily Steel, Wash with GW Nuln oil

shoulder Pads: Vallejo Black

Lens: Vallejo Andrea Blue wash with GW Guilliman Blue.

Guns: Vallejo Black and Gun metal.

If you have a question on haw the guys at FW painted a particular Legion all you need to do is send them an email and they will typically reply within 24-48 hrs depending on holidays and weekends.  You will usually be very surprised by the brand of paint and method of application they use though.  They rarely use the GW colors and almost always paint with an airbrush.  There is a tutorial over at The First Expedition Forums where they have collected most of the FW recipes for the HH paint schemes.  Here's a link:  Forge World painting guides.
