recon0321
We're bolters and the different MK's of armor developed together? Like did certain bolt guns usually go with a particular set of armor? Moonstalker
Yes, but that doesn't mean they're locked in together. A squad might be issued new bolters but not new armor, or vice versa. Or they might have battlefield pickups to replace lost equipment, or maybe an individual marine may just have a preference in the gear he uses.  Mk II Crusade armor and Phobos Pattern Bolters were the original issue gear. Mk III Iron armor was largely just a modification of Mk II, adding additional armor to the front of the suit. These two suits saw service together during the early-mid years of the Crusade. As Mk IV Maximus armor started coming around in the time leading up to the Heresy, you would start to see Umbra and Tigrus pattern bolters as well. When the Heresy kicked off, you'd start seeing the Mk V armor (which was just suits cobbled together from whatever parts of II/III/IV could be scavenged) alongside Umbra Ferrox bolters. Kol Saresk
If you go with Forgeworld's sets, they do sell specific bolters with specific armor marks, but as far as I know, it's just a "This bolter looks good with this armor" method, not an actual "this gun was made for this armor" type deal. Mainly because there is no type deal. By the time we reach the ends of the Great Crusade, we start seeing many many variants of bolters and armor marks. Like the Sarum pattern from the Sarum forgeworld and the Praetor pattern(as made famous by the Ultramarines) of the Veridian forge. Don the Oiler
If you go for an early Crusade-era army, entire tactical squads armed with mkII and Volkite chargers would do well too.
