Painting pre heresy word bearers

Anyone have any idea how to paint the forge world version of the word bearers...the grey seems very light...and the red seems nice but are the shoulder pads black or grey?

Nothing says you can't use a darker grey paint scheme, Recon.

Is it supposed to be red and black or are the pads grey?.....heathens I was thinking of using heavy charcoal from reaper master class

Actually nothing says that all of the Word Bearers had made the change or even by a certain date.

I would do slate grey with red trim. Then again, I'm sick of seeing the red and black myself. I've seen no grey Word Bearers at all.

i see your point, i typically paint dull/dark colors.  the red and black make a nice change.

Can I ask how you painted your WB? Is that red with black pads and silver trim? Which red did you use?

prime: Black

Base Coat: Army Painter Dragon Red

Wash: GW Druchii Violet

Highlight: Vallejo Scarlet

Metal Trim: Vallejo Oily Steel, Wash with GW Nuln oil

shoulder Pads: Vallejo Black

Lens: Vallejo Andrea Blue wash with GW Guilliman Blue.

Guns: Vallejo Black and Gun metal.

They were granite grey at Isstvan V except for the Gal Vorbak, who were red.

If you have a question on haw the guys at FW painted a particular Legion all you need to do is send them an email and they will typically reply within 24-48 hrs depending on holidays and weekends.  You will usually be very surprised by the brand of paint and method of application they use though.  They rarely use the GW colors and almost always paint with an airbrush.  There is a tutorial over at The First Expedition Forums where they have collected most of the FW recipes for the HH paint schemes.  Here's a link:  Forge World painting guides.
